Hi there. I've been folding since ~'04 and I've recently taken an interest in increasing my contribution. With the increase of output that they've given GPU folders, is it still the best move to go 4P? I'm currently on a 670FTW and 3570K @ 4.5 FYI.
If 4P is still the way to go, what can one expect out of a stock 4P 6128 system? And how does this parts list look? Thanks a bunch!

4x AMD MC 6128 8 Core w/ 212+ Coolers
Super Micro Computer H8QGi-F http://www.ebay.com/itm/Super-Micro...934554074?pt=Motherboards&hash=item23246685da
8x Crucial Ballistix 4GB (2 x 2GB) http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148488
850W+ 80+ Eff. PSU. It seems this is the lowest recommended rating?
Case: Uncertain. Possibly Fulmo GT or Blackhawk Ultra?
Thanks again.

Well.... it is an interesting question right now.

The GPU QRB is in beta. If the beta number hold, GPU is quite compelling. However, this is not probable. We will see some change probably. Either on general release, of a few month down the line.... always seems to happen.

I would say if you are not going 48 core, GPU *might* be better..... but we just don't know.

Fold with what you have.... if you see a crazy deal for a GPU or two hop on it. (Sales and all for the hollidays). But until we get a general release..... it is all up in the air.

If the current points from the beta continue then a single GTX 580 could potentially be just as fast as that whole computer. Now would not be a good time to buy new hardware.

I will vouch that my 580 is currently folding for more points than my 32 core 4p... however my 4p has and will continue to fold at a damn near constant rate... the GPU is in beta. If I were you, I would decide what I want to use the gpu/4p for and get which ever one fits your use case better. That way you don't get upset with PG because they decided to change everything without any real decent communication about what was happening. Good luck and Fold Hard!

I do not find it unreasonable that volunteers investing literally thousands of dollars on these rigs should be able to expect some transparency from the project.

Some day an equally deserving DC project that understands this will come along.

Are you listening Dr. Pande?

No, I didn't think so...

Between the 8101 bigadv WU and the new GPU beta WUs, there are a lot of pissed off 4P owners. Over the last year or so the Pande Group has really had their head up the asses and no touch with reality. I will stop now before I slip into rant mode :D

Bottom line, we don't know how to answer your question yet!

Thanks for all the replies. I've done the client-type beta change on my CPU but between it and my cpu I'm still at maybe 70K ppd...
I guess I'll hold off until xmas, maybe by then they will know more and I can snag a few boxing day deals! :)

anyone that is surprised/shocked by this is an idiot, sorry but its not like its the first time that pande group has screwed over a portion of the more enthusiast community... like the PS3 users, or the original GPU users, etc, etc

To answer your 4p 6128 ppd question, I see about 166k ppd on 8101s and about 290k ppd on 8102s.

Bingo, this is why I only do BOINC since summer 2011. PG can kiss my butt.

Because there are no politics involved with boinc projects and everybody involved is perfect?

Nope, because there are lots of BOINC projects and I can move to different ones as I see fit and continue to contribute to humanity without dealing with PG. To each his own I guess, but my personal decision is to avoid PG.

Not defending PG's current silence, but GPU1 was both a success and a failure. It proved that a GPU client could work and also proved that DirectX was unsuitable as an interface into the GPU itself. As a beta test, it gave a fair amount of useful data as to what would and wouldn't work going forward. Sometimes a resounding fail is quite useful when there are other viable options available.

Hmmmm.... so are these new fangled GPU WUs going to come out of beta?
