I'm getting a new proc today.....been putting it off for a couple of weeks and i need a home desktop pretty bad.....

i was gonna overclock and was wondering which one would yall prefer?

i know 3800+'s hit 2.4-2.7 and 4200+'s hit 2.5-2.8...........in your opinion, is the 4200+ worth the extra 35 bucks? or should i just get the 3800+ and get a arctic pro 64 or something....

(am2's btw...)

Yes, the 4200 will achieve (quite possibly) a higher overclock. This is totally a statistical average, and can't really back up my claim right now...

I dont think you'll notice the extra 100mhz... I mean, The difference between my system at 2.4 and 2.66 is barely noticible, except for the heat... I idle at 27'c at 2.4 and 30 at 2.66...

I have a 4200 X2 and I have it OC'd @ 2.8 rather easily. I watercool but I have barely noticed the 1-3° temperature increase. Basically you'll be paying 35 dollars for the extra headroom if you go with the 4200. Both processors OC well and are pretty stable. If you can afford the extra 200MHz, I'd do it.

The only benefit in terms of overclocking of the 4200 is the higher multiplier. Check out the OC database; overclocking counts far more on steppings than the difference in multipliers/initial clock frequency (most motherboards can do far more than the HTT necessary to hit 3.0). In fact, recently Newegg was shipping some steppings (X2 3800s) that were able to do 2.6 on stock voltage. Search the forums for the post.

For example my X2 3800+ can achieve "only" 2.5Ghz (at 1.568v).
Overall X2 4200+ is a better choice, because of its' higher multiplier.

Go for the 89watt 4400 with 1mb cache on each core. It has a lower THD which means you shouldn't need as much vcore to achieve a decent overclock.

(That's what I'm aiming to get if I can sell my CACJE Opty 148)...

If you don't want to go that route, I would go for the 4200 because as previously stated... the higher multi.

Good Luck!

I paid a good deal more than $35 for the difference between a 3800 and 4200. I'm happy and would do so again.

Yikes, I'm able to do 2.5Ghz on stock. What's your ram?

I use Patriot DDR500 2GB dual channel kit and it works fantastic for doing high overclocks.

To get 2.5GHz before I went further all I had to do was:

FSB: 250MHz
HT multiplier: 4x
Memory FSB: 250Mhz 3-4-4-8 1T
CPU: 10x
stock voltages.

Why the CAS of 3? ^^

I'm stuck at 2.5 at 1.38v on my 3800 too.

I can get up to 10x 266 with my Ram at 266 (2.5-3-4-7 1T 2.7v) but need to pump the voltage up to 1.48. That runs a LITTLE too warm on water for me... I get something like 38c dual prime load.

And Smoove, I think you mean TDP not THD :).

I have Corsair TwinX2048-3200C2PT. The ram isn't faulty, because I can run them at 500DDR 3-4-4-8 1.75v.
At 2.5Ghz 1.568v SP2004 is stable >10h, at 2.6Ghz 1.68v only for 3minutes.
I use multiplier 10x and HTT 4x.

Lower your HTT to x3.

Going from HTT 4x to 3x a little bit helped.
At 2.6Ghz (1.68v/HTT 4x) SP2004 was running for ~3minutes. Now, at 2.6Ghz(1.648v/HTT 3x) SP2004 is running ~20minutes. Anyway 20 minutes it's too short time for system stability.
I have also tried to a little bit increase chipset and HTT voltage, but there is no positive results:(
Please, post any suggestions what I can do to reach stable 2.6Ghz overclock.

Error I get on SP2004 is asociated with CPU, not RAM.
And you could be getting an error because your integrated memory controller cannot handle 1:1 at that speed.

Throw a divider on it and at least try.

Will my X2 3800+ be alive for ~2years, if I set his core to ~1.7v?

That's a lot. I'd just lower the OC if you need 1.7V.

Personally I wouldn't go over 1.55vcore on any A64 chip... regardless of what type of cooling I had.

My personal opinion though.

How to understand: "that's a lot"?

A lot of voltage. I wouldn't recommend using that much voltage.

I can't conclusively say that 1.7V will fry your chip in exactly 2 years, but I can't imagine it's good for it. On the other hand, in 2 years it will probably be obsolete anyway, so who cares.

I have an X2 3800 Socket 939 with an A8n-SLI motherboard.

I want to build a new computer for my brother.

He wants to take mine I said ok.
I'm going to give him my machine I don't want to be left hung out to dry.
So,,,,
I'm want to buy a X2 4200 AM2 with The Foxconn Motherboard Corsair XMS Memory DDr800

There is an article on Legit reivews describing an OC of an X2 4200 AM2 Socket
They Claim to have reached 3.0 GHZ

Has anyone here with a 929 or Am2 X2 CPU reached that clock speed with either a
X2 3800 or X2 4200

I currently am Hitting 2.6 with my 3800
With FSB at 260
Mem Set at 266MHZ
Multiplier at 3
and HTT at 10
With mem timings at 2-3-2-5-12

-Can I push this 3800 anymore or is it at it's limits ?
-I hit a CPU score of 1933 on 3dmark 06?

Will I get more out of an AM2 Core?
Will I get more out of a 4200?

-and has anyone tried attatching a Zallman Cooler to an AM2 Core. Is it Easy or do I need a Dr. Degree in Engineering to do it.

-Also My other option was to keep my 3800 but then I worry about the SLI being bottlenecked at 8x in SLI with my ASUS motherboard. Hence why I offered up my computer. 16x SLI DDR2 Memory 4200 AMD at 2.2 do the ends justify the means.

OR do I just put an 805 D into my brothers machine, Keep mine and tell him to have a nice day. He'd never know. Hence why I'm doing the build.

Thank you for any of your inputs and time in responding to my questions.

I've noticed that core number 0 always fails in SP2004. It can't even handel 2.6Ghz at 1.68v.

If you are having to push that much voltage and still unstable, the chip just simply cannot get there. If I were you, I would take it to 1.55v and see the highest you can be stable at and leave it there. My wall on my 4200+ is 2.75, I would like to get 2.8 but the chip just can't do it.

From what I've read, it sounds like your Core 0 is just weak. It happens sometimes and no amount of extra voltage is going to help it. Personally, I'd either just sell the chip and get a new one if you HAVE to OC it to 2.6Ghz or just live with 2.5Ghz. My first X2 3800+ only did 2.5Ghz with 1.55V.

There is no big difference between 2.5Ghz and 2.6Ghz. I'll stay with my X2 3800+ at 2.5Ghz, because at this time there is no money for the new one(even if I sell my old one). Overall, I expected better OC results with my X2 3800+... Thank you everyone for the help.

And here i thought my 4200+ OCed like crap but i am running lower voltage (MBM says 1.36) then most of you guys have soo hmmm... i gotta find out how much higher it'll go with winter coming and its temp dropping! :D
