500 watts to high???

i was just wondering if anyone could tell me if a 500w psu for my system is to much?

AMD sempron 2.6 ghz
Asus mobo
ATI radion 256mb
2 opticals
1 floppy
Maxtor 80gb
2, 120mm fans
1 USB divice

basicly i want to know if a 500w PSU will blow this system up??? as im currently useing a 300w PSU

more wattage in a psu is never gonna blow your comp up. but if it isn't a quality PSU then I would worry alittle ;)

500 watts for your system is indeed overkill though, but then again you can never have enough watts.
 
Well in my opion you can never have too much but if you really want to save some money I think even a decent 400W would do you fine but becarful from recent magizines where they test PSUs they found a £70 600W PSU blew at 400W kinda worring but I got mine and it has no make but it runs brilliantly. Somtimes people just choose it for the brand name and forget all about reviews.
I have a 550W and my spec is in sig
But back to the point I think a 400W PSU will be fine but if you plan to upgrade and do Sli I would most likely get a 500W

If your computer is only using 200W of your 300W power supply, it's only going to continue using 200W even if your power supply is capable of 500W.

If anything, it may run cooler and reflect lower costs in your power bill because a 500W power supply would be under "less stress."
 
I am running an Enermax 365watt with the rig in my sig now. Not by choice since one of my power lead wires got pinched and melted on my 600watt Enermax. Surprisingly, I just snipped it off and moved it to a secondary computer. But yeah.. you should be fine.. but I probably would skip on the Magna brand.
 
That's the exact same thing as an Aspire unit. Not so good. At least "Magna" put the actual 500W on it instead of fudging with a 10% tolerance and putting a bogus 580W on the label. :D The long term reliability may be questionable.
 
I have a flashy UV PSU and it runs all nice and ood however i had to install it upside down everyone I know with it had to do this very wierd indead but it worked as an advantage as the LEDs now face downwards :D
 
as mentioned Magna is not what is generally considered a high quality supply

in addition any supply in a plex case will be emitting alot more EMF\EMI
(electromagnetic field\interference)

EMF obeys the inverse square law however and by doubling the distance from say an unshielded data wire or other component your quartering the field strength

however no one has bothered to run tests to determine what point source field strength you get these days in an average power supply, so just try to avoid close proximity

youd think someone would catch a clue and build a plex & wire faraday cage
it would look quite cool all lit up
 
I managed to read the 12V Amperage and it is 17A which is not a lot but fine for your system.
 
Guess i will have to do my homework a little better next time. I have much to learn and this forum seams like a good place to start =]
