With ASUS X78 Mobos supporting 4K resolution and I have seen ASUS has released a 4K display. Will we see more 4k displays from vendors like Dell, HP. I know that its too early to talk about 4K displays as 2560 X 1600 is out of budget for most of us out here. But what is your general openion? How good will be 4k displays for gaming?
 
Some 4K displays are 30fps max.
60Hz versions wont be much use for gaming, gfx cards arent powerful enough unless its not that intense a game (4x as many pixels as 1080p).
But then you wouldnt feel the need to run a low feature game at 4K.
Game textures are good enough for 1080p and 2560 res, not really up to 4K.

In enthusastic community like this there are some people who can afford GTX 780 Tri- SLI for gaming at that resolution. I can't even dream of gaming at 4K. For me 2560 X 1600 resolution is sufficient. Sometime ago I was reading the specs of ASUS P8Z87 Pro Mobo (the latest overclocking mobo for haswell). In its technical specs they showed comparision between 1080P and 4K and indeed the images in 4K were looking crystal sharp and clear, that can easily tempt someone to attract towards 4k displays

SLI doesnt scale linearly and SLI doesnt work well with all games, especially Triple/Quad SLI.
Quad SLI at 4K will be slower than a single card at 1080p.
Quad card users do it for a better experience, the cards arent fast enough for most hardcore gamers needs yet.

This must have been playing back video, the motherboards video output is run from the CPU which isnt much cop for gaming at 1080p let alone 4K.

Of course 4K looks better than 1080p, its 4x the res :p
There arent many 4K video sources so its a moot point for now.
You can upscale 1080p which may look a little sharper, but its not a patch on true 4K.
 
I think 4k will be easier to run than 5400x1920, in which I can power off one card. I guess I'm not a max settings kinda guy. I prefer high fps at sharp resolutions, with aa if I can afford it.

It will be the same as a 1080p display of the same physical size.

x1000 on the textures. Only a handful of games presently have textures for the 1440/1600p applications ... 4K is a long ways off.

I didn't get the concept of texture? Will this texture issue create issues while playing old games like Crysis warhead or BFBD2 @ 2560 X 1600 resolution?
 
The idea of using higher resolution is to get a more detailed crisper picture.
If you use the same size textures (ie their res isnt scaled up to match higher resolutions) they get stretched over more pixels and compared to the crispness of other objects, they will look less detailed, even blurred sometimes.

It depends on the game how high res the textures used are.
But if they arent that high, they can be just acceptable at 1080p but not so pretty at 1440p.
As pointed out, there are games that look good at 1440p.
 
4K at 60 Hz isn't actually that difficult to run. That's effectively 8 mega-pixel at 60 FPS and my sig rig is pushing 6 mega pixel at 120 FPS+ which is much more demanding.
 
What gfx settings do you use?
Which games do not reach 120fps?
Could you get away with 3 cards?
 
4k is sooooo 2014, I'm already over it. Gimme 8k, that's what I'm talking about.

hires is not going to be a problem soon. only if the new crisis doesn't hit breaking any plans one might have... The biggest problem will be the price of the Displays and price of the hardware needed to run it at a decent frame rate. The shitty 1080p will be in past and long forgotten, at last. RIP 720p and 1080p, and don't come back... b1tch.

What games, settings and framerates?
5x1080p panels in Portrait mode.
Presently, I've been playing a lot of BF3. On a single card I run a large mix of settings. On any game I usually kill off motion blur, bloom, and any shaders. I bump up draw distances / geometry, textures, and AA if possible.

BF3 I stay at 60 most of the time. If I'm using 2 cards, I can turn more things on, but I cant enable V-sync, because no matter how much FPS I get, it keeps my FPS at 30. I think it has to do with bandwidth on the xfire bridge not being able to keep up with the high res.

Xfire + Vsync works with 5760x1080 or 3240x1920, but anything above that I get stuck at 30.

Nope, it's easier because it's easier to determine what's what and it's also easier to see further away.

I agree, some people dont understand that 120+ FPS gaming takes ALOT of horsepower. Specially when you run eyefinity/surround setups @ 120 FPS+
