first off I am not whining becasue I have an 8600 so pull your head out of your ass. I merely linked him to review showing that at his res that even a single 4870x2 will get the SAME performance. overkill is a waste of money if there are no benefits of it. if you actually look at the reviews out there you would see that crossfiring two 4870x2 cards shows no benefit 95% of the time even at 2560 and he has just 1920. in fact I could only find 2 games that benefited at all and again that was at 2560 res.

that future proofing crap that you are talking about is something that noobs illogically bring up all the time. by the time a game comes out that will tax two 4870x2 crossfired cards at 1920 there will be newer cards out. :rolleyes:
 
still believe new drivers in the next few months will help alot, ATI is slow at driver releases, but typically they make improvements, obviously there room to improve in crossfire for some games, im hoping when d3 and sc2 hits being its geared for ati crossfire will help, but who knows

while nvidia has a weekly release that does next to nothing most times

There's a lot of truth to this and then there's not. While 2560x1600 is the ideal resolution for something like a 4870x2 CF setup, at the same time, even at 1920x1200 with a 3x SLI GTX 280 you can crank up pretty much any game to maximum, we're talking 16xAA and 16xAF. With two 4870x2's, that 24x edge AA should be available in most games. Plus, now he can get that 30" monitor when he's ready!

Where I really agree with you is the future proofing non-sense. Sure, 4870x2 CF should still perform well next year in most games, much as an 8800 GTX 2x SLI does 18 months after release in todays games, but really 8800 GTX 2x SLI is weak compared to even one 4870x2. And since nVidia is in the hot seat right now, we're going to see some big advances in performance over the next year. Nothing out today is probably going look very good next year.

thanks for being mature and actually understanding and agreeing with me on all this future proofing nonsense. as for the first point there doesnt seem to be any improvement at 1920 except for Grid and HL2 Ep2 for a 4870x2 crossfire as opposed to a single 4870x2. a single 4870x2 kicks so much ass at 1920 that adding another one doesnt seem to help at that res.
 
Even though I dont think that second X2 will give you any added performance, grats for an awesome looking machine. Those cards are so sexy looking with the big RADEON on the side. I hope Ati will address 4 gpu crossfire soon. Im sure they can get it to work better than it is now due to some demos Ive seen with crossfired X2s with Pure Cinema 2, but its gonna take some time so for those that are a bit close with thier money, I would avoide X2 crossfire till Ati have mangaed to improve 4 gpu crossfire.

Having said all that, grats on your purchace just the same. Awsome looking setup. Sending you my credit card number so you can build me one exactly like yours LOL :)

used to work in a PC shop years ago, i still have customers who do just that LOL, order me what you think i need from ncix.com hers my CC# , call me when its ready

quite happy with it, but i do hope they optimize 4gpu xfire more, you can certainly see it works in benchmarks like vantage and 3dm06 but i dont wana watch that all day :)

then again they dont even have a real driver release for these cards yet, they shipped with 8.8 betas
 
looks like an awesome card but i dunno if i can risk losing a slot on my x48. of course i would want crossfire cuz i game heavy but i do other things too......
 
So what did you end up doing with your 4870's that you just bought that were replaced by the X2's? Anyways they are some fine looking cards the blackness just looks so good.

What are your temps like under load with the cards is Quad Fire?

temps arent bad really

under load in vantage:

cpu is under 50 on all cores (41-49) (8x475 1.3v)
gpus range from 88-68, the first gpu to get fresh air doesn't break 70 on each card, the 2nd gpu getting dirty air sits in the high 80's, the fan auto adjusting works MUCH better on these than the 4870 you can hear them ramp up when needed ( i hate the noise change but in all fairness there quite quiet unless your gaming, and who the hell games with the pc speakers muted :p

id compare the fans running vantage under full load to that of a 4870 @ 40%-45% or my old gtx280 at 75-80% which isnt bad, especially when you feed the heat coming off the back of the pair of them

the side fan i added back in after i rotated my 120 extreme beck to blow out the top of the case dropped all gpu temps by 2-3 degrees, also keeps the fan a "step" lower in vantage tests so less noise
 
mine just came from ncix. shipped yesterday, got here at 9am

installing drivers right now. was shocked at how heavy this card is. weighs a lot more than my 8800 gtx
 
yeah when i picked up my box with two 4870x2 and rampage formula x48 i realized how much copper was in the box LOL
 
got my sapphire today as well, but I won't be able to install and mess around w/ it until Monday =(....why do out of town guests always come in to town @ the most inconvenient time!!

oh well my new DFI CF JR mb won't be in until next tuesday
 
I read somewhere the DFI boards needed to have a bios update installed to let these cards work, something to keep in mind if you have any issues you might need to update the bios first.

I had an issue too, i couldn't get video... i had the dvi cable on the typical top video card and nothing, after an hour of dicking around i found it was outputting video on the bottom card LOL

yeah on the x45 chipset, but for the "JR" we only get the P45's which had no issues :D
 
x48 yeah was that x48 DFI board, not the p45 my bad

no worries, I almost had shat a brick when I read that, but fortunately my board has the p45 no the x45 :D

I'm still going to wait on getting a 2nd card...b/c I don't know how I would fit a 1KW in my SFF case haha
 
keep in mind the p45 is only 8x/8x pcie on the p45 in crossfire (16x for a single card though)

so if you run a single card or even two single GPU cards i wouldn't worry about it

mine ran just fine with two 4870 on 8x/8x, but i would think the 4870x2 cards might get bogged down on an 8x lane, so i grabbed an x48 board to get 16x.16x pcie in crossfire

hmm that is true...I was hoping the DFI site was typo, b/c there is mixed info on whether the the 2 slots will be 2 x 8x vs 2 x 16x...

maybe I'll just add a single 4870 and call it a day haha

Tonight I'm going to put in my new X2 with a single 4870 and see what happens.
I'll post some data with 4870 Crossfire'd, the X2, and the three-way.

I only noticed 1 web site that benched 3 way, and it did look like it was beneficial in some games; I'll be interested to see what happens.:D

I can honestly say I wouldn't want that setup if you gave it to me. Unless I could sell off one of the cards :p

But seriously, my 4850 CF already heats up the room quite a bit, to the point where I've started using S3 sleep a LOT more often than I used to. I can't even imagine what TWO 4870x2's would do. Hope you've got good ventillation you rich son of a bitch ;)

Overall very nice setup though, I dig all the black and red.

but yeah its in my office in the basement which is cooler to begin with and since heat rises, the wife can deal with it :)

games run great, the heat coming out the back during gaming is almost retarded , you cant touch the dvi connector after a couple hours of tf2 lmao and this is one of the better ventilated cases

Well, that's good in a sense that the heat sinks / coolers are doing their job. Kinda scary though. This is why I like visiontek's lifetime warranty and why I bought from BB...usually go with newegg or tigerdirect usually...so I'm still baffled that best buy has had the lowest price on this card.

CanadaOwnsJoo, anyway you could mount your hard drives in the bottom bay? Their heat is getting blown right across the NB.
 
true, i backed the voltage off some, ill see if its stable it was 1.4v , default is 1.25

i had it up there for 8x475, running 8x450 now so ill see if it helps, hard drives arent throwing off much heat, nothing compared to the video cards
