just ran accross this from fps labs

http://www.fpslabs.com/reviews/video/amd-radeon-hd-3870-x2-review

$449 for this Ati/Amd goodness with better drivers out this thing could be even better...(they ran with older drivers so take the numbers especially with crysis with a grain of salt) not as great as i assumed but for the price unless nvidia has a similar performing card or better at or around the same price point at least one if not two of these babies will be in my system this summer

With the last couple of reviews I've read, and the user posting them regarding their credibility with a grain of salt, I do believe my blood pressure is going to skyrocket!!!

Its looking pretty good, hopefully they can price it right around the 8800GT.

i may be wrong but i think its with the 790 chipset on am2+ motherboards already my GIGABYTE GA-MA790FX-DS5 coming tomorrow has crossfirex support

Well it looks like it is kicking the shit out of the 8800GTX on its' own. So I'll take at least two 3870 X2's and I'll get an Intel chipset based motherboard so I can get away from these damned 680i SLI boards.

Anyone know when CrossfireX is coming?

Well any 790FX motherboard supports it. On the Intel side I'm not sure. There aren't too many X38 or X48 motherboards with three PCIe x16 slots. Even if they did have them it is still unclear if Crossfire X will be supported on the Intel platform.

Gigabyte GA-X38-DS5 currently supports it on the intel side.... so does Foxconn X38A i am sure you can find one in your flavor of motherboards if you look for it..... if not it will probably be out soon

The P5E3 Premium should support it. I know the Rampage Formula won't as it only has two PCIe x16 slots.

My sentiments exactly. If quadfire performs decently then get me out of nForceland.

So CrossfireX is out right now? With the right motherboard I can run more than two 3970's?

You can run more than two on any motherboard that has more than two PCIe x16 slots. I've never seen it done on an Intel processor compatible motherboard but that doesn't mean that you can't do it. You should be able to as long as ATI lets you do so through their drivers.

OFN... been posted several times already.

Dont assume an article that was dated before the day you post it, is new. ;)

Why have I never seen any benchmarks?! I must be blind. I thought we were waiting for drivers from ATi to allow more than two GPUs.

Ive been seeing prices of 450msrp listed on sites. It looks good, i'd consider it if the drivers greatly improve performance on dx10 modes.

I guess I am jaded these days, but with my current setup I am knocking on 20k 3dmark06 with a single Ultra (aircooled factory setting -660mhz) and a wc cpu on my everyday settings.

I also find the swing depending on the reviewer/review sites to be troubling. Some have the X2 barely beating/keeping up an 8800gts and others have it nuking an 8800gtx out of the water. What is up with the variation of test beds?

I am not an ATI hater. I loved my 9700, 9800 and x850, but they need to prove they can do good solid drivers on a regular basis again.

Cheers

No idea. I don't know if Crossfire X is supported on Intel chipsets. I know it should work, but that doesn't mean ATI actually allows it.

Disappointing numbers so far, lets hope [H] really put it to the test.

Gonna wait for the 9800GX2 before jumping on this. That is typically suppose to be the performance of two 8800GT's in SLI. If that holds true & seeing how the 8800GT in SLI outperform the 3870 x2 in almost every benchmark, it " should " be the better option. Time will tell though. Price is a big factor as well.

I'm still hoping Crossfire X allows me to run one 3870 X2 + my existing 3870 on an Intel chipset.

Probably a good idea.

I would like to know if I can get the most out of this card with PCIe 1.1. I would not want to upgrade my motherboard because of this if I decide to buy this card. :(

Anyone know if you can crossfire 2 X2's on an intel BadAxe rev.1?

Yes. I have heard that they support up to 4 GPUs. So I am not sure if that means up to 4 3870 X2's or just 4 GPUs in general which would mean a max of two 3870 X2's.

You'll be fine with a PCIe 1.1 board.

hmmmm, i was going to just get a single 3870 and add one in later possibly, but now the X2 seems like a much better idea, if i can budget for it.

lots of variations, will be interesting to see where this goes with good drivers and more mainstream availability

Tweaktowns review numbers seemed off to me. I even posted that in the forums and got jumped on. Noobs. What I have seen though is those sites using an older than x38 chipset getting lower numbers.

Looking at all of these reviews so far, I'm not sure why so many people are glowing. The performance is incredibly inconsistent, which is my main problem with multi-GPU solutions; the mileage simply varies too much by game. The 3870X2 looks like the card for Call Of Juarez for sure, but is slower in other titles than the 8800GT.

I expect nVidia to have the same issue with the 9800GX2 or whatever their dual-GPU product ends up being called. It’s time for next gen hardware guys. In the immortal words of our 43rd President, “Let’s Roll!”
