360 Slim Availability

Yes it will work with a slim. Slim production has ended, but they are still available at many retailers.

Those component cables will work with the 360s BUT not the new 360 E. Plenty places still have the S model.

Just ordered a spring bundle as a spare with 2 games for 250, whats the difference between the E and S models besides the cases ?

They are very similar but the E has HDMI and a proprietary head phone like connector that is for the composite cable, they cut one USB port and the optical audio.

It's for those that don't need old connectors. It is a bit quieter than the S model.

It also has no touch sensitive buttons on it which I prefer since dusting would always turn the S on.

The power adapter is different as well the plug in is like a laptop and the brick is lower power than the one on my S model

Here is the back

the button is no big deal, generally turn my on with the controller, have never used a usb device with a 360., seems minor but cost cutting changes

Do you speak from personal experience? I thought that turned out to be bollocks. Doesn't it use exactly the same heatsink and fan as the S? As far as I can tell it does. There's no die shrink to elicit lower fan speeds, so what does that leave - more efficient airflow (ie. less recirculation) or something?

I have both what I said is accurate.
It's quieter
Loads a bit faster
Power brick has slightly lower output ratings on it

In fact I let my son use the E because he plays skyrim a lot and it loads faster on that one.

Bought my S in February and the E in late July to replace my older units.

Loading faster, that's interesting. That's loading from hard drive presumably?

What are the specs of the unit's you're using - ie:

- Size of HDD?
- Factory installed drive, or 4GB units with drives added?
- 'Genuine' MS HDDs (pre-cased), or bare drives purchased separately and flashed?
- If bare drives, which models?

I'm wondering if the E models just have newer, faster hard drives? Also, the difference in noise levels - could this be attributed to the hard drive do you think?

Both are 4gb units with 320gb WD3200BEKT flashed by me. loading from DVD is faster on the E as is installing AND loading the game once installed ( I install all games to HD)

I refuse to buy the genuine drive when flashing your own is super easy.

The black I choose based on past luck with reliability and I only buy 7200 rpm drives.

Going from the standard official 250 drive in the S that I had from my sons reach edition S to the black 320 , the larger cache and higher rpm seems to help a lot with loading and install just like when you do the same with the PS3 which I did as well.

Heat is no issue from what I've seen no part of the S or E model run hot. Their top cooling solution works very well in these models.

Is there any over zealous head parking stupidity in the WD3200BEKT? Did you have to use WDIDLE, or would the custom firmware modify this anyway?

Those are honestly question I don't have answers to. I have not noticed any parking or weird performance issues. You can only use certain WD drives to make your own.

Pay no attention to his warning about the dashboard detecting or any banning that is all false. You are not modifying the console and are not violating any tos.

Best speed tip also for the 360 don't use flash drives if you don't need to my son used to keep dlc and stuff on a 32gb flash drive the system really slow when reading from both a HD and flashdrive. Besides it is allot of read writes for a flash drive. I only use them for backups like changing drives. With live and cloud storage they really aren't needed anymore.

Actually I was just about to ask you about USB flash drives. People seem to be speeding up GTA5's streaming performance by putting half the game on the HDD and half on a flash drive. not sure if this tactic is applicable to any other games.

I also wonder about the 4GB of solid state memory in the console (assuming one purchased that model). How does that perform compared to the HDD? Part of my brain wants to imagine that there might be benefits to installing games to the HDD but saves on the internal flash, so that the game might use them in parallel (I'm only thinking of games like Skyrim with large save files).

I don't use the internal flash at all.
That GTA V trick is stupid just install the install disk and play the game. Other games don't have that issue, forza 4 doesn't have that issue and it has a play disk and a install disk. People have been doing that with GTA V to not have the disk drive spinning with the play disk.

Flash drives are limited by USB 2.0 the hard drive is faster.

I use cloud for all my saves since I bounce between consoles.

I'm pretty sure that gtaV issue can be fixed with a patch.

And a disk spinning in the S or E model isn't loud it's still quiet

Do you know whether they ever fully fixed the streaming issues with low quality textures in Skyrim when the game was installed on the hard drive. I know it's "fixed" according to a 2011 patch changelog, but I've seen people still complaining about it in 2012, and I'm pretty sure I saw it happen myself on my brother's 360 since then.

I'll have to ask my son I don't play skyrim. He never complained about anything and he has the legendary version.

Here's the problem: I've had plenty of time with a 360-S and the optical drive in my experience was anything but quiet. But I think a lot of this comes down to variation in manufacturing, and the balance of the disk itself (although every disk I tried was loud). I think the same applies to fan noise too - it's massively variable in Intel stock coolers for example, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was just as variable in things like the 360.

Another reason why I'm paranoid about having heavy optical disk access is because in every single Xbox (1) I owned (4 units), the optical drive was the first point of failure. In fact, PC optical drives in general don't last 5 minutes these days, and I doubt the one in the 360 is a particularly high quality unit.

The S model is louder than the E but I wouldn't call the S loud it's still quieter than my slim ps3.
The E model is super quiet compared to both.

that's odd neither my ps3 slim or my 360 s are noisy I can't really hear them at all.

been lucky never had an opticaol drivego bad in a pc or aconsole or a dvd or bluray player, but then again I don't have 10 hour play sessions either.

pright I have a Halo Recah version looks great upright cant see the designs if its horizontal, same with my PS3 they were designed to be used either way. just don't change the orientation on the 360 while the drive is spinning to avoid scratched disks.

I put a 250 GB drive in a 4gb version didn't see any difference at least not a noticeable one,, not sure if it even uses the 4GB if you put a drive in.

I purchased a 360-E. It's anything but quiet. Sounds exactly like this:

Do I start the RMA game? I know that I'll end up paying 1/3 of the console's worth in shipping before I get a quiet one (if I ever do get one). Like all other low end hardware it's only by the grace of God that the slave labour factory manages to produce a bearing that isn't partially shagged.

Fuck my luck.
That video is a 360s and that one doesn't sound right. If your 360 E sounds like that then it's messed up.

Microsoft doesn't charge you anything for in warranty repairs that includes shipping

Honestly that sounds normal.

Also if you get a replacement fan avoid anything called Whisper Max, more like Louder than stock to the Max.
