4850 Performance in HL2

You guys got me curious how my ancient 7900 GTO would do in the Lost Coast stress test.
I ran 1680x1050 high quality settings with Anisotropic 8x and got 31.68 FPS with 4xMSAA.
The exact same settings with AA disabled got 121.98 FPS.

a 7900 is still a very good card, it just doesn't have the infrastructure that newer cards do to handle higher resolutions with AA and AF

Well some one else said something about my bios but the latest bios caused mass BSOD's. I might try flashing it again when i reformat. Also i cant find any part in the bios that shows the bandwidth of my pci x16 slot so all i have to go off of is gpuz saying that it is at 16X

try cpu-z it also shows what your link status is, cause i was working on my crossfire setup today.

I took one card out and i got like 160FPS+ @ 1600x1200 res maxx AA , AF on my test monitor.

Will do when I get home. I'm up in NC for my cousin's wedding... I'm really just itching to be at home fiddling with my comp... I was just at a wedding 3 weeks ago and I get bored easily... darn A.D.D.

Um this may seem impulsive... but I just bought the Asus P5Q Pro at newegg for 129.99 with free shipping. Read a lot of good things about it and will work well for the future when I get another HD4850. So let me know what you guys think. I just couldn't resist with that newegg deal.

Meh. I like good motherboards. I have the M2N32-SLI-Deluxe Wifi edition, it was 230 when I got it. :D

I have a hunch that this motherboard you just bought will fix your problem. It could have been a wonky G33 board you have that's causing all this madness.

I myself have driven a 1984 Ferrari 308 Quattro valvole, and a 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo. I got a speeding ticket on the first run with the Porsche. The Ferrari was nice but was too small, since I'm 6'1. Other than that, my dad owns an camaro with a 396 rat motor in it. Got a nice kick to it !

I am running the LC stress test now, with a stock clocked Phenom at 2.5ghz. 1920x1200, high details, 6x AA, 16x AF.
88.19 fps

Ya I would expect my 4850 would signifigantly outperform the 3870... Hmm ya well I drive a 1997 Camaro Z28 with the 350 and a 6 speed. It moves, not that its stock or anything... :p. Plan on getting a new daily driver soon so I can turn it into a real monster.

I personally think I barely got 10fps over you with 8xAA and 16xAF on 1680x1050. So I think its the drivers not the card. Doubt its the motherboard too.

what kind of mobo.. other places seem to be getting much higer then that. Especially since I still can't even touch my brother's 8800gt, which is just wrong.

I got 220 fps on the source test with my 4850 @ 4 x AA 16xAF and 1920 x 1200...

I average 100's in TF2 with those settings, but lock it with Vsync most of the time ( monitor can only render 60fps anyways)

Lol In Counter Strike source i get 223fps @ 8x AA, 16x AF @ 1680x1050, but in lost coast it drops to a mere 93fps.

Yea, forgot about the lost-coast >_< I'll run a test later...

I could only get it to 6x AA for some reason but everything else at max and 16xAF and 1920 x 1200, I got 163fps in Lost Coast...

I likes 4850 :)

163 in Lost Coast sounds exactly right compared to this website. In fact it looks like you did better because that website did it at 1680x1050 and only 4xMSAA and 8xAF. Good job my friend... can't wait to be seeing those numbers on my system, and that truely shows that it can't be a cpu thing considering the cpu difference between yours and the benchmark.

So after reformatting and installing of 8.6+Hotfix drivers I just ran stress test again and this time I got 92fps @ 1680x1050, and just to throw out the idea of the cpu being the problem, i downclocked back to 1.8GHz from 2.4GHz and actually got better fps. So, I feel fairly confident its either my PCI Express 1.1 or my motherboard all together killing the bandwidth. Either way I'm not to worried considering I will have an Asus P5Q PRO on Wednesday. If this doesn't solve my problems then I don't know what will, but at least I'll be able to overclock better! :D

I'm even in Vista... running "Hot-Fix" drivers...

I almost forget I'm running Vista Ultimate at times because I use the windows classic theme... 169 this time around, I was running less programs in the background this time too (Photoshop, Open Office, uTorrent, Peerguardian, Foobar, Dropbox, Firefox... I doubt they really matter though)

Lol, I switched from a 650i chipset to the P35 about 4 months ago. Im gona wait till I can get a really good chipset that has great support for crossfire and has options that cost less than 150.

Well... thats exactly what I bought. My Asus P5Q Pro cost only 130 @ newegg, and the P45 chipset supports crossfire with two 8x PCI Express 2.0 slots. Which based off of this review, it doesn't differ much from the X38 or X48 with the two 16x PCI Express 2.0 slots. Even though the board in that benchmark was the P5Q Deluxe, it can't differ that much from mine, and for this price I would assume mine has more value.

Ya, check post #98.

oh I thought that said 68 I was like awe man that's like a page back lol!

Sweet, well dude you will love that new mobo. Asus put some time and quality into their products, especially for the needy ocer'
