I have just purchased a BFG Tech 6800 OC from newegg.com (has not arrived yet), but as soon as I bought it I found people saying that the 6800 has BAD 2D image quality, esspecially after 1024x768. I was doing some more reading and some people seem to think that it might be as simple as an image sharpness setting in the driver located under the "Color Correction" menu. So what I did was I went on to my brother's computer ( Geforce 4 TI4200 / 61.77) and looked at the Color Correction menu, and to my dismay, there was no option for image sharpness. Could someone with a 6800 series card please post me a screenshot of their "Color Correction" menu, and also feel free to tell me about what you guys think of the 6800 series and 2d image qaulity.

6800 2D quality is great.

Old nvidia 2D problems were with bad RF output filters (fuzziness at > 1024x768) and affected *some, not all* pre-Ti4200 cards.

You might be thinking of Clear type...maybe?

No, it's not cleartype, I've just been reading many reports of blurry text with 6800 cards, but I think it might be isolated to just a few cards.

yes there is an image sharpening setting on the color correction menu. I played with it and it just makes everything look like crap. My 2D quality on just the default setting looks great. I don't think you have to worry about it.

However, I'm using DVI on mine so I guess it could be different with the analog output of the card?

That's odd, 2D quality on my 6800GT seems better than my 9700p.

Colour Correction tab for 66.81 drivers, 61.77 might have it too.

Maybe the 6800GT is fine and just the 6800 has bad image quality?

BTW, thanks for the screenshot PikachuMan :)

The 6800LE/6800/6800GT/6800U all use the exact same NV40 core. The only difference is speed and/or quad(s) that are disabled.

yeh but there are electronics between the core and the analog output. I have a BFG 6800GT and it looks excellent even at 1600x1200 & 100hz, but it is a first batch reference Nvidia design. Now that time has passed, it looks like manufacturers are starting to deviate from the reference and its quite possible some have supplemented lower quality components on the board.

since eVGA make reference boards AFAIK, they would probably be your best bet for 2D image quality.

so far, PNY's are reference all the way exept a support bar at the top of the card

My BFG 6800 suffers from fuzziness on the analog output. I fiddled with the sharpness control in nv control panel and did not find it to be helpful. The the DVI output quality on my card is very clear and sharp, so I think that my DAC's may not be performing up to par. Most owners don't seem to have a problem with their cards and BFG has offered to exchange mine, so I think that you will be pleased w/your purchase - it's a nice card.

Well, if you are using an LCD monitor the VGA output will look worse than the DVI output.

Yes, analog output will be slightly lower quality than DVI because of the additional processing stage(s) that tranCendenz described above. In my case, the analog output is much lower quality relative to the DVI (far worse than either of my other cards, 9600xt & 9800pro). That's why DAC's (+related filters?) are likely culprits in that case.

So if your LCD puts out a Analog signal originally, putting the DVI converter will do nothing? It has to be a DVI originated signal from the back of your monitor right?

Bah, not all boards are the same, ATi or Nvidia.

A reference board simply means that the PCB layout is the same, many companies will forego soldering on the 4 or 5 filters that are usually placed on a videocard to "smooth" out images. Sometimes there may only be two or three, or use cheap components.

I've seen entire OEM ATi boards with half of the soldered components missing (rage theatre, filters, capacitors, memory chips for SE models, etc...)

They can't go too cheap (no filters) because it has to pass emission standards, if its leaking UV instead of visible, its even a health hazard.

The GPU cores themselves can also be of inherently bad quality. The GF/2 lines were notorious for blurriness/wavyness at resolutions above 1024x768. If the digital signal the GPU sends to the ramdac is dirty, no amount of tweaking or filtering will improve the image.

When I had the GeForce 6800U, the 2D output wasn't that great. It was very apparent after using the X800XT. It could've been due to the DVI-Analog adapter I was using for my CRT. Looked fine on my LCD with DVI.

Yeah, that's correct, a DVI to VGA converter only makes it compatible, the same with a VGA to DVI converter. So using a VGA output and converting it to DVI will still make it look the same as VGA, all it does it make it compatible, the part the needs to be DVI is the part on the video card itself. A converter will not change the image quality coming off the card.

And because I've been thinking about getting dual LCDs I've been thinking about getting a Dual DVI video card, but there are none out there that I really like much, it's slim pickings with Dual DVI cards, which is kinda a problem that more manufacturers need to look into. Because using an LCD with VGA looks crappy.

i think xfx makes a dual dvi 6800 gt

Yeah, I saw that, but the highest I could go on the card I just got was 300 bucks, anything more wasn't in my budget, so I went with the BFG 6800 OC, seems like a lot of people like it, and even though it isn't a GT, it's still fast enough. Also, I probably won't have dual LCDs for a long time, and by that time, it will be time for another video card upgrade, so I feel that going with the 6800 OC was a good idea, don't you? :p

The BFG is a great card. XFX also makes a regular 6800 w/dual-DVI, available at Newegg for $276, in case you're looking for such a part.

As for using vga output to an lcd display, I have no complaints about the quality on any of my computers, with the sole exception of my BFG 6800 problem child which seems to be malfunctioning at the moment. My FX5200 (I know what you're thinking, but it's an office machine) 9600xt and 9800pro all have very sharp, clean output from vga to various NEC and Samsung lcd's. I think you have a decent dual-lcd option using the other (vga) output of the BFG if you want to try it.
