I have configured the speakers to be in 5.1 and they test fine in Windows 7; I get sound out of all 6 places.
When playing a song or video in both Windows Media Player and VideoLan the speakers will only play in 2.1. I get the front two and the sub, no center or rear two.

Where else might I have to tell Windows to use my 5.1 setup? I have gone to control panel>sound and that is configured properly.

Are you using surround sound audio sources?

Anyhow, if the test works, try using MPC-HC.

I know WMP works, but MPC-HC is a lazy nuke for solving about 92% of all video/codec/audio problems on the software side.

MPC is dead, MPC-HC is the continuation.

Stereo sound will come out stereo, it can't just make up more channels. You need to find a way to make it mirror to the rear speakers.

My X-Fi has the option for that in its drivers. I can't vouch for any other type of sound device.

As it has already been said, if you are playing back a 2 channel source, of course its only going to play back on 2 channels as it was intended.

The only question we have as of yet is what is your source?

O, and ditch VLC, grab MPC-HC from here.

I'd be highly surprised if MPC-HC (out of the box, unmodified) fixed his "problem" where VLC or WMP12 could not.

It obviously won't, its just a better all around player for a multitude of other reasons.

I think I know my problem. The speakers are the Logitech X-540 5.1's and I just learned that they were supposed to come with a master control, which can be used to change the speakers from 2.1 to 5.1.

Is there a way to change this without the master control?
