Greetings, I'm helping a friend price out a machine, he has never built a computer before and asked me to post this.

Use:

Memory: Crucial 4 X 2GB DDR2 1066mhz, 240 pin ($160, Crucial)

Etc:

- Lightscribe DVD Writer ($60)
- Ethernet Card ($20)
- Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit ($100 Newegg)

Price: ~$1620

Q)'s
1) Overall opinion?
2) Does he need any more cooling?
3) Where could he buy a machine like this with a slight premium from a retailer?
(Most sell only gaming machines that don't have quadros, & the Dell xw6600 or the Dell T3400 seem overpriced)
4) Should he go core i7 920, if so, what mobo and changes?

Please answer the questions in the sticjy titled "ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS FIRST" so that we can help you better.

1) Decent but you are over paying for the RAM. You can get 4GB of RAM for just $40 these days:
G.Skill F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ 2 x 2GB DDR2 800 RAM - $40

Some more thoughts:
- Make a new thread in the Video Card subforum with the title "GTX 280 VS Quadro FX1700 for 3D Animation". I'm fairly sure that the ~$320 GTX280 would outperform the FX1700 in 3D animation work but it doesn't hurt to get some confirmation.

- Which ethernet card would he be going with? Why would he need a separate NIC card?

2) Not really

3) Puget Systems might be a good choice. If you contact them directly, they will get whatever part you want.

4) With a budget of $2000, yes definitely Core i7.

Mobo wise, these are good choices for Core i7:
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R Intel X58 ATX
[URL=http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131359]Asus P6T Intel X58 ATX Motherboard
- $250
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4 Intel X58 ATX Motherboard - $260

Then swap out the DDR2 RAM for this DDR3 RAM:
G.Skill F3-12800CL9T-6GBNQ 3 x 2GB DDR3 1600 RAM - $98

Apoologies.
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
3d animation

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
2000, and I don't know

3) Where do you live?
cambridge, MA

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific.
listed.

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
none.

6) Will you be overclocking?
unknown, unimportant, but perhaps minor maxing

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
listed

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
Within the next 30-60 days

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
No to raid, no to firewire, maybe to crossfire or sli, whichever 3d animator card is better.

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license?
no
