4850 Performance in HL2

Second, I stressed that all my stuff was exactly the same, so yes my test was run at 1680x1050. Besides, if i was running a lower resolution my fps should only be much higher then that benchmark.

Ah I see. I saw your original post and thought that you were comparing your 1024x768 benchmark score with the user from XS.

Yes in the original post i did only compare 1024x768 because my other monitor wasn't here. Now I have my 1680x1050 so all further tests will be at that res. Thanks for helping out though.

Thats what I get on my 4850 on Hl2 lost coast..... Idk I use 1680x1050 everything maxed completely. No Vsync

You guys are taking CPU speed for granted. I went from a OC'd P4 to a C2D and the difference was night and day in Episode 1. This was with a 1900XT back in the day, the most noticeable was the minimum framerate, especially in larger environments. When I had a slower CPU the game hovered at lower framerates.

I would again like to point out that CPU is NOT the issue here. Almost guaranteed. I have played hl2 since day 1. XP 2100, XP 2400, XP 2800, XP 3000, XP 3200, A64 3000, A64 X2 5200, A64 X2 5600. The only thing that ever changed my frame rates were my video cards and video card drivers.

My current setup gets 100+ fps in source games on max settings - not an issue. I would say try reinstalling windows and use the 8.6 + hotfix only.

As a side note, to prove its not the cpu. Gabe Newell - the creator of the source engine - said that HL2 would have 0 issues running on the Wii. Not to mention there was a version for the Xbox (not 360, but the Xbox). Both consoles run around 800 mhrz and are capable of playing the game fine.

EDIT: Thats 100+fps on 1680x1050 res with max settings.

Yea it sounds that windows is FUBARed, if u know some how get a wierd error when trying to install hot fix.

This is what you should do

1.Format , Install windows
2.INstall SYS Drivers, update windows/directx
3.install Vid drivers hot fix only
4.install game

Like I said, this is virtually a fresh install of windows, been running it only about 20 days. I don't see how formatting windows would fix an error with installing drivers... seems a little excessive to me.

It could also be your running a 32 bit game in 64 bit windows. Try 32 bit vista or xp. Either way, once you screw up the drivers like that its best to reinstall (saves time).

Nope, my brother is running Vista x64 and getting better fps with an 8800gt which is supposed to be slower then a 4850. Also the site that I linked to when I was comparing my fps to a benchmark ran Vista x64. Non-online HL2 games are able to run in 64bit. Everytime I load HL2 or Lost Coast says "64 bit mode active" at the top.

And my every time I reinstalled the drivers I used driver sweeper to make sure the files were wiped clean.

You have any type of antivirus software running in the background? What do you have running in the background, what microsoft patchs do you have?

Did you check to make sure BIOS and chipset are up to date? You made a mention of unstable RAM, have you run memtest86?

Definetely no anti-virus... and I don't run anything in background, I even disable Windows Sidebar when gaming. All my other stuff is certainly up to date, like I said re-installed 20 days ago and spent a good day getting everything up to date.

I always install the recommended Vista updates.

I did this at max settings @1440x900 and go 69FPS
Not bad considering I am running it in a x4 PCIe slot and using a E6400 CPU.
I was also downloading a patch in the background.

The game itself plays greeat.

Everything in the Source engine's history has always pointed to it being CPU bound. I'm not sure where you got the opposite impression either.

Well we are running out of options, some times a clean format fixes 90% of peoples problems. We exhausting pretty much all you u can. Format it takes an hour or 2 at most to get back up and running.

(you can screw a windows OS in seconds no matter how long ago you have done it)

Well PSU is fine and u would get alot of instability not low FPS if that was the problem

Well PSU is fine and u would get unsuitability not low FPS if that was the problem

That's what I was thinking, this seems to be either a driver or CPU issue.

EDIT:
Before I upgraded to Vista Ultimate x64 I was running Vista Business x64 so I may try installing that fresh when I get home. I won't have much time to test it because I'm going out of town at about 3pm-ish.

Has anyone else had this much trouble with a HD4850, or do I seem to be the unlucky one here?

I am getting ready to reformat and I was going to use Norton to partition my hdd to back up files and reformat the other partition for windows, and I found out that my hdd had a lot of errors on it, so much so that norton just called it "bad sector" and wouldn't let me do anything with it. So I'm currently running chkdsk to fix this and then I might try installing drivers again before reformatting to see if this could have been the problem.

The only differences between our setups or settings are:

E8400 @ 4GHz vs. E2160 @ 2.4GHz
X38 vs. G33
4GB @ 1000MHz vs. 2GB @ 888MHz
Catalyst 8.6 vs. Catalyst 8.7 Beta

Not that your performance isn't borked but thats a pretty big difference.

I absolutely agree, but I don't know much about how this game utilizes hardware so thats why i'm comparing to this to see if anyone else can see something wrong here. I really want it to be the cpu because i'm sick of uninstalling drivers and what not. If its the cpu I will be content with it because I bought this cpu knowing it wasn't going to be a performance horse.

PCI-E stuck at 1x?

The LC stress test on my E6400+8800GTS512 is over 200

Ok ran some more Lost Coast Stress tests at different resolutions, here's what i get:

Settings:
All High, 4x MSAA, 8x AF

lc1280fy2.jpg

lc1440zb3.jpg

lc1680ob1.jpg

Now from what I hear, if i'm getting these almost EXACT same fps at even much lower resolutions then its a cpu bottleneck.

Also interesting note:
During the splash menu screen of HL2 Lost Coast when birds are flying around over the water, my GPUZ shows that my gpu is at 98% load constant, not one drop below. However, when I was actually running the stress test my gpu was between 50%-60% load. This seems to be that because the splash screen is just a video looping in the background, it only has to go through the gpu and not cpu, but obviously stress test uses cpu so if the cpu were bottlenecking perhaps the gpu wouldn't get enough info to have to run at higher load?

OKAY! IT IS NOT A CPU BOTTLE NECK!!! Camaro I like your desktop background! That's my second dream car, I'll own the Scaglietti first though :) Though I'm telling you there is nothing wrong with your equipment, though you may be the only unlucky one with a 4850. I have the same monitor you have and I have the same operating system you have. Not to mention the same video card.

So all this inlies me to say it IS!! your motherboard, with something in the bios -OR- it's a driver recognition. I don't care what GPUz says, I don't trust that stuff. Go into your bios and make sure it's running at 16x, and if it is. It might seem interesting enough to see what your gpu would do if you ran it at 8x bus. You say you're out of town, but you should PM when you get back. I'm in Alaska, but I do this for a living and would be willing you give you some help.

Also just to prove to you guys it's not a bottle neck, I'm going to go home and OC my P3 to 800 mhz and run CS with an old VOODOO3! 16MB card and get 20+ fps. If you can't imagin a C2D doing a trillion times better.

If you want me to i can set up a box out of spear parts and make a pentium D w/ 1gig ram and a 8800gts (G92) and see how it does @ 1600x1200.

EDIT-
AKeZtArGeT

I totally agree with you bro, i do this for a living as well.

Haha guys I totally appreciate your enthusiasm in the matter, and I'm not trying to say either of you are wrong. I have a strong hardware background but almost no software knowledge in terms of how things are programed to run on components. But the reason I keep bringing everything up is that I'm the type of person that exhausts every possible explanation when attempting to solve these types of issues, I'm just trying to be sure that nothing is being skipped over.

I was thinking motherboard as well, I wish my brother wasn't a selfish prick and would let me test my card on his 680i board. I'll be home Sunday evening and I plan on re-formatting first thing when I get there.

AKeZtArGeT: I will certainly PM you when I get back and let you know my status, I'm on EST btw. Also I love the F430 Scuderia and I have driven the 612 Scaglietti before, it was very fun.:D

Ya, I could see it being a BUS limitation on your motherboard for sure. Makes way more sense.

I am a programmer by profession and training. With direct X programming, everything is sent to the card to be processed and rendered. The things your cpu controls are stuff like the physics (not for long by the looks of the new gen cards, even your 4850 is supposed to handle some physics). So you can pretty much exclude the cpu as the Havok calculations in HL2 are easy handled by an 800 mhrz processor.

Now I guess if your CPU was limiting the BUS speed on the motherboard, then you could blame it, but since its all running at the right speeds, there may be a fault. Wont know until you do some fresh install testing.

*DROOL* I'm not helping you anymore, you made me the most envious Mofo in the world. Yeah that car is the only reason I'm going to college lol.

Yes, I wasn't saying you were saying we were wrong. I was talking about the people who keep bringing the issue of it being the cpu. I as well have been playing cs since beta 3.1 when you had half life 0.0.5.1 and cs was just a mod that you had to download. I have riding the VALVE bus for 8-9 years now? Holy toledo, but I was just comming from a scientific approach if it don't work gut that bitch.

Yeah, you should tell your brother you need to find out if it's your card or your motherboard. I bought all ASUS for this reason infact, I wanted to KNOW my hardware and such would work without problems. I put my computer together in 2 hours when I bought it pushed the power it worked. I bought the ASUS 4850, arrive in 5 days? Meh I live in Alaska, that's the pits about this place, everything takes 5 days... BUT I got it, inserted, pluged in the the power, and started my computer. Installed the drivers from the disk and boom, worked perfectly. So your situation is some freak accident or something of the sort. It would be interesting to see what your RAM is running at, as that in lou could have an affect on your system. Yeah hit me up whenever, this is how I get away from work :D

Now from what I hear, if i'm getting these almost EXACT same fps at even much lower resolutions then its a cpu bottleneck.

I am inclined to agree with you. Seems a little odd, since that processor should be more than adequate. However, just to be sure you are getting the ~80fps with all settings to maximum including AA/AF etc, right? If so, is it really worth the headache of all this work when 80fps is more than adequate for a good experience...

its also possible its the board ... not enough BW for the card... like its on 8x.. BIOS upgrade perhaps? To bad you bro wont let you try it on his box.

Really though I think it's a problem with your motherboard and the bios. I had found the same problem with a Foxconn board for a differant user. I think their bios are messed! I'd check that out before reformatting, though it may be your only hope. I will do some more research for you just to see what this really is.

Idk I get about the same as him..... I got 93fps. And I have just a tad bit faster clock on my cpu.......

WELL YOUR SHIZ IS WEAK! Naw lol, I don't know what to tell you. I am pretty good about explaining things over differant types of communication, but these problems go indepth to the smallest thing could be the problem. Hard to explain that your bus isn't going 16 up and 16 down with an unsavy person.
