I will be using the following system

CPU- i7 860
Mobo- Asus P7p55d
GPU- Ati 5770

So which one should i go for 4GB or 6GB.Is 6GB worth it? I am reluctant to use 6GB but if it is really worth it then i would buy it. I plan to use the PC for Gaming and no photo editing.

I'm pretty sure the 6gb kit is for x58 only.

You won't get dual channels with the 6gb kit. It's up to you whether you expect to be using that much RAM. Also, why are you not spending just a bit more for a x58 and lga1366 i7?

what will you be doing with the machine? intended usage will determine whether or not you'll get use out of the extra 2 gigs of ram.

X58 mobo is beyond my budget, i dont need SLI no plans to buy $1000 processor and i7 920 uses more power and i dont want to overclock.

I want to play games like MW2,Crysis and upcoming games like SC:conviction etc, watch movies No photoshop for me.

Then you will be just fine with 4GB. Save the money or put it toward something that will make a difference like a video card or SSD.

He can do 6GB dual channel by going 2+1 in each bank (not with a 2/2/2 kit that's meant for X58), but it's not necessary. 4GB is plenty unless you're doing stressful stuff like running Firefox.

Unless you really need the 6GB, I would go with 4GB. That way, your RAM will run in dual channel mode and if you need more RAM, you can add 4GB later on. With your P55 platform, you should be considering 4GB or 8GB (the number of RAM modules should be a multiple of 2) in order to utilize dual channel.

Likely, incorrect.

Intel has had asynchronous dual-channel for many years - my 975X has it, so does my X38, etc.

Go 6GB, just because.

Woops, my bad. I thought that if you have an odd number of sticks, you wouldn't get dual channel support. In either case, there's always the option of going with 4Gb and then adding some more later on if needed when DDR3 ram prices are a bit cheaper

So far, P55 chipset based boards are not showing asynch dual channel as a supported configuration in the manuals I have seen. So, as noted here, buy either 2 or 4 modules, not 3 modules. I'd also suggest that if you do choose 8GB, I'd buy it now.

Are you implying that DDR3 price is going up again soon ?

No but, ICs constantly change. So, there's no guarantee an user can get the same ICs in the future. And, using memory made with the same ICs when adding memory greatly decreases the chances of compatibility or stability issues.

If you are going to use the PC for gaming, then 4 GB is more than enough. I use 2 GB and I can run all games at its full.

its 4 or 8 gig kits for p55... dont be a nub and use 3 dimms in a p55

It depends on what games you are playing. I'd like to see you try to play Crysis, Batman:AA, NFS:Shift, and Mass Effect 2 at their fullest with 2GB of RAM. ;)
