So far I've decided I want...

Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition 965 Nehalem 3.2GHz 4 x 256KB
SAPPHIRE 100251SR Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB 512-bit

what should i get for the motherboard and other peripherals?

holy crap. I wish I had that budget right now. Is a monitor part of that budget? I would get a Dell 3007WFP-HC. But that is for my selfish needs.:D

Please answer the questions listed in the sticky at the top of the page first.

The Extreme Edition is a total waste. Total. Get a 920 and OC to ~4Ghz /easily/. There's no reason at all to spend the $1500 Intel is asking for the 965.

You'll want a high end Thermalright or Noctua HSF to go with that.

I'd personally go with tri-SLI GTX 285s over the 4870X2 if I had a $3000 budget.

That, and the EVGA X58 SLI board.

Get some DDR3-1600 or faster (6GB, 3x2GB).

HT Omega Clario Halo or Azuntech X-Fi for sound.

2x Western Digital 6400AALS 7200RPM 640GB SATA HDDs, put them in RAID 0

Samsung / LG / LiteOn / ASUS 22x SATA DVDRW

Lian Li V1200B or similar case.

Razer Lachesis mouse, Razer Lycosa keyboard, Ratpadz XT mousepad.

Swan M12 speakers, or Logitech Z5500s if you want surround sound.

That'll put you somewhere around $2500.

Prepare to be hounded by "Why the hell are you choosing the 965 over the 920" posts. In any case good luck with your build.

Rough estimates on the price:

i7 920 - $300
TRUE 120 Extreme w/ Fan - $80
EVGA X58 - $300
Corsair 3x2GB 1600 - $230
EVGA GTX 285 SLI ~ $700 (possible to save w/ rebates)
Corsair HX1000 ~ $270 ("" "")
Western Digital 6400AALS x2 - $160
LG Blu-Ray RW - $200
Vista Ultimate X64 - $150 (in our own FS forums, or around $180-210 retail)

= $2390

Add up taxes, shipping probably around $2500 or more/less depending on where you get it from. I'd bump the HDD to a 1TB WD but thats personal preference, RAID is probably smarter. If you want to spend the remaining dollars go ahead and spice it up, upgrade to the useless i7 940 if you want, get the TRUE 120 Copper, Corsair 1866, maybe another GTX 285 or switch it up if you're an ATI 4870x2 fan, but it's pretty much all good from here. Also dont forget to choose a case, that's more up to you but any high quality Antec, Lian-Li, etc. full tower case will serve you right. Lian-Li PC-P80 is pretty much the god.

EVGA X58 SLI board.

this motherboard looks good.. Should I max it out with 12gb of ddr3 or will I have stability issues?

I've -read- of people having stability/posting issues, can't speak from personal preference.

Why even go that way though? I know you got the money for it but geez there's a point where it doesn't even matter any more and in this case even causes issues at times going for the best of the best. Like the i7 965, you get it and your budget is probably maxed out or exceeded once shipping and taxes take place, and you can get identical performance as the i7 920 if you're not water cooling.

Oh and don't bother with the 940. Total waste of money.
