Howdy Folks..I just put together a X2 3800+ and a MSI Neo 4-f Board and My lowest temps are 42 C average. Is this Right???(I doubt it).Any thoughts or Suggestions would be great.I am currently using the Stock Heatsink/Fan with No overclock yet whatsover.the Case its in has 4 fans plus the Power supply fan, so Airflow hasnt been a problem before with my prior P4.I am using the Artic Silver 5 as well...so Im lost of course. Thanks in Advance..........

That's a little high for a idle temp. Mine runs 40C under load.

42C idle isn't bad at all. Well within limits. If you are getting 55C+ under load with your stock HSF, then personally, I would invest in another HSF. But I think you are good to go as you are.

Thx for the Replies.....I went ahead and Ordered a Thermaltake Big Typhoon for it.Of course...I may regret it.But..we will see.The high temps scare me.It went to 59 C yesterday....Had to shut it down..it locked up.will check back and let you know how the Thermaltake worked.I wonder if its the MSI Neo 4F board I have???

Did you completly remove the stock thermal pad before applying the AS5? My X2 3800+ idles at 26C and after a night of FEAR it was only up to 30-31C, ofcourse this is with a XP-90 and highflow panflow.

Yup..I removed the Thermal pad and put on the AS5.Didnrthelp..makes no sense really.

I just ordered my 3800 x2 today. Should I replace the thermal paste that comes with it with AS5 instead?
What is the best method of burning in the CPU? (I have my doubt weather this actually does anything or not, but I got good temp monitor on my system, a NTC micro thermistor going straight through the pins underneath the chip on my 3500, yeah Poylimide coating that's how I don't short it)

It's always a good idea to replace the stock TIM with any kind of paste, it need not be AS. I consider all those aftermarket pastes to be voodoo.

Speaking of OCing voodoo, I feel the same way about Burn-in. The only way you are going to get a better OC over time is to learn the particulars of the system you are working with and finding a new setting that helps you out.

The stock boxed CPU heatsink doesn't suck all that badly for me. Right now I'm getting temps of ~34°C with a few background apps running. But I can tell you that it's neither the most efficient nor the quietest cooling solution for an X2 3800+ CPU, due to it being based on the classic boxed P4 CPU heatsink without actually being exactly the same as the stock Intel heatsink.

And even though the stock X2 heatsink is slightly noisier than I would have liked (given its cooling capability), at least it's nowhere near as noisy or as loud as the heatsink which came with a boxed Palomino-core AthlonXP 2000+. (And that stock Palomino AXP 2000+ heatsink had to spin its stock fan at just under 6000 RPM, creating a loud racket of nearly 60 dBA, just to get the CPU's temps close to 50°C even at idle!)

I built a x2 system at work, and I thought the stock hs/f was quite nice. It seems to be pretty good quality, and it keeps my x2 around 44c load. It idles around 30.

edit: I was just told in another thread that the x2 3800 hsf isn't the same as the x2 4400 that I have. The 4400 hsf is awesome, high quality, heat pipes, etc......

My X2 3800+ ran at ~40 degress at idle and up to 52 degrees under load with the stock heatsink. I haven't seen it break 40 under load yet with my new Zalman CNPS 9500 LED and it usually idles at around 32 degrees now.

I replaced the stock TIM with some generic white thermal paste that came with some of my Alpha heatsinks. But beware, THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY

Anyhow, my temps look like this with the stock HSF:
Code:
                 2000mhz 2400mhz

Idle 34c 33c

Load 45c 53c

Ambient 21c 20c

These temps are achived with the case side open and one case fan blowing from the front of the case to the back of the case across the top of the GFX card. The fan does slightly help to get some fresh air to the CPU. And I get a little nevous at the temps I get when the case is closed. Besides that, the CPU fan never runs higher than minium speed, with the case open. So the noise stays down that way. So I just open up the case if I'm going to do some gaming.

blow hole. cut one. install a fan. never open your case for cooling again :p

X2 3800+ at 2.60ghz (10x260)

Idle, 30C
Dual prime, 50C

HSF: Zalman 7700alcu with AS5, at max fanspeed.

Wouldnt temps be reported differently with different mobos? Maybe its because i just installed my x2, but it hit 50c sustained while priming at 2.5ghz. It idles around 31-36c on water.

X2 3800+ oc 2.4ghz at 37°C idle and 49°C under full load with dual prime95

Okay Guys.....I think I may(!) have a better lead on the temps.I have a MSI K8N Neo4-F board and Now it is Hanging up at the Platinum Spash screen.Even After the Install of the Big Typhoon cooler it still was a little higher than I liked. It was still at 36C Idle and 52C Load. After numerous attempts the last few days I am about to give up on the Board and RMA it anyway. No matter how many times I remove and Reinstall evrything(Memory,CPU,Video card,ETC...)and reset the CMOS..it no longer will boot into Windows Xp for me.It did it a few times at first but now.....no more.I think that maybe this Board may have some other issues, maybe sensor or other things.I have a High Quality pile of parts here at this point.Any Ideas?/Suggestions??Help? maybe even a Spare Hammer?? Im lost.........thanks In Advance ....Kyle Pierce

Latest news Guys. After all the crap luck I had with this board it started Booting up fine after removing all USB again and resetting BIOS.Then..it worked great for about a week (With afew few weird problems). Then it wouldnt report coreect clock speeds in Bios or Maintain some settings. Also the Chipset fan shut down one day and it was showing a Sytem Temp of 252 C !!!!!!! Holy poop on a Stick Chillrens !!SO...this got me fed up finally and I mailed it to MSI and am waiting Patiently(Yeah Right !!!!) for it to return.I mailed it on the 28th.So Hopefully I will get it back in acouple weeks more at most.Cya folks........

I just got my X2 4400+ from Monarch with the heatpipe cooler. It *idles* at 42 and hits 60+ under Prime95. However, I wonder how accurate the sensor is... I've seen the temps drop 15-18C in less than 3 seconds after shutting Prime down. Seems like it would take longer for things to cool off.

Load temps tend to increase just as fast.
I've watched speefan and within 5 seconds of starting prime I've watched CPU temps jump 10C......

You have to reemmber that if the temp on die drops 15-18c in a few seconds the HSF will likely take a little longer so yeah I'd say it's reasonable.....though your chip sounds like it's running on the warm/hot side.

Well, I popped off the fan/heatsink and found:

*Way too much thermal compound (any time it oozes over the side of the CPU--even a little--it's too much.

*Heatsink retaining bracket not tight.

Correcting those two things dropped my load temps to 55C. Still not great, but better than 60+. Idle temps stayed about the same.

Maybe it's time for a real cooler...
