Ok so i currently have a 3870 looking for a new card so what are the sizes of the 4850/4870 and the 4850 x2 as well as the 4870x2 just need to plan my upgrade so i dont run out of case room heh and this is for a 28" lcd hehe

This might help......

The 4870 is 9 inches and the X2 is 10.5. I shot it at an angle, but you get the idea.
Case is a Coolermaster Stacker 830, plenty of room.

yeah i have an antec solo love this damn case got it with a 550watt psu for 117 shipped from newegg i just want to make sure if i get a card the damn thing will fit

I believe the 4850 and 4870 are the same length as the 3870, so you shouldn't have any size problems.

I have a 4850 in a SOLO and the only problem is that the PCI-E power plug goes into the the HDD cage so you will lose the space for a Hard Drive.

why can they not keep these god damn things to 9.5 inches i mean for Christs sake whats next a case spec designed to accept 12+ inch cards this is insanity just means if i get a 4850 x2 i'll probably have to mod the power inputs so they are on the side of the card for easy access.

ATI MOVE THE POWER INPUTS FROM THE BACK OF THE CARD TO THE SIDE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD

the 4850 and 4870 are not the same length. the 4870 is like 1/2" longer.

I agree about the PCI-E power plug. Even though the 4850 was short enough to fit in my case without any problems, I had to move a harddrive just to make room for the PCI-E connector.

Also it *is* possible to design these cards for a shorter PCB. Gigabyte redesigned the PCB of their 8800GT TurboForce, making it significantly shorter than a regular 8800GT (19.5cm instead of 23cm). I guess Nvidia and ATI are too cheap to spend any money making their reference cards more tidy and compact..

Oftentimes shortening the PCB requires layers to be added, which raises the cost by quite a bit. It's not so cut-and-dry as to be able to say "ATI and nVidia should just do this because it's better".

But it *is* better.. This 4850 blocked two of my SATA ports - with my Gigabyte 8800GT with the shortened PCB, this didn't happen. The cards are getting too long and no longer conform to standards. Or rather, the lack of standards with regards to videocard length means it's hit or miss whether the card will fit without blocking harddrives or components and connectors on the mobo.

Everyone used to think the Voodoo5 6000 was too long but it wouldn't surprise me if current high-end cards are just as long - plus they are twice as thick as the old Voodoo card. If the cards keep growing at this rate we'll soon have to cut out a hole in the front of the case to make room for the 60cm videocard.
