hey guys sorry if this is in wrong section. I tried to run 3dmark06 last night and got a bsod. Can anyone shed any light on why this might happen?

Offhand I would suspect heat or driver.

The driver is easy enough, just depends on what you have installed, sometimes the latest is not the best and if it is old, update to something newer. Compare the driver version on the manuf web site (if they provide them) with the ones on Nvidia's, sometimes for a specific card the manuf version tends to be the most stable.

For the heat issue either its the card (install rivatuner and have it log gpu temps as you run 3dmark) or the northbridge/MCH which passes video data from the CPU to the video card and will get hotter than say just running Prime or Orthos in a stress test. Stick your finger on the MCH while running or just with the case side off use a spare fan and blow air on it.

It is extremely easy to glue with RTV silicon adhesive a low speed (less than 2000 rpm or it will whine) 40mm fan on top of that NB/MCH and is something I recommend for ALL Intel chipsets unless the manuf already provides one. On my 3L the thermal pad/paste application of the 3L was good and it was not worth the effort to apply something like AS5. (or course one discovers this only after having ripped it off and then you have to apply something else anyway :D )

thnx for the reply. I doubt its a heat issue, I got the bsod when I try to run it. So, its not like its getting overheated in teh actual test and then bsod. It doesn't even read my system?? Well I just checked for drivers from bfg and they send me to nvidia. I did notice that I have the same version as the one nvidia reccomends but the date of the driver is different. My pc is telling me the date of the driver 169.21 is december 5th 2007, and the nvidia says that that driver was released on dec 19th? This version is a whql version I wonder if the one I got was a beta?

I came across this but when I attempted the fix of adding the nosysteminfo to target it says I cant do that.

Q: 3DMark06 exits or causes a bluescreen error whenever I try to launch it. How can this be corrected?
A: Try un-plugging any external USB/FireWire storage devices such as DVD-drives or external harddisks. Some network-attached storage devices may also cause this problem to appear, so unmounting all network drives might also help. You can also add "-nosysteminfo" at the end of the "Target:" field of 3DMark06's application shortcut to disable the SystemInfo from running when the benchmark is being launched. This should allow you to run all of the tests normally, but your results can't be submitted to the ORB if this option has been used to launch the benchmark.

ok I tried running it again and another bsod when its trying to read my system info, near the top it said "IRQL_not_less_or_equal"
and there were some technical error messages at bottom but too long to write down in time while it dumps physical memory.

I chatted with my local comp store manager and he said to things jumped to mind. 1) ram issue which I highly doubt. 2) I have an old skool soundblaster live value soundcard in a pci slot as well as onboard hs 8 channel sound enabled, and he thinks that 3dmark is hanging up on that.

thoughts....

I looked in the bios and could not see where do disable the onboard audio. Can anyone help me here?

ok I have eliminated all hardware issues so it must be software related. Does anyone have a list on known software compatibility issues?
