I have a 3800+ x2, 6800GS pcie, 1.5 gigs of memory, and a 300watt power supply +12V=19A. I'm playing CSS at 800x600 and only getting 60-80 fps on the stress test. Is my power supply limiting the potential of of gfx card?

Power supplies are unlikely to cause low FPS. However, it sounds like you probably have a junk PSU, probably not even ATX12v 2.0... So upgrade it either way.

Could be. I couldn't even hit 2.2 ghz while i had a 300w fsp. Then I upgraded to a powerstream, and i'm running it at 2.8 ghz.

i think its possible as well, im running a P.o.s 300w at the moment with a gig ram, x1600xt, x2 4200 and 3dmark does weird things,it will crash 50 % of the time, the other times i will score around 4500 and other times 5450. I also have much troble trying to boot my system, i beleive its an instability issue hurting gpu performance. I also bought a powerstream, should be here tommorow, let you know how i made out.

WTF are you guys doing with such Psu. I mean wow i just purchased a mercedes SLK but i didnt want to pay for useless stuff like tires so i have toyota tercel tires. Its strange but the car doesnt drive really good. Thats pretty much what you are asking.

ehhe sorry to be rude it is just that with all the problems people have on forums caused by cheap psu, it isnt worth it to save 50$ compared to the risk you take having a cheap psu + the hassle you can get trying to fix the problem you can have. Yes cheap PSU can do, For more then 6months, maybe, 1year, i dont know, 2 years, pretty sure no, 3years: BOOM.

Normally you should get more FPS, First you have fps instability because you didnt fixed the affinity to only one core (ctrl+alt+del, hl2.exe right click).

Even if Psu is the cause of the bottleneck, im suggesting you to at least buy a good 430w or 450w Psu. youre sistem isnt drawing alot of Wattage but a cheap 300w psu means it can only output something like 280w, and youre system draw more then that

First off, how many sticks of memory do you have installed on your motherboard?

The reason why I'm asking this is because if you're using only three sticks of memory, not only will it be running in single-channel mode, but it will also be running at 166MHz/DDR333/PC2700 or even 100MHz/DDR200/PC1600.

And I agree with some of the others that excessive heat inside your PSU, not just the wattage or amperage, may cause the PSU to throttle down in power.

I was using 2 sticks of DDR400 then added another stick of 512mb of DDR333 since I was getting low fps to begin with. I am also using 4 harddrives :) I guess I'll get a Powerstream 520w :/

A powerstream 520 might not be the best thing for 140. Look into Seasonic or at least antec. A TPII 550 would probably do just as well for you I'm guessing.

Why are people here against the powerstream 520, many great reviews around the net, solid 12v rail.

You can get better for cheaper.

Either way, I love my powerstream ;)

There is one possibility where a PSU could cause lower performance. As I understand it, if a component (eg, a GPU) is having a hard time drawing current that it needs, everything upstream will heat up due to increased resistance, including most of the chip itself. Most GPUs have a speed-throttling feature which will cut back if the temp gets too high (I think mine's at 160 dec C). I have no idea if that's what's happening, but it might be worth exploring. It *would* surely affect a situation where overclocking is going on, where components are running right at their limits.

Just a reply to let you know my results. I got rid of my hp 300w and threw in a powerstream with much difficulty, however all my reboot issues, gpu issures are solved. I can now overclock like crazy. I learned my lesson.
