Just ordered a spring bundle as a spare with 2 games for 250, whats the difference between the E and S models besides the cases ?
Do you speak from personal experience? I thought that turned out to be bollocks. Doesn't it use exactly the same heatsink and fan as the S? As far as I can tell it does. There's no die shrink to elicit lower fan speeds, so what does that leave - more efficient airflow (ie. less recirculation) or something?
Loading faster, that's interesting. That's loading from hard drive presumably?
What are the specs of the unit's you're using - ie:
- Size of HDD?
- Factory installed drive, or 4GB units with drives added?
- 'Genuine' MS HDDs (pre-cased), or bare drives purchased separately and flashed?
- If bare drives, which models?
I'm wondering if the E models just have newer, faster hard drives? Also, the difference in noise levels - could this be attributed to the hard drive do you think?
Is there any over zealous head parking stupidity in the WD3200BEKT? Did you have to use WDIDLE, or would the custom firmware modify this anyway?
Actually I was just about to ask you about USB flash drives. People seem to be speeding up GTA5's streaming performance by putting half the game on the HDD and half on a flash drive. not sure if this tactic is applicable to any other games.
I also wonder about the 4GB of solid state memory in the console (assuming one purchased that model). How does that perform compared to the HDD? Part of my brain wants to imagine that there might be benefits to installing games to the HDD but saves on the internal flash, so that the game might use them in parallel (I'm only thinking of games like Skyrim with large save files).
Do you know whether they ever fully fixed the streaming issues with low quality textures in Skyrim when the game was installed on the hard drive. I know it's "fixed" according to a 2011 patch changelog, but I've seen people still complaining about it in 2012, and I'm pretty sure I saw it happen myself on my brother's 360 since then.

Here's the problem: I've had plenty of time with a 360-S and the optical drive in my experience was anything but quiet. But I think a lot of this comes down to variation in manufacturing, and the balance of the disk itself (although every disk I tried was loud). I think the same applies to fan noise too - it's massively variable in Intel stock coolers for example, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was just as variable in things like the 360.
Another reason why I'm paranoid about having heavy optical disk access is because in every single Xbox (1) I owned (4 units), the optical drive was the first point of failure. In fact, PC optical drives in general don't last 5 minutes these days, and I doubt the one in the 360 is a particularly high quality unit.
Do you guys have your consoles sitting horizontal or upright?
Always horizontal
That video is a 360s and that one doesn't sound right. If your 360 E sounds like that then it's messed up.I purchased a 360-E. It's anything but quiet. Sounds exactly like this:

Do I start the RMA game? I know that I'll end up paying 1/3 of the console's worth in shipping before I get a quiet one (if I ever do get one). Like all other low end hardware it's only by the grace of God that the slave labour factory manages to produce a bearing that isn't partially shagged.
Fuck my luck.
