im looking to upgrade the system in my sig. Im looking to spend about 400-500 dollars. Thing is im not sure what to spend it on. All my monitors are kinda crappy, 60hz refreash rate, non flat-CRT's and my old ass mid tower atx case is ugly as shit, with no side panels you know. I also wouldnt mind having a new vid card or maybe the mx wirerless i dunno. More RAM might be cool, also i have thought about about like some major cooling upgrading like tec coupled w/ a custom water job i just wanted some great minds to weigh in.

i would get a nice lcd monitor like the NEC 1760. you could probebly find one for $400. it will run at 1280x1024 and 16ms. or get a 21" CRT if u got the room. theres a really nice one, i cant remember the name but its like NEC 2142 i think

I say get a nice LCD, (or the ultimate CRT) and is it as your main monitor, then buy a cheap extra PCI graphic card and go triple monitors

i already have 3 mons:cool: lol so the general consensus is a new monitor not graphics card or a TEC or ram?

If I was you, I would definitely replace that graphics card, however, I would wait for ATi and nVidia's upcoming line of cards, as they are literally doubling the speed and throughput of their predecessors.

The one thing you have to do no matter what, is look at your monitor. If you don't like the ones you have, then that would be the best thing to replace at this point. I would go with at least a 19". I have an NEC FE950+ that I got over three years ago and I love it. I personally don't care for LCDs. They are just too expensive for what I would like. There is no way I'm going to pay more for an LCD that isn't as good as the monitor I currently have. If you would like an LCD, make sure you go and check some out at a store first to see if you like them or not. It's never a good idea to skimp on the monitor and it's always best if you can go look at what you are wanting to buy even if you don't buy it from the place you saw it at.

drop 100 bucks and get an antec sonata case.

drop 75 and get the logitech wireless mx duo.

15 bucks on a ratpadz GS.

210 for a radeon 9800 pro.

all at the egg.

thats the best 400 bucks youre gonna be able to put in that system.

I'm gonna go w/ one of those monitors. Which one is a better choice?

CHIEFTEC Dragon Servers Series Black Aluminum Model AX-01BD U2F SF
I kinda have my heart set on this case unless someone says it sucks. And do ya'll think it will have enough room for a DIY 1/2" watercooling setup.

and as 4 a vid card i plan to overclock but, will a o/ced 9800 pro keep good pace past HL2 a D3 i know no one knows b/c they arent out yet but, any guesses? Also when are the new lines expected from nvidia and ATI? maybe ity would be better to wait and save

thanks for all the great post so far!

PS at 60 bux im sure i can save that much more for the duo setup;)

60hz monitors..you got to kidding? If your not, get those things replaced before you go blind. Ok, you won't go blind, but 60hz sure induces eyestrain.

I never have figured out why people build high end systems and use them with crappy monitors.

NEC/mitsubishi

Nice case; also look at the new Chieftec BX cases. (Also at 'Egg)

9800Pro should last you a while. :) Also, what's wrong with using a cheapass SiS card for your tertiary monitor? Not like you need hardware overlays on it or anything. How do you use yours, anyway? I had mine set up with my first monitor (PCI Ati Rage) carrying Winamp, Outlook, Trillian, my FTP server, and the system tray, and #2 and #3 on the Ti4200 open for whatever. #2 (center) was the primary, of course, for gaming use.

The problem w/ the sis card is b/c the colors are kinda shabby and when moving winamp around it lag (the skin like is cut into pieces while it moves and goes back together after being still) but i usally have 2 IE windows open and one monitor filled w/ aim windows or me and my friends will watch a movie and ill set it up on all 3 screens (nveiw clone setting)main monitor has YZ's dock and the one on my left has win xp start menu

And the reason i used "crappy" monitors was b/c i got 3

Definitely upgrade the monitor first. I've got one of those 5600FX's in a spare system, and while it's no speed-demon it's definitely adequate for gaming. A 60hz 'bubble' crt isn't!

There are a ton of great monitor options in your price-range. Someone already mentioned the NEC FE950+, and it remains one of the best (both in price and in quality) flat CRT monitors today.

So, yeah, that's my vote: Buy yourself a nice flat CRT trinitron monitor, or buy yourself a nice LCD display.

Every time you use your computer you'll be looking at that display, and believe me when I say that a new monitor makes you feel like you're using a new computer.

Oh yeah, you could get a triplet of nice 17" monitors for about $420 shipped from 'Egg. KDS XF7-T, or something like that.

Ok, I feel like an idiot now. I had my monitor set at 60hz for..... well forever with this one. I've had it for 3 years or so now. I just set it to 85hz and holy shit. You can really notice a difference.
