Let me start off by saying this is a brand new system and it very well may be something in another part of the system but I dont know for sure. The system specs are as follows...

E7200 OC'd to 3.8 GHZ
Asus P5Q Pro MB
2GB OCZ PC6400 4-4-4-15
ATI HD4850
Seagate 250GB Sata II HD
Vista Ultimate 64-bit

Once I had the system up and running with the 8.6 drivers i found out there was a hotfix so i downloaded it and installed. but once I started playing games I noticed my games were very fluid but would stutter very often.

I ran the crysis demo at 1280x1024 on medium settings and the game still stuttered very often. anytime i would raise the gun to shoot or use the Binoculars the games would freeze for a second.

this also was present on Call of Duty 4 but was far less extreme but would drop from 100-120fps to 20-30 but less often then in crysis but enough to make the game stutter.

my system is stable and passed many hours of prime 95 testing on the overclock
this is kind of depressing as i thought it would be able to handle crysis at this resolution much much better then this... Is there anything I can do to fix this I KNOW this card is capable of more then this...

ALSO i uninstalled the hotfix drivers ran driver sweeper and reinstalled the standard 8.6 drivers and the problem is still there.. Im tempeted to try the beta drivers but something tells me it wont help.

Greetings:
I've got different specs than you do.
AMD X2 4200 Dual Core
MSI motherboard
Seagate and WD Sata drives
Vista Ultimate 32, But the symptoms are the same.

A few details I want to mention are:

AMD Power Monitor is a small application that shows graphical activity per core in real time, similarly to the Task Manager graphical interface. Both of these apps show my 2nd core to be pegged between 95 and 100 percent at idle. Checking the computer left idle on the desktop for hours at a time with nothing else open, no screen saver, no dreamscreens running showed core 2 pegged. The AMD CCC version 8.5, 8.6, and the HOT FIX all have a final page for overlocking info. The right side hase the temp monitor and activity indicator. My temps hovered around 80*, but the activity indicator shows 99% activity at idle.

I bring this all up because I replaced an ATI 1650XT with the 4850 after cleaning with DriverCleaner and the resulting stutter was the same as yours in STALKER, FEAR and Bioshock. This was not an issue with the 1650. After two days of tinkering, I reformatted and reinstalled bucause I thought I may have had a rootkit or something my NOD32 missed on my 2 month old fresh install of Vista32. Same stutter and core #2 pegged. So I uninstalled the 4850 and used DriverCleaner again. I reinstalled the 1650 and used the 8.6 CCC driver. My stutter is gone in the mentioned games and both cores show no activity at idle.

I'd appreciate any follow up you have or input on further steps you took. I'm now leaning towards a defective card but I want to know if theres a step I've missed. These results apply with or without the AMD apps that are for dual core optimization and etc. installed. I'm unfamiliar with any Intel based drivers/apps that you may need, but I'm interested in your results.

Thanks for getting this far.
Regards, etc.,

Oned....:
MR referenced a new build using an ATI HD4850. I assumed it was an initial vid card install. He replaced an ATI driver with a newer hotfix driver that ATI released a few days later. I beieve his motherboard is ATI based and he seems to have used driver sweeper at least once. My install was replacing an ATI 1650 with an ATI HD 4850 on an ATI based motherboard as well. I used DriverCleaner before each install.

Thanks for taking time to help in this matter. I don't yet know whether this is a problem restricted to a very few malfunctioning cards, or a wider hardware compatability question.
Regards,
Rick

Well I have not found a specific fix for my problem. I have checked all the asus drivers for my motherboard all seem to be up to date. According to 3dMark Vantage the use of 8.7 beta drivers give me the most performance. The stutter has gone away for the most part with all games but crysis.

Crysis seems to stutter at 1280x1024 on Medium setting which should just not be happening. Further observation in Crysis shows me my fps ranges from about 25-40fps during play and when the game stutters its more of a freeze frame for a bit and the FPS meter never drops. Something tells me the stutter is coming more from some kind of loading from or to the ram or something then an overall FPS drop so im not sure exactly how to go about fixing this issue

It can vary between three different things in your system:

Amount & speed of RAM. Corsair has done tests on different configurations of RAM and has found that 4GB boosts the minimum FPS over 2GB.

CPU speed & type. A 3GHz Wolfdale will pump the card more data than a AMD 4800+ (I chose a random one.)

Also your HDD. Speed & size also affect it.

Edit: just saw your specs, Crysis has a penchant to run better on systems with 4GB and Crysis does max out the RAM usage on my friend's 4GB PC. Most probably a upgrade to 4GB will solve the problem, it did the same to my friend.

This just sounds like a memory issue. I have 4gb or ram, but only 3 can be seen by my 32bit OS, and I get some occasional stuttering in Crysis, especially in the benchmark. In addition, I've also noticed similar hiccups occuring in other demanding games like World in Conflict, and even on occasion in less demanding games like Portal. In my opinion, the reason for this must be ram and or hard drive related, as it seems as though the games must pause every so often to fetch data.

Crysis doesnt use all that much memory and I never had any stuttering. I played it on sig rig and with an 8800gt on various settings and never came close to using 2 gigs. In fact STALKER used much more system memory. Gears of War is the only game I have played that actually used almost all my memory and resulted in some hitching.

MRecio,

It sure seems that something is wrong...I can not imagine that the ram would make that big of a difference.

I'm able to run Crysis at mostly high settings at 1680x1050 without any issues. I'm also running Vista Ultimate 64bit but I have 4gb of ram. I have a Core 2 Quad but I'm "only" running it at 3.0 GHz.

Is your Crysis patched to newest version?

I can pull one of my 2gb sticks of ram this evening and test performance if you want me to.

The COD issue, try these two things. Turn on Smooth Mouse, and enable Dual Video cards option. I was having major stuttering in COD 4 and it was not an FPS issue. Turning both of these on fix COD 4 perfectly.

can someone confirm having 4gb of ram would fix this issue as i have some stuttering as well

Well when I looked on Crysis in game display it only says its using between 900-100mb of ram at any time... if ram is causing this can I force Crysis to use more ram? I am pretty sure the video card is not to blame as the stutter is pretty consistant with various resolutions and game settings. the other thing might be that this IS THE DEMO as I wanted to try it before I bought it. Does anyone know if the demo is not optimized in comparison to the release version with patches?

And as for my COD4 issues they were fixed when I switched to the 8.7 beta drivers. now my fps is 90-110 with max settings dropping down to 50-60 when im inside a lot of smoke but the game stays smooth and doesnt stutter when it happens so I am very happy with CoD.

it stutters on my copy of crysis and this is the complete game im using the hotfix drivers though

Drudging this up from the past it would seem I also suffer from odd COD4 stuttering when outside. To top it off, IQ does not seem to be up to par on some objects. Anyone else w/ similar issues?
