Hi I've lurked but haven't really posted on this board.

I'm planning my most ambitious system ever power wise and have never purchased a powersupply over 550W. I'm looking at this 850W powersupply (since Kyle suggest at least that for 480SLi) on newegg.

This thing is 80+bronze and is amongst the Tier 1 PS's from this guy's post:

I'm wondering if this is a good PS, since it's only 100 dollars atm, WITH free shipping. It is modular, and advertises 4x6+2 pins with 12v@@35A (somewhere I read 42A for 480's but I'm not that knowledgeable. Is it 42 total on all 12V rails?)

Anyway I don't know that much, if you have a suggestion for a good PS under 160 for 480Sli please make it!

Edit: Alternatively, you could go with one of the above-mentioned suggestions, or head to Fry's for the $99 Antec TP 850w Quattro. Is 850w cutting it close? I'm not sure... haven't read up Fermi pwr req
850W would be enough, but that particular PSU has a fairly low +12V capacity for an 850W unit and I wouldn't use it for a system like this.

Hmm, that list is so old, outdated, copied, and with virtually no metrics whatsoever as to what exactly makes a Tier 1 PSU better than a Tier 2 PSU. In addition, there's no proper PSU review or at the very least an in-depth forum thread for each of the PSUs and PSU lines.

So for future reference, don't use that list as a reference. It's pretty flawed.

For best bang for the buck value, go for the 950TX at $160.

Dropping 1K+ into gpu's and then trying to get by with the minimal psu isn't a good idea. Go for a high end psu that can handle the extreme loads, plus have room for OC'ing.
