4x Pcie splitter and cpu pcie config question?

Intel says my 3770 k can run 1 at 8x and 2 at 4x. If I used a 4x pcie splitter to 4 cards, would this work? Does the splitter act like one 4x config as far as the CPU is concerned. Can I still run one at 8x with the 4x splitter? Tia.

So 5 cards altogether.
 
Where do you plan to get the PCIe splitter? Do you already have one?

If not, the only ones I know of are PCIe 1 splitters, which splits a single lane of PCIe into 3 single lanes.

The onboard PCI-Express controller on the CPU has 16 PCI-Express lanes in total. Motherboard not withstanding, you can output these in virtually any configuration you want. Typically its x16/x0 or x8/x8. With motherboards that support 3-Way Crossfire it comes out at x8/x4/x4. If you are talking about PCIe bifurcation then you are probably SOL. Even if the motherboard chipset supports the feature, the motherboard BIOS may not. We have a huge thread about this here. It's important to note that SLI does not support link speeds on any graphics card lower than x8. Crossfire does, but SLI does not. I don't know what your goal is if you intend to use five graphics cards but I thought I'd mention it.

Honestly, if you want to run that many PCIe devices, Z87, Z97, etc. aren't the motherboards to use for that. You should be using X79 or X99 for that.
 
If this is for that 3d rendering rig you were talking about in your other thread Dan_D is right on the money, invest in a workstation class system using x79/x99 or its xeon equivalent, you can run 4 gpu's easily on the right board, all at x16.

That's my point. Additionally, these cards pull power through PCIe slots as well as supplemental external power in most cases. If you start splitting PCIe slots your going to have problems potentially drawing more power than the board can handle. I'll say it again for the cheap seats: Running five graphics cards on any P55, Z68, Z77, Z87, Z97, Z170, or Z270 motherboard is not a good idea for any reason. Mainstream motherboards simply do not have the electrical capacity, slot count, or PCI-Express lanes to run that many graphics cards without issues. You also have option ROM issues to contend with.

I don't want to be a dick but the OP here keeps asking questions about doing the same thing in different ways. If you need real workstation hardware to do a job then that's what you need to buy. Stop trying to jury rig some shit to work on mainstream consumer and gaming hardware. You are in for a world of pain if you keep going down this road.
 
OK...I was just curious. After doing more research, and yes this will be for 3d GPU CUDA rendering, what if I went with a server board with many pcie slots like a supermicro motherboard.

Also, I'm thinking of running dual xeons (older generation like 2670 v2)...would this setup be similiar in speed to my 3770k? My 3770K is fine for me right now, but I'm doing some heavy GPU rendering for animation, and my render time workflow needs to be reduced on my workstation. So would a server mb with dual (older and slower) xeons, but many fast gpus, like 980 ti and 1080 ti, be a good thing?
 
If you are leveraging CUDA rendering, then yes getting more GPUs in place will benefit you over CPUs.
