4GB is not enough

So, yeah, apparently 4GB is NOT ENOUGH. I thought those saying such were alarmists. I thought we'd be fine for a bit with 4GB. Then I got Just Cause 3. WTF man, to run this damn game I have to set texture quality to LOW and I have NEVER had to do that with any game before. Still looks pretty good though. Every other setting, I can max out just fine. No shortage of GPU HP here, it's just the RAM!

Wow, I am really surprised!

2560x1600

4 inches isn't enough, but 6 would just do it. Obviously if you have 8 that's even better, but 12 is definitely overkill.

Obviously talking about length of graphics cards you pervs. :D

And if you have two 12's, well, you're a one-man-party!

Seems like a troll to me

This is 4k, OP said he's at 1600p

OP has a card with zero frame buffer memory compression.

Fury X is AMD's first family with Delta Color Compression, and Maxwell features Nvidia's most aggressive version of it.

You got two 12' cards with 12GB vram each. Damn son you should be like a walking chick magnet or something.

Nah Tonga based 285 was the first with delta color compression.

The OP is also running about 1/2 the res and says he has to use low.

Low texture setting for 4 GB card at 2560x1600 makes no sense at all.

Hell I just fired up the game at 2715x1527 which is a few more pixels than that and the game used max of 3750 MB on max settings with very high textures. And my card probably allocates more vram than it actually "needs" since I have 6 GB.

set buckets to 11

In all seriousness, my COD BO3 uses more than 4GB on my 390X with the settings cranked up at 2560x1440.

Well, if I have the texture quality on anything other than low, my framerate just drops to like 15-20 after a while and isnt really playable, and you can see that the dynamic memory is growing in GPU-Z. (It gets really shitty once it hits about 1GB of dynamic ram used) I can turn everything else on the highest settings, but have low texture quality, and get 40-50 fps, which is much better. So maybe there is something different with my system. One thing, though, just sitting in windows I say 650 MB of VRAM being used, I disabled one of my 2560x1600 screens (I have two) and the ram usage in windows went down to like 450MB. So it's possible that having a very large desktop (2x2560x16000 + a 1080p screen) took like 600MB right off the top. I have the latest 16.2 Crimson drivers, on Win 10 x64. I thought it was kinda weird too but the game is 40GB, and consoles have 8GB of shared ram, so using more than 4GB on the higher settings makes some sense. I really thought that people whining about 4GB were really over exaggerating the issue.

I will note that you can play for 15-30 mins on the higher texture quality settings and get decent frame rates, but the longer you play it seems to use more and more VRAM, so I could see it running fine for a benchmark or something on higher settings for a little while.

Maybe something wrong with your card? Can you run the second monitor off integrated graphics?

Nope, 3930k system. I did buy the card used, but it seems to be OK, I mean it doesnt crash or anything and I have played the game for several hours at a time. I think the thing is just that the game uses more VRAM over time, so people who just benchmark it for a few minutes or hop in to see how much VRAM it uses arent getting the full picture. It takes a little while for the VRAM to spill over. I have some GPUZ logs I can upload so you guys can see, I will upload them this evening when I have some time.

If you can play fine for 15 minutes, that sounds more like a game engine bug than anything else.

Sure you aren't having throttling issues due to heat?
No, card is water cooled with an HG10/H60 -- temps never get above mid 50's. VRM temps get a bit higher but still acceptable levels.

Well, if I put texture quality to Low, I can play as long as I want. The VRAM takes a little bit to sort of max out though, it doesnt max out right when you load the game. If the VRAM usage just kept growing forever, then I would say it's a VRAM memory leak in the game, but it doesnt grow forever it just takes a bit to reach the max, I guess, and on low textures that max is inside of what I can do, and higher than that, it's not.

I run 16gb ram because that is what I do but I would definitely upgrade to 8gb.

it only compresses bandwith not texture in memory

and 4GB is fine...

Compression increases B/W and capacity, not just B/W.

Read the rest of this thread, those numbers are not an accurate representation of ACTUALLY PLAYING the game.

Are we talking about system RAM or video RAM, here?

Because 4GB definitely isn't enough system RAM for anything but a netbook. And with those 4k resolutions, it might not be enough for video RAM either... although I'm on 1080p, and avoiding the more intense games until I can get a GPU upgrade.

that doesnt happen in some games,it is required to manage textures with the driver and the game code, and that benchmark is from some seconds in game..

Wow, I thought I mentioned it, doh, but it's a R9 290 (as seen in my sig)

What are the rest of your settings? I would start there and maybe look for help vs going into full on Rant of "4Gb" is not enough type rant..

if you turn all other settings down/off (including control center settings) and turn textures to high do you see the same thing?

also if Just Cause 3 has a community forum I would definitely head there as well as there is a much higher chance of finding someone with the same issue and a possible fix.

Performance degradation over time seems strange, it almost sounds like a VRAM leak, which I honestly have never heard of but would't rule out. Is the game fully updated?

I have it on steam, so yeah it's fully updated. I will probably check out the JC3 forums though. In any case, I have settled on settings that are very playable, basically everything max, textures low, and water medium I think. The OP was a bit ranty but I was drunk at the time so heh.

Here are some logs.

As you can see ..VRAM IS FUCKING FULL
It peaked at 3536 MB + 632 MB Dynamic, and this was IMMEDIATELY after loading into the level. (EDIT: Actually you can see the VRAM rise, occasionally in large steps, from a fresh boot -- to fully in the game.)

So basically all of those previous screenshots of VRAM useage are totally invalidated. The game has been updated multiple times and I have it on steam so this is the latest.

I see 552MB in use in that pic....

And your dedicated memory based on the text file you linked, never went over 3.6GB....

Look at the graph, he alt tabbed (or closed the game IDK) to take a GPU-Z screenshot so VRAM usage obviously dropped but you can see it was completely filled.

Again, based on the txt file he hosted, it never hit over 3.6....

At peak he went 150+MB over 4gb.

It looks like the game is having an issue with flushing out data, that dynamic memory looks normal though.

Well, counting dynamic memory. But that's system RAM.

It's not like his GPU memory was flooded....

Poor mem management? Yeah, probably. But 4GB of vRAM not being enough is ludicrous.

Dynamic memory is system RAM being used because you don't have enough VRAM.
