Well my brother 4850 giving problems. tried to install catalyst 10.4 and then is when the horror started. After restart the card would show bios post. xp loading screen then when it starts xp the there is no display. you hearing all the windows loading sounds but no display. so i revert back to board igb and everything show fine. so I do a driver clean. after driver clean reboot again. same problem. so i did driver clean again. same problem been trying every which way with old catalyst version to install but when i am on igb the catalyst driver not seeing t the 4850 but it does do the bios post and xp loading screen but no xp itself. so i think it must be hd issue now. so before i go put on clean copy of xp any other suggestion s?

just do a clean reinstall. If XP itself is not showing up, it's because the driver isn't loading (default/"generic vga" drivers are, however - so the loading screen shows up).

Also, did you plug the monitor cable into the HD4850, or into the IGP?

with igp everything work fine. with 4850 show post plus windows xp loading screen. then cuts outs. guess i be reinstalling windows some time latter this week

Can you access safe mode? If so you may be able to do a system restore. That will save you the hassle of a fresh install.

tried safe mode before and had no luck :( . like the default drive is corrupt as well :(

I think he means do a system restore to the old catalyst version and see if that helps. Just start rolling back any changes from the time that it worked until it didn't (if anything else changed). If that doesn't work, do a clean install of XP. It's not like all his stuff is lost if you do this because you can use the IGP to get into windows and back up his stuff.

Yeah if you open system restore you'll be able to choose a restore point (if system restore is enabled) which is essentially like time traveling your machine to an earlier time.
