3440x1440 GPU Upgrade Question

I just bought up a LG 34UM95 3440x1440 21:9 monitor and it should be here next week. After seeing the amazing reviews surfacing online, it just seemed like the perfect screen for me.

As you can see from my signature, it's time for a GPU upgrade. I mostly play LoL currently and I may even be able to get away with it at this resolution, but I'm looking at options. I think the rest of my rig should be OK.

Can I get away with a 770 at this resolution? It seems like it would be a shame to buy a 780 (or 780 ti) right now when new cards are just around the corner.

Thoughts would be great. Been out of the GPU loop since 2012.

LoL is not that demanding of a game. Unless they bring back URF mode, god that mode made all GPUs cry.

I have a 2560x1440 monitor and my gtx 770 is not able to handle most games at full eye candy. I am getting a 780 as soon as I can.

If you're going to play anything more graphically intensive than LoL, I would recommend at least a 780 or 290.

If buying now I would suggest either a 290x or a 780Ti. Those are the two I would consider for this monitor at this point in time.

the game is just horribly optimized. both my 770 and 2500k @ 4.5 GHz sit at <35% usage no matter what, and yet my framerate will drop into the 80s when a lot of shit is going on, and if i set effects to anything higher than medium my fps will drop into the 60s. horrendous.

anonuser if all you play is lol then you don't need anything more than a 770. i tried 4x4 SSAA in league a week ago at 1080p (that'd be 7680x4320 or 8K ;)) and my framerate never even dropped below 60. i would say a 770 would be just fine for you, hell i'd say you don't even need to upgrade, but if you need a bit of extra performance for more demanding games you should try going up a tier to either a 290/290X or 780/780 Ti. and please don't waste your money on a 4 GB card. just don't. please.

Nothing against the OP

There should be a sticky at the top of the forum for GPU recommendations and upgrades and it should read:

"Buy the most recent and fastest GPU(s) you can afford right now. Worry about the future when it arrives."

Lock thread.

Thank you. That's the advice I was looking for when I posted this. I have an xbox one (because my friends do) and I'll play most FPS on that just because it's more social for me. I'll see how league runs with my old 560ti and upgrade to a 770 if I need it.

you need to just look at benchmarks for games you care about and see what performs better

Haven't found benchmarks in this resolution.

The pixel count is 20% higher than a 2560x1600 monitor. I suggest looking at 2560x1600 benches as they are plentiful and just account for the difference. A single 780 will do for most games, but more demanding ones like Crysis 3 will require SLI/CF.

I'm on the hunt for a UM95 now myself. Today I ordered a Sapphire 290x Tri-x OC card to run it. I chose the 290x because at the upper end of the ultra resolutions it tends to do better than the 780/780Ti in gaming supposedly. And it has 4GB VRAM. Although its speculative just how much VRAM will benefit the games at high resolutions. Jury seems to be still out on that. Anyway I made a decision and went with it.

I'd love to know how this card would work out. I *could* spend the money for the 780 Ti, but I'd rather save a few hundred bucks if I don't need to.

Yeah, its pricey. 32 hours of overtime is paying for it though. Once I get my hands on a 34UM95 monitor I can post some pics and stats. I'm expecting good results.

The results I've seen peg the Sapphire 290x Tri-x OC at just below a 780 Ti in performance for ~$150 less. Seems like a pretty good deal.

It arrived today. Damn thing sure is big. 12 inches long. Tomorrow I'm going to shoehorn it into my LL V354. Should fit . My only real concern is heat but I wont try to OC it until I get a bigger case. LOL It sure is purtty. :D

I was just saying that a gtx 770 is no good for anything beyond 1080p. but if I was going to recommend a video card, I would recommend the 290x. (that might even be the one I am going to finally get)
