Well heres the problem, I have been having crashing issues with the ati catalyst driver apparent because it states that so, I have been having it since I got the card on launch, a little annoying and I thought it would be fixed by driver updates but no dice. I thought it was heat problems so I bought the accelero S1 and still got it. Underclocked it to 745/1126 and still get it. Now its just annoying and outright bs. It doesnt crash when I play games but when i do crap that really requires no gpu power like surfing or listening to music. I can't seem to find the problem. Some odd reason it crashes with ATi tool overclocked and underclocked, even stock. Now I am thinking this card is just screwed up, this is my second one too. I am sitting here and I was wondering if a possible bios flash will fix the problem? Can anyone confirm or steer me in the right direction?

Its strange, as I have had the same problems, but only with Command and Conquer 3, and various other apps in Vista, but everything else seems to work OK. I too have been waiting for a fix in the drivers, as my system was perfectly stable until this new card.

Are you getting the atimkdag.sys error? I recently upgraded from an X1900XT to a 3870 and everytime I try to play a game the graphics driver stops responding which usually results in a freeze. If I play in windowed mode the game will freeze but recover. Full screen causes a hard lock that takes a reboot. Very annoying considering my pc was fine until this new card. I've done everything to fix this (including reinstall) and nothing has worked.

I'm wondering if you have a bad PCI-E slot. Have you tried a different card in that slot for a few days? Or for that matter, move the 3870 to one of the other rigs for a few days and try to reduplicate the issue?

From what i've read Phobic, its the Catalyst Control Panel problem...try reinstalling your drivers but not the CCC..When CCC is uninstalled ATIKMDAG.SV is no longer on your computer.

what power are you running, I notice you are over clocked as well............

I have been having issues with CCC OC, just does not seem to work. With 8.3 I had crashes in games, now with 8.4 the games are stable, but when ever a 2D application makes GPU work (scrolling huge pictures) I get crashes.

Some have fixed the issue by OC with atitool/rivaturner and such. BIOS upgrade is a worthy try, techpowerup is the site for that.

I was getting the crashing immediately after reinstalling Vista and NOT using CCC which was odd but whatever. I have seemed to fix my problem by underclocking my card (I'm using the Asus factory overclocked 3870). I was able to run Guild Wars (fastest game I could install at the time) in a window while I went out and as far as I know I didn't have any crashes. The game would usually crash within 15-20 mins.

I'll still have to install another game to do some more tests but hopefully this card will behave... or back to Newegg it goes.
