4870 - Dissapointed

I got rid of both of mine because of the hitching. The fps can be above 45 but it still seems jerky or twitchy....like the fps is low but it's not....don't know how to explain it. Random fps drops in CLear SKy...............was not a good experience for me.

What card/s are you referring to?

Could it be that there were old drivers hanging around on the system, or perhaps the installation was botched? The 4870 should be a nice jump from an 8800GT.

That would be the number one issue IMO.

For my dad's system that I upgraded recently I went from the same MSI card you have that I overclocked to a 4870 that I also overclocked. The 4870 blows it out of the water with regards to performance in most things I have tried it with. I haven't found nor has my dad who is the primary user, any glitches either.

He games at 1920x1200 and so noticed a difference. I think that lower then 1920x1080 the differences are less acute though and the 8800 series still does pretty good at those lower resolutions.

We had some trouble with the last beta 8.10 RC, but the 8.9 official's were very good.

Hmmm I dunno bout that, I have a 8800gt and a 4870 1gig comin monday.

Ill let ya how it goes for me, but I can pretty much tell that the 4870 is going to blow my 8800gt away at 1920X1200.

Just my .02c

That's low level VGA 2D... Has absolutely no implications for real in-OS 2D/3D quality...

I dunno what that is.. sounds like a LCD scaling issue to me. Never seen a blocky Windows logo or progress bar.. I mean it's blocky cause it's displayed at 640x480 or something because the display drivers haven't been initialized at that point, but it's there's nothing "wrong" with the image other than the low resolution.

"Keep the 8800 and get a better monitor, 22" or 24". You'll thank me later."
- no thanks, the 2007WFP is one of the best purchases ive ever made!
Dunno about the 4870 issue, but monitors are one of those things where you THINK youre happy with what you have until you finally get one bigger. My current one (sig) taught me that :D

Too bad you gave up.
I found the 4870 to be a very good GPU, the ATI drivers take some getting used to, and the drivers are just now realizing the potential of the card itself.

Crysis is just plain bad for the ATI products, period. I have 4870 X2s in Crossfire and the game was terrible for me, no matter what I tried. So I think it was a bad example for your 4870.

Everything else I play is really smooth, and I think the colors are more dynamic compared to the nvidia cards I have now or had in the past.

I have no regrets switching to ATI.

hmm... my 4870's have never had a problem, even in crysis, its most likely not the card and an incorrect installation.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

You could have just received a bad card from Powercolor. It can happen. The game could be a more Nvidia favored title as well. And occasionally you come across a hardware "sweet spot" on your PC and when you upgrade nothing much happens.

I visit the Bethesda Softworks forums (Oblivion) and when the HD 4000 series came out a number of people were pretty upset their new HD 4870 cards showed no improvement and at times even worse performance than the Nvidia 8800 series cards that they replaced. They too were instructed to clean out any old Nvidia drivers, do clean boots, etc... Sometimes things just don't work out the way you hope or expect.

I'm just glad my GTX 260 (oc'd to 666Mhz) turned out to be much stronger than the 8800 GTX it replaced in every game I play.

people dont get the drivers installed properly, and without asking what to do to fix the performance since its a KNOWN fact that the 4870 is a brilliant card, they straight away say that X card is shit

what the heck

tons of people have had problems with them including myself and staff of [H].. my 4870x2 would work sometime and then start running like shit out of the blue or after a reboot.. even after a format and clean install of vista 64.. the drivers are just not good, simple as that.. the cards are great for those that are lucky enough to have no issues.

Every single Ati card I've had has had multiple problems, whether it be hardware or software (I've owned 5, none of which being a 4870 though). I hope they do good for competition but you would have to pay me to put another one in my pc.

Btw the crap constantly being said about drivers not being installed correctly is not true and never has been. The things left in the registry from old drivers do not cause problems and I'd love a REAL world example where someone has shown it has. A simple uninstall is all thats needed. Hell a reformat has never fixed any of my issues with Ati.

Maybe things have changed since Amd bought them, but their driver issues are not a thing of the past that's for sure.

I am no fanboy, hell i wish matrox and kyro would make a comeback.

For what it's worth, I'm very pleased with the performance of the GTX 260 216 I got to replace the old 8800GTS 320, at 1280X1024. A GTS 320 is quite a bit slower than an 8800gt though...

...an 8800 GT / 9600 GT / 9800 GT would've been plenty for 1280x1024. The GTX 260 is massive overkill, but hey, better to have more than you need than not enough.

I love my 280, and like installing drivers, not a catalyst.

As soon as you get Cattle involved, or any other farm animal for that matter, things are bound to go south with your GPU. ;):D

Nvidia drivers FTW!

I'm running across an interesting difference of opinions on something:

The 8800GT 512 is a damned good and solid card that I'm very happy with. That being said...are any of these new cards like the 260 or 280 or the 4870's on the ATI side appreciable upgrades over the 8800GT 512, all told?

They pretty much destroy it, yes. In many cases, a 50% performance boost over the 8800 GT 512MB.

8800gt -> HD4870 huge upgrade, but that's because I am not using a 20" monitor like the OP

I set the CCC to choose application settings for all the 3D stuff, but I left all of the strange ATi enhancements on (like psuedo-AA or whatever it's called).

Turn off the strange ATI enhancements and try again. I had mistakenly left them on while running 3DMark06 and saw it jerking around strangely. When I turned these effects off, it was smooth as should be. Probably a driver issue if you ask me, so just experiment to see if any of these effects cause issues.

Because of the noise

Noise? I suppose that depends on how you set your fans. I use the auto-fan control in Rivatuner, and have the minimum set to 30% (Duty_Cycle_min), which is quiet to me (I presume your case is closed), and the 60-70 temps set to their defaults (32 and 40). You can change this according to your taste of course, and lower the noise as a result. I live in Rio de Janeiro, a very warm city, so I choose to keep it cooler to compensate for the natural year-round heat.

Everything installed good to go....all I can say is DAAAAAMN my 8800gt aint got shit on this 4870 1gig.

Not 1 single problem for me. Cant wait to try out some Farcry 2.

Don't be afraid of tryin the 4870 it really is a badass card.

Read the original post? He bought the PCS version from powercolor, it has a non-reference cooler. Unfortunately many of the non-reference coolers are actually quite loud.

these the 4870 sucks compared to [insert nvidia previous gen chiset here] threads are really boring.............lol we get it some of you whiners are not able to use the card properly.............

Keep the 8800 and get a better monitor, 22" or 24". You'll thank me later.
QFT.
I was running a 19" and got a 24" a few weeks ago and game at 1920 x 1200 and the 8800gt is handling it very well.
The exception is Crysis (omg what a shocker :p), but all games are running smooth.

lol we get it some of you whiners are not able to use the card properly.............

Use the card properly? Ok, maybe some people are being very vocal about their problems, but seriously, what does "use the card properly" entail? There have been people who have done complete formats and still have complaints.

Its a friggin video card, you remove the old card and drivers, you plug in the new card, turn it on, install drivers and you should be right to go. Did you do some special voodoo other than that to make yours work? Surely the other people are doing the same thing.

I change my mind, the op is an idiot for upgrading to the 4870 and only using a 20" monitor. I'm sure someone out there would love to trade his 8800gt for your 4870....The 4870 performs way better than a 8800gt...heck the 4850 kills the 8800gt.

Spending 300$ on a video card only to play on a 17" monitor is an example of not using the card properly. The OP is a moron for buying a 4870 only to play on some 1440x resolution.

Nice name calling there. Some of us don't need 30 inches when the damn thing is right by our face. Actually the 4850 does not "kill" the 8800, it is faster in most tests but it by no means kills it.

Some of you get too attatched to your hardware, enough with the fanboy shit damn.

lol weren't you the idiot that got flamed the crap outta the GTX 260 thread in the hotdeals section?

O you're the same guy bashing eVGA because you didn't want to RMA your GTX 280 and made a thread crying about it, and the same guy who thinks folding is a waste.

I guess this is the USA and the internet, you have your own opinion.

I change my mind, the op is an idiot for upgrading to the 4870 and only using a 20" monitor.

i guess you don't play Crysis or Stalker CS. hell i installed Call of Juarez (released in 2007) last night and it brought my 4870 to its knees at 1680x1050.

I finally go my Saphire 4870 1GB working great... I sent it back and bought a EVGA GTX260 (core216). She's workin fricken awesome now...;) I can finally play Crysis Warhead at the highest settings on my 17" monitor.

ahhhh.............what.........ahhhhh..........wow............ahhhhh...........zzzzzzzzzzzz

from OPs sig

CPU: E8400 @ 3.73ghz & Sythe Katana 2 CPU Fan

humm could the overclocking have something to do with it? he be overclocking his stuff.........set it back to stock and then complain when it does not work

...this is the [H]. Very few people /not/ OCing C2D / C2Q chips.

I dont understand why people think he was stupid for upgrading on a 20" monitor, seriously, read benchmarks...

Crysis --- +43%
COD4 --- +70%
ETQW -- +100%
Assassins creed --- +37%
Oblivion --- +34%
Witcher --- +71%
Bioshock --- +98%

All of those increases are at 1680x1050. I admit some of those games are running at 60+ fps on the 8800GT anyway, but many aren't and even the ones that are, the performance boost allows you to enable more filters.

The OP is a moron for buying a 4870 only to play on some 1440x resolution.

You're a moron (for assuming a 20" wont make a difference, also for acting so high and mighty saying 1440x when the OP stated he runs at 1680x1050)...

I change my mind, the op is an idiot for upgrading to the 4870 and only using a 20" monitor.

...and you're an idiot.

Someone earlier in this thread said there was no point upgrading from a 8800GT at 1680x1050 and somehow everyone got on the bandwagon saying the same thing without actually looking at benchmarks and seeing many games bring the 8800GT to its knees even at 1680x1050, and if you want to enable filters like AA and AF, even more so.

The OP was obviously having problems of some sort. You should be able to clearly see the performance difference even on a 20" screen. Either he is blinded by fanboism and can't see the performance increase, he screwed something up with the installation, his OC is interferring somehow, his card was faulty, or there was a conflict thanks to bad drivers or design on the part of ATI. Why do people always assume the two former reasons rather than the two latter reasons?

Friggen hell I wish people on the interwebs would just give people the bloody benefit of the doubt and not post moronic and baseless ranting. Give the OP the benefit of the doubt, assume he either doesn't know any better OR that he actually has a problem.

EDIT: Performance increase values taken from benchmarks taken from anandtech:
