30% off cupon "hack"

Kirika said:
i thought the coupons said only 1 per household, or can you use multiple coupons on multiple things? the 750 gig hd for $280 sounds really good.
Solution: pay with cash on multiple receipts.

Well, I found a 30% off coupon, but the guy in the computer area, and the store manager would not let me use it for the Westinghouse 22" LCD. First they said a monitor is not an accessory (yeh right..), than he said it does not apply to sale prices.

The other two stores in my area are out of stock, so I can't even try slipping it by at the register.

Any other tips or tricks for getting this through?

Rob

OKC best buy has NO 30% off coupons... i spent about an hour there looking around the store. They must have pulled them all.

yeah i need one to. anyone willing to send me one in the mail?
Sure, for $10 it's yours :)

If not, I think this sounds like a GREAT idea:

I am going to straight-up say they are bullshitting you. There is no way that their at-cost price, Best Buy of all places would mark up their prices much more than that.

I will be pissed off if they don't give me the 30% off. I think I could probably make a big enough deal out of it for them to give it to me anyways. I will try to get you a reciept when I go later today.

I don't know what the markup is on monitors, but on TV's, Normal B&M Selling Price (which may be less than MSRP) = Cost/0.70 (audio is cost/.6 speakers are just marked up 100%).

I can't find this monitor anywhere but BB, but if this monitor sells for this price at least once a month, then monitors could fall into that formula (assumes they'll price match for 30 days).

Frankly, if the cost is less than that, then the mark up on monitors is outrageously high compared to TVs (and 42% markup isn't exactly low margin).

Back to the issue of the Westinghouse 22" LCD, at least for me they would not even give me $0.01 off because "Monitors are not computer accessories, they count as computers. Therefore, the discount does not apply." They pulled the same shit with the printer I tried to buy.

Fucking pricks. I will never go there again.

I tried again at the same BB tonight thinking maybe a different manager may let it fly, but no luck. I even sent my wife in to do the dirty work, and try her female charm with the male employees.....no luck. She got the guy to try and ring the 30% off coupon up, but it would not work. When he called the manager over, he said it was because it is already on sale.

So much for the Westy. Grabbing that for about $300 out the door would have been sweet, but I don't know if I would throw down 400+ for it.

Rob

Exactly. The price with the coupon is great, but there is no way in hell I am paying $400 for that thing.

Tried this last night at the Joplin, MO BB. Found four of the 30% coupons in the first box I looked in. Picked up a 74gb raptor and then tried to get the Westinghouse 22". I was told that neither item was covered by the coupon, I could only use it for cables/mice/keyboards/paper/etc. Talk about being utterly useless.

I would argue that point with them and point out that they don't know what a computer accessory is. See, the other coupon in the booklet, for 20%, specificlly mentions "keyboards and mice".

They just ignore that statement and say that an LCD counts as a computer, as do all computer components. Stupid pricks.

you just need to find the most airheaded looking one. helps if they are female and you toss tech speach at them.

I take offense to that. I work at Best Buy, and I'm female. Also, I'm the only female in the computer department.

I looked on their website last night, and that's all they have under accessories. What pisses me off is I tried to use it on Verbatim DL DVDs a week or 2 back, and they refused to honor it, and those are CLEARLY accessories.

as the website says BestBuySucks

I'm sure he didn't intend to be offensive. What he really meant was "All Best Buy employees are equally incompetant."

For those interested, I found several of these at the Austin TX store on Research blvd.

I then went back home to research the computer accessory products available via the website. I calculated the final price of each product by knocking off the 30% and including tax. I'd hoped that there would be at least a few sweet deals to be had. Sadly, in the end, the 30% off coupon doesn't really even hit the lowest price that can be found via the net for any of the items.

So to be perfectly blunt about it, the only real gains to be had here are the convenience of picking up or returning a product locally.

I'm sure that other things such as office furniture can be found for equally low prices as well, though you're likely to get killed with shipping charges.

I've several of these coupons that I'm going to give to my bosses. I figure a little good PR is never a bad thing :p

they got the seagate 320gb sata 3gb 16mb cache hd on sale for $99 at the local store by me since its on sale right now, I saw the stack of back to school flyers, i got a few of teh 15percent off ones, maybe I can search thru for the 30percent off in the same stack? I wonder if this would work on that hard drive, since its just under $100 on sale but regular its over 100..

Just got back from BB, where I was able to get the Theater 650 tv card for $98.50 out-the-door, using the 30% off coupon. It took a manager override, and I was lucky enough to get one who labeled the 650 as a computer "accessory". Now, if I can just the cable company to get out here to install a wall jack, I'll be in business. :)

ok... maybe I could consider a printer a "computer" since some of them can do things without being hooked up to a computer, like scan and copy, and they have to have some sort of CPU to do that task, but come on... a monitor will not do a damn thing on its own besides hold down a peice of paper. It is dependant on a computer to function... i wont go to dictionary.com to get the definition but I do believe it would say something along the lines calling a monitor an accessory....

we all know its a peripheral, but really.... isnt that just a fancy nomenclature for accessory?

Yes, it is. I am considering going back with my bitchy aunt and making a scene out of it. If we don't get it, at least I get to see my aunt yell at people, that is always funny :D

Take a look at the content at the website for items under "Computer Accessories"

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=cat08001&type=category

Those are the things that qualify as an "accessory" as it pertains to best buy terminology.

well if we are going to talk about the website, how about bringin up the point that any time i've ever tried to get bestbuy to match an instore price with the price on there website, they said they wouldnt at all, because they are 2 seperate companies. i've had that told to me at 3 different stores.

its bullshit when bestbuy wont price match there own site, but circuit city will price match best buys site....

Can't you buy something online and pick it up in the store? I remember doing that in the past.

Yes, you definitely can. There is absolutely no way that the companies are seperate or why they wouldn't pricematch their own website. The OP must have either found some employee who is extra incompetant, or just a big flaming ass hole. This is why I try to buy as much as I can online. You eliminate the 'worthless incompetant human' factor.

Which brings us back to the price of the 22" monitor. If you look online, it's been $399 for over a month (that's how far back the pricefollower graph goes), so it's definitely not on sale at BB when they lower the price to 399. That's the normal price. Any other price they offer is just to make the 399 look better.

Alas, it's not an accessory.

I found two 30% coupons and used them at the same BB store on different days.

Scored on Gateway FPD2185W and BFG 7900GT!!!

I think having reward zone membership helps. Both times the cashier asked if I have one when scanning coupon turned out $0 discount. When I handed my rz card, they manually applied the 30% discount.

This is true, and a very good point. This has been a pretty half-assed policy for as long as I can remember.

Heh, you too, huh? I even went back and got the FPD1975W for my girlfriend. Then I got that 320GB SATA for $76 after tax. I thought about getting the Saitek X52 flight stick.

The BB in Alpharetta, GA (Northpoint mall store) has the 30% off coupons. Found a stack on the 'wall' display at the end of the computer accessories area. There were at least 8-10 of the 30%ers in there. I took 3.

Was able to use one on a Seagate SATA 750GB Drive, total came to 279.99. Just awesome. Thanks OP!!

BTW Here's how it went down. Found the stack of the coupons on a shelf, went through it (nobody gave me a second look) and snagged 3 of the 30% guys. Went over to the HDD area and asked a wandering employee if they were 'computer accessories'. He said "yes" without giving it a second thought. So far so good. So I head up to the checkout and picked the one who looked like she didn't want to be there. Happily several people got in line behind me so there was some time pressure. I give her the coupon and ask if it will work with the HDD, she says 'I guess so'. It rings up as $0.00 off but an override screen pops up. She calles the manager over, he signs in and OKs it like it was no big deal. I had to fill out a form for some reason, but no biggie. Total with 7% tax comes to $299.59. No problem at all!

Later I went back in and got the LOST-SEASON 1 DVD set using the 20% off coupon from the same booklet, also a nice deal. 49.99 less 20% off makes it 39.99. This one rang right up, no override needed. WooHoo!

did those of you using multiple coupons pay by credit card or cash the coupons does say only one per person I think. Would be nice to score a big hd for storing stuff.

I think you give their tracking abilities far too much credit. Even if they had the ability to associate your credit card with a coupon, I would be more than highly amazed if someone actually took the time to follow up on it. Besides, what are they really going to do after you've left the store with the product? If I leave the store and they try to change more after I leave, I call my credit card company and dispute the charge. I still get the product and BB gets $0.

This used to be the case, but is not anymore. When I worked there, I price matched online prices quite often. It might be a per store/get a cool sales guy like me thing though.

By the way, when I was working there and we got those coupons in, I couldnt even find a freaking 30% one. I didn't believe tehy existed until a co-worked said they did, and he had seen one. :D

went to bb this afternoon, they said the deal ended friday :( Hopefully that one's just fulla crap and i can snag one from a different one tomorrow.

I believe it said earlier in this thread that they expired 9/7. I do not actually have a coupon in my posession, so I can not verify this for sure. I'm sure it says on the coupon, so if you show it to a salesperson and they still reject it, I would throw a fit.

Went to Best Buy today and asked for a Back to School Coupon Book. I was told they didn't have any. I was going to buy a Westinghouse 22" anyways so I went to the display section and found the book laying there. It was only a 15% off one. But I took it up and tried to use it. I was denied on 2 parts. 1) A monitor is not an accessory and 2) The coupon cannot be used on sale items. So, I told them that was too bad as I was going to use the money I saved on a 3 year protection plan. The guy thought about it and said he'd give me the 10% off on it if I bought a plan. So I got the LCD and a protection plan for $400. Not bad at all I'd say. This is a VERY nice display!
