4 Cards in SLI

if you look at the picture there are clearly 4xPCie slots meaning you could run 4 cards@8x ea. or 2 @16x

Sheesh! With that much power, one core could be used JUST to apply AA and AF to whats rendered by the other cores!

Wait, thats not a bad idea! A dedicated AA/AF chip!

hmm. 4 gpus, no room for a sound card! better have some decent onboard sound.

The Creative SB live 24bit on my MSI board rawks... :) With all that video processing power on a 4 GPU setup, I think there could be shielding issues with any onboard sound, though... could be some extra hum in there... doh!

but what intel cpu is going to be powerfull enough to avoid a bottleneck (well as little of a bottleneck as possible lol)?

INEPT COMPERISON! the fx55 is at stock. if you max oc the fx55, it will run circles around that P-M
INEPT COMPARISON! Look at the pricing of the two.

Oh man. 32... But I'd never get it. Far too expensive for me. :(

Not sure if you knew this already, but that's ATi's fourth multi-GPU rendering scheme in Crossfire...a dedicated AA/AF card. If this could be used like that...a dual 6800U card for the basics and a second dual card for just the AA and AF, an AGEIA PPU and a nice sound card should round out the best gaming experience available (too bad its on a weak-in-the-gaming-knees P4).

I paid about what it costs to put together a single FX 55 system with Dual 64 bit/2MB cache Xeons and 2GB of RAM with a Quadro FX 3400 (equivalent of a 6800GT), so I'd say you can do pretty well buying Intel right now too. Not only will my system play Doom 3 or HL2 just fine, but it will run circles around a single processor FX when I'm watching Aqua Teen Hunger Force, burning a DVD, and running anisotropic diffusion filters on my 600MB, fifty layer Photoshop image.

AMD's are great, but if you bargain shop you can outdo the FX for the same or less $$$ from Intel. People are just saying Intel sucks for gaming thanks to Prescott sucking for a while. Now Intel has good CPU's too, so its all a matter of brand loyalty or trying to "stick it to the man" by buying AMD or ATI. Its like its following corporate greed in some people's minds to buy Intel even though they make good products, and did it before AMD did. AMD just tried to undercut and out do Intel, but IBM owns them all.

I would love it if somebody explained how you can separate AA and AF from the "other stuff". AF is applied during texture reads and AA is applied when writing out samples to the framebuffer. Exactly how are you going to separate them out of the regular shader pipeline? ATi's solution is not a dedicated AA/AF card - where did that come from? Each card is probably doing 6xAA with jittered texture coordinates and the resultant blend of the frames from both cards would produce an effective 12xAA.

Here is what I don't get...

Everyone was saying how great it would be to go SLI (I did BTW), you could buy one card now, and then buy another one later...Great upgrade potential..

Now the rumors are flying that nvidia is cutting back on production of its' 6800 line of cards...to obviously be replaced by G70 series cards...I want to say this has been confirmed on some level but I can't place the article right now...

So what about the next-gen solution with FOUR slots...Buy two now, buy two later...great upgrade potential  They should stick with dual slot boards, with the ability to support more PCI Express lanes, and pack the GPUs onto just two cards. I mean I am all for making it if it is possible...People will be waiting in line for this tech don't get me wrong...but if I hear people say "hey great upgrade potential" I am going to hunt you down and kick you in the nuts...

The ONLY way I see a QUAD PCI Express slot board as some what of a good idea is if nvidia plans on keeping the 6800 series out there long enough for people who have a current SLI setup to add two more cards...and they sure a $hit aren't going to do that...that would cost both card manufacturers and themselves alot of money...not to mention all that fabrication potential "wasted" on the older, slower series cards.

Last thing, if you think that this tech won't make it to AMD procs your smoking some crack...the !!!!!! crowned king of gaming isn't going to sit on the sidelines while Intel gets its' groove on...the Gigabyte P4 solution appears to be about as 'hacked' of a solution that I have seen...this quote comes to mind..

Interestingly, the board integrates two different versions of the chipset - the nForce4 SLI Intel Edition (Crush 19) represents the Northbridge, the version for AMD processors is used as Southbridge.

Yeah, that's how nvidia had planned the whole quad-SLI thing to pan out...I'll just grab a southbridge from over here, and stick it with the northbrigde over here...and BAM..I just kicked SLI up a notch...I am not saying that it isn't an ingenious solution on Gigabyte's part (it is damn clever), but there will be an nvidia chipset for AMD that supports this. And chances are, unless nvidia is lazy, you will see a new chipset from them for Intel CPUs too. If you look at the frontpage and take a look at the pics of MSI's Dual GPU solution you can see the SLI connector...do you think MSI along with all of the other multi-GPU board manufacturer's are going to limit the number of boards they can sell by focusing on an Intel only solution...

why the hell is everyone thinking about just having 3D1's and such in SLi... it says itll take 4 cards in x8 slots..

I seriously doubt the four card mobo will ever be main-stream... it will likely be sort of a novelty item... for the seriously crazed enthusiast...

Things are sure moving fast these days...
But who can be against more possibilites?
We never had so many options before..and that is GOOD! :)

Terra - You gotta love the pace of things :)

I would not say more possiblites, just more of the same. And by more I mean multiple of the same thing.

Cool idea, maybe. Pratical, no.

32 gpus. ohh man that will be the day.

I remember reading an interview about pci express, and that some guy had 30 ati radeon 9700 pros running in tandem. I forgot where i read it, sorry about not providing linkage though, but it was interesting nonetheless.

It was 32 9800GPUs used for a Flight simulator or something like that.
Brent knew.

"ati will be in trouble if this works with the new daul 6800 cards. it would make SOOO much heat though."

What combination of chemicals could possible interact to create such a moronic statement? ATI will NEVER be in any trouble for not offering a $2000 quad graphics solution.

Its cool as hell, practical, not really. Too bad Gigabyte is making it. I will never own another Gigapoop board. I'd damn near take ECS or PC Chips first.

Ok, maybe not.

They've got a nice idea with their RAMdisks too. Too bad their boards are all flash and no meat.

yeah - I think that pretty much sums it up for me also. :)

Yep. All of three people will be willing to plunk down 3000$ for the cards the MoBo and the cooling required to run those thing and be willing to sacrifice all periphrials. This is going to be a huge success. :p

Here are the things I need for gaming, Graphics, A descent sound, and a good ping, if that mobo has good onboard sound, and a good onboard ethernet adaptor I'm all for it. And if you think it's super expensive... Think of it this way, you'd get SO MUCH performance out of 4 video cards in one computer you won't have to upgrade for the next 4-5 years... so you'd actually ending up having more money, and less time of doing research and reading reviews about next-gen graphic cards about your next upgrade. And a hell lot more time on quality gaming.

How can you possibly come up with 3000 dollar for 4 video card and 1 mobo?... 4x $350 Dollars is only 1400 + mobo with 4x PCI-e slots will probably cost 300-400 dollars... thaz just 1800 dollars at max.

It's all about the glory.. For one to say the they are the ultimate in graphics power...

Remember, consumers are, in general, stupid, you can sell absolute crap to them in the low and mid range, (and they will think it's the greatest), as long as your fastest solution is faster than the other guys...
Regardless of how outrageous the means and cost of that solution...

I want one :D Will not even try to talk the wife into letting me buy it :( I would need to put a second mortgage on the house to get it ;)

do you think i would see a perfomance increace from a 5600 ultra? (sarcasm screaming out) :D

Time to bring sound storm back..

If people thought that highend dual cards were a "niche" what would you call this?..

If it were a multi cpu board, being aimed at highend graphics work stations, I could see it's usefulness.. Otherwise it's a money pit.. 4 X 6800 Ultra = $1600 to $2000+.. As much or more than I usually spend on an entire computer ..

If I was absolutely stinking rich.. I'd prolly buy one.. But, I'm not.. Lets see, hmmm, send kid to colledge, or buy this uber graphics, super, wonder comp, with 4 g70s in it.. hmmmm..

Kid, have you ever thought about a career in the food service industry? ;)
You don't neccesarily need to get 4x 6800 Ultra.... just get 4x 6800 GT thaz only about 1400 and get 4x nv silencer 5 rev2 and run it at ultra speeds. There is no such thing as expensive hardware there is only powerful hardware. The longer a hardware that can last the more value it is from my experience. I mean you're going to sell it after you use it...
