I think it's really just about optimization. That game was really optimized for NVIDIA cards. Some games run better on ATI cards and others run better on NVIDIA cards. That's the way its' almost always been.
 
How much longer are the 4870x2's compared to the 8800gtx ? cuz in the op's post they look a good bit longer and probably wont fit in my case unless i rip the hdd cage out :(

What case do you have? The 4870 X2 really isn't much if any longer than the 8800GTX.
 
I have 1cm if that spare between the end of my 88 and the hdd cage.
 
compared to my brother's 8800 ultra SC, it's actually a little bit shorter Evil. (waves, long time!)

the 280 and the 4870x2's are literally the same in length
 
cool, cheers yang ;) I was just going by the Op's pics and they looked much longer than the 88, but i guess its just the way the pic was taken.
 
lemme go see what my 88 is again, but i think 10 n half would be ok cuz I seem to remember 11 inches something IIRC for the 88 when i measured it before. :)

yeah, they are definitely massive, a lot heavier than my previous 280...

hope all is well Evil, the 4870x2 is a beast...btw it burnt the beejeebus out of my finger last night when I got too close to it :D

keep in mind the power connectors go on the bottom of the card, not the back so that wont be adding any length like the older 8800 cards
 
yup, yang was right, it looks like the 4870 is slightly shorter in length as i measured 270ish mm, i cudnt get the ruler to sit straight but 270mm'ish would be just shy of 11 inches but over 10 and a half, so if the 88 fits the 4870x2 will also :D

It depends on how you measure it. If you go from the edge of the bracket to the very end of the PCB the 8800GTX is 11 inches long. I measure it from where the bracket starts to the edge of the PCB. I do not include the bracket tab. If your case will handle an 8800GTX it should handle an 8800 Ultra, 9800GX2, 9800GTX, Geforce GTX 280, or ATI Radeon 4870 X2.

Fortunatley I happened to have a pair of GTX 280's, and a 4870 X2 on my desk all at the same time. So measuring them was easy. I remembered the length of the 8800GTX from having measured them before.

I don't think they make a case big enough for 270cm ;) I dread paying shipping on a 106 inch card, not to mention the power bill. :D

Yea, I didnt include the bracket, I just measured from the end of the vid card up until the begining of the bracket, so the bracket wasnt included in my measurements, but I couldnt get a totally accurate measurement due to the ruler being too long to fit into my case so I just had to bend the ruler to get as close to the card as possible and then take what measurement it gave me, so its accurate to within a few mm either side, but 270mm give or take a few mm is good for me and if I made an arse of the measuring I still have 10 or so mm to play with before the hdd cage gets in the way, so I think as you say I should have no problems with the 4870x2 .

can't wait to get my 2nd card in!...I'm gonna post a pic in your thread canada, since we have very similar hardware to show a nice comparison between a full tower antec 1200 w/ all the goodies and my SFF haha
 
with the latest drivers, 8.10 with the fan control built in i can game for hours @ 40% on both cards and they stay around mid 60's (C) and low 50's on idle, while not much nosier, for some reason in games theyd be @ 50-60% on auto and hotter, im assuming it waits to scale the fans up to counter the heat, where staying at 40% never lets it really build up i guess.... seems odd

maybe the new drivers help with the heat too *shrug* but still running great
 
You ever think about watercooling? I know it's not cost effective though as air, but probably will see much better temps.
 
Looks like i'm going to have to RMA my RAM and my Mobo. Ram is spitting out errors all over memtest and such and keeps blue screening with x124 stop code :(.

Then mobo won't flash BIOS at all - gives me some boot block error - tried every way of flashing except that Asus Auto Update. That program scares me too much.

Back on topic though - when I upped to 8.10s I am running about the same temps as you now - seems to be a few higher than before using the manual fan speed. Also, this card runs almost a full 10*C hotter than my first card i had to RMA. Oh well.

Nothing better than a 4870x2 with a 30" right now tho, FO3 looks stunning :D
 
Nice setup you got there OP. I'm hoping to add another 4870x2 to my main rig in two or three months. Have to pay down a couple of bills and get a beefier PSU first.
