Wow, the thing is a beast. Goodbye GTX280, hello R700!

EDIT: But it runs way too hot.

The fan is probably set to some stupid speed like 20% as on the 4850 and 4870 stock. Bumping it up to a higher speed will bring those temps down

Nope, it showed that the fan was running at around 2600RPM at load.
 
Ya, like someone said, surely the fan can go higher, Ill be cranking it..
 
The Radeon 4870 X2 is looking good. I'm glad to see AMD/ATI being competitive again.
 
They do run hot but from what ive been seeing its not an uncommon thing on the regular 4870's. Probably nothing to worry about, i remember my x1900xtx used to run at 96c load all the time, no amount of reapplying the thermal compound helped any and that was with the stock cooler.
 
The preview did not mention anything about microstuttering...
did it?


They said those weren't time demos but actual game play, so if micro did happen, I didn't see any mention of it..

Looks great! The multi-GPU technology was overplayed a bit, it doesn't look to be anything special, but the cards is incredibly fast. This puppy is going to throw out a lot if heat though, its going to make a GTX 280 look cool.

At any rate, I'd like to pick one of these up, but its got to run a lot cooler idle. If is hot at load no biggie.

I'd like to see GTX 280 2x & 3x SLI and 4870x2 CF thrown into the mix. For those of use that are already beyond any single card performance it would be nice to see.

Thats becasue Crysis is a piece of shit, the coding is all messed up in that game, the Devs even admit there are problems with it.

Yup, i remember that news blurb about warhead having a load of fixes that may or may not make it to the original game, mainly because its no small task to implement them.
 
4870x2 + 30" LCD = Happy Happy Mr. Wolf :D

I'll need to get used to lots of lunches/dinners with Ramen noodles for a few months after paying for all that pricey hardware.

Not this again. I know that its a TWIMTBP title, but GTX 280 SLI actually scales decently in this game, so its not all Crysis code issues going on here. AMD is having a tough time with there drivers for this game.

Crappy code or not this is a very fun game and stunning visually with the right hardware.
 
Crysis is just one game though...when you buy a card like this, you dont do so for only one game. Besides even though Nv hardware performs better in crysis, it still puts major strain on them cards. Im expecting that the 4870x2 will still be the better buy by a huge margin even with these crysis results.
 
But then again...even the lonely 4870 is the better buy for only 10 to 15% less performance compared to the 280
 
I want to see Crysis very high benchmarks at 1920x1200 using dx9 instead of dx10. It makes such a massive performance difference at no loss in visual quality.

No, you buy a card like this for EVERY game. Don't get me wrong, a single 4870x2 is going to spank a single GTX 280 most of the time. However, spanking it in games like CoD4 and HL2 where a single GTX 280 is already killing the game anyway isn't quite that big of a deal. The WIC performance was really the most interesting result in this review.
 
For those wanting to compare to the GTX 280, take note they're using an XFX XXX edition which is clocked significantly higher (670 core / 1458 shader / 2500 mem) than the standard cards (602 core / 1296 shader / 2214 mem). They're also using Cat 8.6 drivers.

Yeah, I don't know why they did that though I've not had a problem getting my standard XFX GTX 280's close to those speeds: 660/1420/1150

Huh?:confused: I understand the concept well as I've bought them before. I just think that it makes sense to compare standard products in a review with other standard products.
 
Every single game shown at highest possible resolutions, but Crysis at 1280x768, wtf is up with that ???
