Im playing with a xonar dg and regular headphones but I don't think it's really good enough to pick up sounds in mainly fps games. Are there any popular headphones that are sub 50 dollars that have true 5.1? Maybe even 7.1

No. The only good headphones in that price range are stereo. JVC harx700, Samson SR850 etc.
 
Physical 5.1 and 7.1 on headphones tends to be rather gimmicky. There is only so much space within a headphone cup and if you plan to fit 3+ drivers a side, the size per driver is severely limited.

As such, you will generally see a reduction is quality going to hardware multichannel in a headphone, and all the ones I have tried that even came close to the quality of a decent set of stereo headphones were $100+.

Instead, you may benefit from switching to a different pair of stereo headphones since not all headphones function well with Dolby Headphone.

What headphones do you currently use?
 
i HAVE TO AGREE, ONCE YOU GET TO 5.1 AND 7.1 IN HEADPHONES, IT GETS NTO A GRAY AREA OF HOW THEY WILL PRODUCT that kind of response from what speakers

Skullcandy's actually been making some decent full size headphones lately, none of them are open backed and/or good at presenting a wide sound stage though. Aviators are semi open, probably the closest, but there's better headphones for gaming well below their price range (and build quality on those stinks IMO).

The Samson & Senn recommended above will fare better, heck even the JVC RX700 will do better at that even tho they're semi closed and boomy... They've got a decent stage if you need the isolation from closed back headphones (or if sound leakage is an issue). If you need closed headphones the Creative Aurvana Live are also decent but more like $75.
 
I say go with the JVC HARX700s. You honestly can't go wrong with them for under $50.

The Samson SR850 are the better choice if all he cares about is positional audio in games... That being said, the JVC are more comfortable stock and more fun sounding, cheaper too IIRC.
 
How would I really know if these headphones are any better than my Skullcandy heshes? They are in the same price range and for a little more money I can get one of those turtlebeach gaming headphones.

turtlebeach, skullcandy, bose are all names of BAD sounding gear. Trust a dude who has actually heard hundreds of headphones over the years. I promise you that a pair of Sennheiser 439s will make you sell your hesh fast.

Senn's you might find locally, the Samson not so much... Skullcandy's low end stuff is just marketing and retail presence more than substance (hence the Bose comparison). Price isn't everything, specially when it comes to audio. Also, i believe Amazon lets you return headphones for nothing but the cost of return shipping.

Another thing, if you decide to go with the HARX700s or any of our other recommendations be sure to purchase this convenient Zalman clip-on mic along with it which would bring your total to about $48 if you decide to purchase it with the HARX700s.

At $48 shipped, I honestly don't believe you can do much better.

With Black friday coming up you might find some good deals on headphones.

I suggest looking for a pair of Creative Aurvana live's Just above your budget but highly recommended.

Or else get the big brother of the headphones recommended here, the JVC HARX900's. Open headphones so will have much better soundstage the the 700's. They can be got for around $60.

Hmm, going back thru some Head Fi posts a lot of people were saying the RX900 is bassier, some people commented it's better for gaming... Not sure if they actually mean online gaming. It does look like it might be slightly more vented, cup might be more bulbous? Guess that accounts for the bass and/or extra sound stage, same circumference tho.

I've only had the RX700, the 900 used to be nearly double the price tho and that puts them near the price of the Creative Aurvana Live.

Are you sure? I thought the RX700's were closed headphones. The RX900's are way more open the the 700's. Even looking at the pictures you can see the back of the 700's are sealed completely, but the RX900's have dotted vents all the way around.
 
I have had both. The 900 has a bigger cup with vents and has more bass and a larger, more 3D sound stage.
 
I bought the 439's on sale for 80. Just got home and going to test them now. You guys better be damn right.
 
Okay the sound quality is really good. Im gonna have to listen to it more but so far it's great.

The plastic seems cheap and Im afraid it might break.
 
good to hear. it's nice to see people steered towards quality stereo headphones.
 
Senn's plastic build doesn't seem very solid but it's generally pretty durable, save for some headband cracking episodes with other models. It's also part of what makes them very lightweight tho.
 
Yup. I ain't speaking out my butt after all. The 439s are a great deal for an all around headphone. My 558s are crazy good for the $110 I paid for them.
 
Nope. Get a good pair of stereo headphones like the OP did. 5.1 just doesn't do it as well yet.
 
These senheissers I bought are the real deal. The best headset I've ever bought. It's pricey but if you find a good deal on them you should definitely get them over most brands.
