480GB SSD suggestions?

Could anyone suggest a good 480GB SSD? I've been looking around, and am leaning towards another Corsair Force GT variant, but wanted to ask the community if they thought there was another better performance/value SSD in comparison.

Also, is it a good time to purchase, or should I wait till the Xmas deals?

Any opinions/advice is well appreciated!
 
Black Friday and Cyber Monday are only about one month away. If you are not in a rush, it wouldn't hurt to wait until then. Some sweet deals will probably pop up. Last year on Cyber Monday I got an 80GB Intel SSD 320 for $70 AR (this is back when drives of this capacity were selling for $120 or so).

Since you don't mind SandForce I think any drive with Synchronous memory will perform similarly. Check out the new Force GS, it uses Toshiba toggle mode memory which is supposed to be faster than the GT.
 
If you go with two drives in RAID keep in mind that you have to have Z77 in order to get TRIM support.
 
To be honest, I'm not considering Raid 0 simply because I just want more capacity for installing more games on. Don't get me wrong, it would be nice, just unnecessary for my usage. My 120 GB drive is getting to its limit too often for me. Maybe a 256GB drive, but I want to go bigger and just get it out of the way =)....unless 1TB SSD make their appearance soon, which I doubt. But who knows, right?
 
Even with Black Friday/Cyber Monday I don't expect to see extreme deals on 512GB SSD's. You will see 128 and 256 blowouts, but they have no reason to blow out the 512's right now. The only ones they may deal on are drives like the 480GB OCZ Agility drives they have been dealing on recently, but I wouldn't put OCZ ANYTHING in any of my boxes.
 
its not worth it to do raid0 with ssds because of the lack trim working properly. like over time it just get slower and slower even if it takes months eventually it will happen. I got to the point where a single m4 256gb was similar in performance to 3 intel 320 120gb drives

Well if you were looking at a 480GB, surely you would go with an additional 256GB, no?

Well, I didn't really have a specific capacity number in mind. Just an idea of having a single, very large SSD, although that was the priciest option. was thinking I could move my existing SSD to my laptop. I think I will wait till some sort of sale is on, and go for a 480GB or a 512GB corsair or Plextor.
 
Buy two 256GB and move your 120GB to your laptop, and save a wack of $$. Seems simple to me. :D

In my idiocy, my mobo choice has only 2x 6gb sata ports =/
 
Well in reality your 3GB ports will offer the same performance. Make one of your SATA 6GB your Win install, the second your most used games, then every SSD after that your additional SATA ports, as they will be unnoticeably slower. The myth that one needs a 6GB SATA for a SSD is exaggerated. Are you really believing a SSD is slow when it isn't on a 6GB SATA port?

The fact it does cost more $$ really leaves me head scratching. Large drives are useful for massive data movement. If you work with HD video, you might want to RAID 0 a pair of big TB+ drives as your data drives. I don't see how SSD's fit into that model at all.

Please explain. My understanding is that all memory has a certain number of write/erase cycles. For example, if you're memory can handle 5,000 cycles, then:

256 GB x 2 x 5,000 = 2.56 PB

512 GB x 5,000 = 2.56 PB
 
Two drives may be cheaper, but I'm trying to avoid file management hassle across multiple drives.

Which ever way you slice it two equal SSD's are far more efficient, faster and have longer longevity then a single drive doing the same workload. And the main point, CHEAPER!
 
Games. All of them. Complete library installed, with room to spare for more. Media will go on an additional 3TB I plan to get with it.
 
You have more the 250GB of game data? Wow, in that case get another 250GB SSD when needed. You are already planning on extended data HDD's, so whats the worry of file management hassles you mention?
 
I went through a 120 GB drive quickly. I expect to fill up a 256 GB drive just as fast.

My logic is that if that does happen, then I'd have to deal with getting an additional SSD later. Why not just get it over with first time round and get the capacity I want - without having to fiddle with data management across 2 SSD's later on? Yes, it is more costly in the present, but not by much (within brand models).

The 3TB drive would be strictly for media (movies, music, photos etc) & system backups which my current drive 2TB is doing and approaching max capacity quickly. It would merely be an added storage drive i.e. separate files not related to program installations in windows - which games would be.

Essentially, run time program files on one disk, stand-alone files on a storage drive(s). Currently, my steam library is spanned across the SSD and storage drive using a third party utility.

In addition, my plan is to relegate the demoted SSD to my laptop with each SSD upgrade (& in any future systems I build or laptops I purchase).

I will build a central storage server eventually...sigh

Kingston also puts thermal pads on the memory chips and controller, something that most other manufacturers don't do.

In summary, yes that's a good choice.

There's nothing wrong with 3,000 write and erase cycles. "Premium" drives like the regular HyperX have memory that is rated for 5,000 cycles. But please realize that in the real world these drives can write several hundred terabytes of data before failing. In the real world, you could write 20 GB of data to these drives every day and it would last 20 years. Unless you are really punishing the drives with lots of small files and hundreds of gigabytes per day the drive will become obsolete before it wears out.

There are many different drives being tested but here is one example: an Intel SSD 320 with 40 Gigabytes worth of memory. They wrote 190,000 Gigabytes to it before its wear indicator said it was worn out. They then continued writing another ~400,000 Gigabytes before it failed.

My point is that an average desktop user like you or me will never exhaust these things.

I was going to add another 240GB to the mix and Raid them but now I'm seeing this is a bad option if I'm a P67 based motherboard. If I have to buy a new motherboard to get trim, I might as well sell my 240GB and get a 480GB and save the money on the board.

Thoughts?

I'm in a similar situation, having a P67 board. Nice though it would be to just grab another SSD and RAID it, having to buy another mobo this late in the lifecycle of Sandy/Ivy Bridge doesn't make much sense to me. If I'm buying a new mobo, it's gonna be for Haswell/Broadwell.
