I'd like to have a 3, 4 or 5U chassis with a bunch of pass thru JBOD disks for swapping out my volumes. I'm looking for ideas on how to put 3.5" SATA drives into some caddy that's not much bigger than a 3.5" but will protect the data, power, and PCB of drives when removed and uses as little real estate as possible in the chassis to pack the disks in. The most I've seen is 12 x 5.25" in 4U which looks like it'll only fit a single disk into each 5.25" bay.

Is there anything you've seen like this to fit more disks?
 
If you want to go cheaper and get just a case with trays/backplanes (you add the PS, and a few more fans), go with a Norco. If you want to spend a bit more and get a enterprise-grade box with redundant power/cooling go with a SuperMicro.
 
Don't both of those expose the drives connecters when they are out of the chassis? I'm hoping to find a solution that fully encases the 3.5" drive inside. That way there is less chance of banging the drives real connector and making the data inaccessible.

The only systems I have seen like that take a full 5.25" bay for each drive like this, so unless you pick up a huge case with tons of 5.25" slots, you are not going to be able to do what you want. It will also add a LOT of $$$ to your build with ~20 of these in addition to all your other build costs. In any case, of the 1,000's of drive I deal with I have never broken a SATA port. Even in the worst case, if you did break the port you could always replace the port (or the PCB) and get at your data. If the absolute worst happened and the drive was toast, that is why you have backups, right?
