I'm building a new computers, I'm trying to get 32 GB rams , but should I go for 4 x 8 or 2 x 16 ? the price difference is like $20 ..

Spec Intel i7 6700k Asus Maximus VIII Hero.

always get the largest DIMMS. This way you can always upgrade to again if needed and they are easier to resell. Try selling 4GB DIMMs today.... 8GB DIMMs still sell well. 4 GB DIMMs....ha
See this post. 3 sets of decent RAM ion my opinon. Not saying they are the best...but they are solid.
its comparable in CAS but not the other latency. If it was 10-10-10 vs 10-12-12 yes.

The other latency is in the 10ns range so its on the boarder in my opinon

either save a few bucks and get this
$90
HyperX Savage 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400 (PC4 19200) Desktop Memory Model HX424C12SB2K2/16 - Newegg.com

or spend a little more and get this. its entirely up to you. I doubt there is anything major in terms of games for your use. For me I would go with the 120 option but i am picky
$105
DDR4 3000, 14, 16GB (2 x 8GB), Desktop Memory, Memory, Components - Newegg.com
$120
DDR4 3200, 14, 16GB (2 x 8GB), Desktop Memory, Memory, Components - Newegg.com

They also have 16GB stick versions.

Go for 2x16GB sticks. That way you can expand to 4*16GB sticks one day in the future. While I don't think that we'll need 64GB of memory anytime soon.... it'd be nice to have that option, especially if you start to go more heavily into VMs or 3D rendering or HD video rendering

yea i got my RX100 IV and it does 4K 30P and 1080 120P 100M so i got to figure out what i want to do with that :D

The fewest amount of DIMMS is always better. More room for expandability and you take a performance hit every time you split channels.

For $20, get the bigger DIMMs unless your system can do quad channel operation (it can't).

With one of the systems I just built I could get 8gB registered ECC DIMMs for $16, and 16gB registered ECC DIMMs were $80. Since I need 4 for quad channel operation and the huge price delta, and the fact I don't need 64gB of RAM I went with the 8's. Maybe later if I need more RAM when 16gB registered ECC DIMMs are cheap I will get four of them and replace the 8's.

I'm in concurrence with the rest of the guys.. ...bigger sticks.

More sticks also improves the odds(in a bad way) of instability due to failure.

Benefits of 2x16gb is open slots for future growth, less signal attenuation of the memory channel, and the things the gentlemen(ladies?) above mentioned.

Hi guys just asking advice also just joined but have been reading and visiting this forum for well over 10 years!

My main computer is gonna be slightly upgraded but since this is about ram I currently have 4x4gb sticks or sniper series ram do not recall current speeds but I have a micro board and am only using 2x4gb sticks atm. Assuming I am not upgrading my cpu and motherboard 3770k which is fine! I just realized I had 2 sticks laying around doing nothing.

So assuming I can sell my 4 sticks I wanna upgrade my ddr3 system to best 2 sticks I can use any opinions thanks! I do not currently overclock but maybe in the future I will to prolong my setup. My video card is a 670ftw which I will likely sell soon due to selling some other parts available right now and the upgrade will be smooth and free really eyeballing the 1060 or perhaps going to amd although in general I never have used one evga for years. Any and all advice welcome! Hope I didn't break any rules first post and all! Need 100 to start selling I think lol :(....

here is a few options
depends how much you want to spend and if you think ~5% increase in cpu performance is worth a $50 premium
Team Dark 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200) Desktop Memory Model TDRED316G2400HC11CDC01 11-13-13-35 $47.99
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) Desktop Memory Model F3-2133C9D-16GXH 9-11-11 $76.99
G.SKILL TridentX Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200) Desktop Memory Model F3-2400C10D-16GTX 10-12-12-31 $84.99
CORSAIR Vengeance Pro 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) Desktop Memory Model CMY8GX3M2A2133C8R 8-10-10-27 $99

performance index as a rough guide to the rams performance
1600\11=145
1333\9=148
1600\9=177
2400\11=218
2133\9=237
2400\10=240
2133\8=266

Thanks took a while to understand it :) yea I will only spend $10 more for slightly better ram will I see much if any performance difference going from my 2x4gb 1866 snipers to 2x8gb we talking all milliseconds right hah I just wanna double my ram for all future purposes until I upgrade change mobo cpu!

Found these just for comparison
G.SKILL 16GB PC3-17000 DDR3 Desktop RAM Kit $56

Comparing points the team dark ones you listed are better technically right even though it's very close I do tend to buy great brands with ram just in case warranty issues ever arise and I just don't know team dark but 2400/11 better then 2133/10 even if we talking invisible benchmarks hah

1866c9 will perform very close to 2133c10\2400c11
going to 16g wont help unless your using over 8g which will make things a stuttering mess as you wait on the hdd

to give you an idea of the gains you can see from overclocking cpu\ram take a look here

if your looking to oc what mb do you have? im guessing its itx if you only have two ram slots? as any half decent overclockable matx mb should have four

Ok thanks and for the most part I agree guess in the end just buy something on sale or matches mobo lol :)

i personally would never get less than 16GB of RAM at this point. You are asking for trouble. Chrome can use 8+GB at times. Also some games uses well over 4GB of RAM so you will have to close EVERYTHING to run a game...kinda dumb.

Puffy
Adding to what others have said, more DIMMs will stress the IMC a bit more so will raise CPU temps.

Sirste
I think 2x8GB 1866 CL9 is the sweet spot for performance/value.
I've used almost every Crucial Ballistix line of the DDR3 gen, and these are my picks: Crucial Ballistix Tactical 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Gaming Memory Model BLT2KIT8G3D1869DT1TX0 - Newegg.com
Ok thanks just reviewing many benchmarks on the matter and it really seems that in the end besides form microscopic benchmark milliseconds it doesn't even matter and maybe just pick 2x8gb whichever sticks match the mobo the best along with a top tier company :) but thanks for your advice I'll check those sticks out
