i want your input guys, should i get a 470 or the 5870. i dont game that much. i like the newer 400 series because in higher resolutions they are the best. the 5870 is an "old" card now. so what do you think?

isnt the 5870 and 480 on the same playing field? And the 470 vs the 5850. Sounds like youre sold on the GTX470 though

actually the 5870 is only around 10 to 15% slower then a GTX480 so I doubt there is any reason to consider a a GTX470 over a 5870 given the difference in power, price, and availability. In my mind the ONLY thing the GTX480 has going for it is that its the single fastest single gpu solution available. the GTX470 is kinda of non issue card.

Some people say they really like their 470s. Myself I don't see the point of the card since it's not as fast as a 5870 and struggles at 2560x1600 resolution. Maybe you could get a pair of them to SLI, if you can't get your hands on a 5970. That's about the only reason I'd see to go with 470s. And please do NOT pay over MSRP for a 470, that would make its value even worse.

Get the damn 400 series card & just be done with it. If anything return it if you happen to not be satisfied. Get what you like, /thread

Sharp pickup. If he already likes the 400 series, that's probably what he's going to buy regardless of advice. :D

Considering that the 470 is on par performance wise with the 5850, why are you even considering it against the 5870. The 470 is way hotter, uses way more electricity, than the 5870 and is no where close to the 5870 in performance.

So I'd like to ask, which card would you consider the best buy

If you can afford a 5870 get the 5870. It's performance is great than that of the 470, it will consume less power and it will run cooler.

If you really don't like the idea of going red than get a 470 and be done with it, but I'd rather have a 5870. The GTX480 is the only Fermi card worth having in my opinion.

I wouldn't say the 5800's are "Old" but rather Fermi is "Late".

5870, they run cooler and draw less power than a 470 and 480, and plus the 5870 is faster than the 470 GTX.

The 5870 is the better card. Both are overkill for non gaming scenarios and not sure what you mean by "at higher resolutions the 400 series are best" the 470 literally does nothing better than the 5870. Wait, I take that back, it does folding better.

Seems to me you want a 400 series card so get one. In terms of whats the best:

480
5870
470 / 5850

Keep your 260, why would you spend money if you barely game?

260 is fine for gaming, but if you absolutly need something shiny, get the 5870

this

Not to mention that if you dont game much, why would you want a card that would consume more power @ idle & then perform worse while gaming?

get a 5870

what about the new technology in the 400 series? doesn't the new 400s have the new 2d accelaration technology or no?

Doesn't matter. You would not notice an iota of difference between the GTX 400 series and any of the HD 5xxx series cards in normal desktop usage. Unless you do a ton of folding or have many or primary usage apps that takes advantage of CUDA, just go with the HD 5870 for gaming.

this. the only thing the GTX4780/480 does that the 5870 doesn't do is cuda. and if Stanford comes out with a new client that advantage is going to diminish in terms of folding. of course the other cuda apps may mean things to other people but by and large the GTX480 is simply the fastest single GPU you can buy and that is about it.

If you are deadset on the 400 series, I'd hold off for a bit and see if the GTX460 shows up and ends up being worthwhile. It might be a better fit for your needs.

thanks. i gonna get the 470. it's a lot better than what i have now...

and if Stanford comes out with a new client that advantage is going to diminish in terms of folding.

except that none of the currently released clients support the 400 series cards, and decent support for ATI cards in the near future is wishful thinking at the moment. though they should have a client out somewhat soon to take advantage of the fermi.

i would have picked up a 480 for folding and a lesser extent of gaming already if i wasnt so irritated with the way nvidia botched the whole fermi design and launch. i also wish ATI could hold a candle to nvidia in terms of folding potential. unfortunately im stuck between a card i dont want to like that is full of design flaws, and a card with inferior performance for what i need it to do.

Congrats!

You completely ignored every single person in this thread. Why would you even ask for advice. If the question was, "which card to pick, 5870 or 480?" then you would have had some real consideration to do. The 480 is faster by about 10% on average, but has the heat, power, and noise disadvantage.

However, choosing a 470 over a 5870 for gaming, when it is significantly slower, and has the negative noise/heat/power factored in, is simply laughable.

Enjoy your inferior video card!

it is cheaper though, maybe drivers will make it faster in the future. but buying a 5870 is still a better idea imo. owell enjoy your new gpu

lol, I dont even get why you guys even bothered, op had already made up his mind before he even made this thread.

I am not so sure if I am the only one with lots of issue with driver right now

I have constant crash with L4D2 and StarCraft 2. Every once awhile, the game crash.

and for games like SF4, if I play for awhile and alt-tab, the game crashes again..

these things starting to drive me nuts....

not quite sure if I am the only one who keep experience this kind of issue...

I really dont put my hope up for the driver yet.. since they said they will be releasing 256 driver this month, but no....

Not being able to use custom resolutions/refresh rates with amd videocards has been a turn off to me. Considering this feature is standard with nvidia for years now. Everytime I use that feature to play games so glad I have it and don't have to rely on 3rd party to do it.

what do you mean by custom resolution and refresh rate?

I set both without a issue beside there do have some issue with 120Hz on Eyefinity from my testing...

people sometimes have lots of problems due to the motheboard been uncompatible.

In the nvidia drivers you can make your own resolution and refresh rate. For LCD users it's probably not an issue, but I use a CRT. For years I was using a non standard refresh rate something at 100hz. In the nvidia drivers just plug in the numbers and hit test and done. There's nothing like that in the radeon drivers and you have to resort to using a 3rd party utility that runs in the background to do the same thing.

My only guess is that amd just doesn't know how to make a custom refresh rate tool otherwise I think they would of done it years ago. Relying on 3rd party isn't a good idea cause if the drivers break the 3rd party then you're SOL.

I miss the old days when windows had built in refresh override for D3D cause then I wouldn't need to use the custom resolution at all.

Or, and this is far more likely, it just isn't a feature that is requested anywhere near enough for ATI to bother. Not many people run CRTs, and EDID solved the problem of needing custom refresh rates years and years ago. And since there are 3rd party tools as you've already mentioned, I don't think ATI will ever include the feature since its only going to get less important as time goes by.

You could also install you're monitors INF if it has one - then you don't need to force a custom rate at all.

I highly doubt it..

It doesn't just happen to me, I been seeing quite lot of people reporting SC2 issue.

Already have issue before, even with my old 8800 GTX with the newer driver, the older driver works fine though. Highly doubt its Motherboard issue.
while the 5870 I sold work without a single problem on this game.
since this game still in beta testing, so I am not putting too much hope for nVidia to fix this issue before actual launch.

Congrats!

If it's any consolation, this thread has pushed me further to getting a 5870 to pair with a new RE3 coming this Tues.

Last time I went ATI it was a nightmare of epic proportions, but the 5870's have a mostly good rep, and anything that's cooler than a 480 is fine with me.

Thanks! ;)

Also since AMD is refreshing the whole 5000 series product line this year it may be worth to wait if you haven't upgraded yet. In 6 months they'll probably have new cards available. If it was a year away I wouldn't bother suggesting to wait.
