4870X2 Issues

recently swapped my 280GTX for a 4870X2 but I seem to be having aload of issues trying to get it to run well.

Mainly with playing GRID. I get a fair amount of slow down while playing, nothign too serious but you can defo notice it. Using FRAPS i see my FPS is max 60 and it seems to slow down when it dips below that. Firstly this seems rather low for my PC (I can bench 3dmark06 no worries at 24k).

I have tried so many combinations in the ATI catalyst but nothing seems to resolve the issue.
In game I have tried 8AA, 4AA, 2AA and No AA but that does not work and even strangley it does not effect the framerate (60ish).

I no its not a heat issue as I have set the fan at 70% which keeps thigns nice and cool(ish)

Other info on my set which I hope helps trying to get soem answers:

QX9650 @4.2 under H2o
4GB OCZ Reaper X @ 1441 MHZ
2X Velocirapors in RAID0
Eneermax 1000w PSU
ASUS Max Extreme X38 Mobo
XP32
ATI Driver 8.9

I am beginning to think I will just go back to my 280GTX as I never had any issues with any games. I just wanted to see what all the fuss was about with these X2's but I seem to be spending more time trying to get games running well than actually playing them

If you have Vsync on it will NOT go above 60FPS ever. That's what it does, also if you do not have triple buffering on it will drop to 30FPS if the FPS dips below 60.
I don't know if GRiD offers triple buffering or not but you can force it with RivaTuner.

You did use a driver cleaner prior to installing the X2?
Some have had to reformat/reinstall the OS when going from one manufacturer to another.
Others get lucky and see no problems.
Hope you get it figured out.

Thanks for the promp reply. The reason I have Vsync on is when its off i seem to get strange lines (which after googleing sees to be a common issue).

I use Vsync myself since I don't need to see tearing in games.

I'd try using DriverSweeper first to make sure all traces of the old drivers are removed if you haven't already. Unless this is a clean install on a fresh OS?

I tried the driversweeper method first and I had all kinds of problems with the computer BSODing saying it was missing driver files. I would reinstall the driver and all was well then a day or two later the BSOD would come back.
I decided to just wipe and reinstall from scratch and everything ran great minus the texture flicker issue after the computer came out of S3 sleep mode.

ATI drivers suck which is why I went with Nvidia. Best thing to do is to do a fresh install, especially if you previously had a nvidia card installed.

Yeah I have used driversweeper on intial install and everytime since i have re installed drivers. Also booted in safe mode and ran it as well to be sure.

It just seems that there is sooo much tweaking to be done on this card for any game to run well/smoothly. (is it really worth it just for a few extra fps and even less fps than my old 280GTX when I have to use Vsync with the 4870x2 to stop the flickering???).

My next question is the settign in the CCC. Should I be using application controled setting sot doing it manually?? Also what about Catalyst AI. Should that be on or off???

You need to do a fresh Windows install. Until you do that you will continue to have issues.

If you uninstall all nvidia drivers and apps from control center. If you boot into safe mode then run driver-sweeper. Then run CC Cleaner you should remove all traces of Nvidia no? Why would it be necessary to do a clean install? Do they not do the job correctly?

They should work, but Windows at times has a mind of it's own.

Ok..last chance saloon for this thing. Gunna do a freah install of windows and see what happens. If it is till the same then its back to my trusty 280GTX

I wonder how he's doing. It's been a day now.

I'm going to buy one of these cards this month, and since I'll play on a 24" LCD with a likely refresh rate of 60 Hz, this might happen to me too. (Haven't decided on the monitor model yet)
Unless it's just happening because he used a 280 GTX previously. My build is going to be a fresh one, so, in that case, I should be ok. Hopefully.

Well the news aint great I'm affriad guys

Tried both 32 bit and 64 bit Vista version and still not completely happy. I have only tested on a few games but imho there are too many issues with all of them to warrant stayign with this card.

Problems so far:

Very noticeable tearing in most games- This improves when Vsync enabled but then my fps are restricted to 60fps (even with triple buffering enalbed) which is considerbaly lower than what I was getting with my 280GTX with no tearing what so ever (of course not all games but teh ones i play mostly..GRID/BF2/COD4 etc

Every game needs considerable tweaking to run anywhere near what you would expect from a high end product.

I know alot depands on what games you play on how the X2 will perform but in my mind that is not what you should expect. Dont get me wrong this baby rocks in benchies but for real time game play the results are mixed at best. Reminds me of my old 7800GTX SLI set up I had years ago and i swore to myself then i would never go down the multi gpu road again due to mixed results. I know things have moved on alot since then and thigns have improved but for consistant high end gaming with limited or no issues then single gpu is the way forward....

So back to my EVGA 280 GTX SSC edition and anyone wanna buy a brand new Gainward 4870X2?

Gainward? I didn't know that was even a company.

Sucks. The only game I have ever had an issue with is The Witcher. I had to turn off Catalyst A.I. but then it ran with only one GPU. It kinda lagged with max everything. But every other game I have played the X2 has treated me great.

i learned that same lesson with my 6800GT.. A single GPU solution is always much better unless its 3dfx :)

is it possible to disable 1 GPU for games that have problems? that used to be my SLI solution back then.. sure one was idle but the 4870 byitself is still a powerful card.. so in some games you may have to be limited to 1 but in other games that work well you'd be screaming with both..

its not a solution but if hte power of the 4870X2 is wanted in some games more than others still might be worth it..

Have you played GRID / BF2 / COD4 etc with that card, without having this 60 fps - 30 fps problem?

H-street, yes, I'm pretty sure there's an option to turn-off one of the GPUs. Some people mentioned "Catalyst AI" as being that functionality. I can't say for sure though, I never owned a multiGPU build. Yet... ;)

with the last two official drivers (including 8.10) from ati i have been getting 348% activity on one of the cores straight away from boot. temperatures will continue to climb and the fans will kick in if i don't load a game. Once a game is loaded (and exited) activity drops to 0%. Not a huge problem, but would prefer to not have to load the game up each time i reboot. Any ideas on the problem?

Edit: Strangely sometimes activity is not reported at 348% but 0% (don't ask me why i have no idea) HOWEVER the temperature is still much higher at first load (even after 20-30 minutes) then if i just quickly load a game and close it again - even though activity remains 0% and fan speed is default 27% the temperature drops 10 degrees, and stays dropped after having loaded and exited a game and throughout the computer being left alone...?
