290x creating "Platform Bottleneck"

Your cpu is holding you back not your gpus.

Yea, too bad neither Intel or AMD can a CPU that maintains 120Hz @1080p with all the eye candy on. I wish both camps would shock us with a real upgrade in the future. I'm talking Battlefield 4 120Hz minimum with all goodies on.

All sites tested the 290x Titan and 780 with Crysis 3 in FXAA VERY HIGH @1080p which is garbage setting to me and that my opinion btw , and most these cards where getting crippled under 50 fps.Now with a WC Titan 1176 mhz I was able to do 2 X MSAA Ultra
at 52 fps. So is the 290x to much for 1080p Hell no if you like the best settings let alone you'll need crossfire to maybe hit 120hz . 1080P is still a contending resolution to deal with unless your running game's with consoles engine's

all the GPU power in the world is not going to get him 120 fps maintained with his CPU in most games

I don't see the 290X being a "platform bottleneck" at 1920 res. While some games (BF3) show the 780 ahead of the 290X @ 1920 and then swapping leads at 2560 and up, other games (Metro LL) show the 290X well ahead at all resolutions including 1920. The GCN architecture simply excels/scales with certain game engines.

As others have mentioned, I enjoy turning on as much eye candy and AA that I can while trying to maintain high FPS to take advantage of the 144Hz monitors I use. There's a freshly delivered 290X that I'll be installing in a FX 8350 system over the next few hours; we'll see how she performs :)

I would just get a to a 280 X.and a TV at 120 Hz is not going to allow you to really see more than 60 FPS anyway since its input will only be 60.280 X just makes more sense for you.

You would be wrong. There are quite a few "3D" enabled LCD TVs that can do 120hz in 2D..Go check out AVS forum since I know you are going to come back and deny I am right;)..

As far as "overkill" @ 1080P, for the insane performance you get $549, I would say go for it OP..If you are comfortable spending $549 on a GPU that rivals Nvidia's $1K GPU, then buy it and enjoy yourself. You can smile with glee as you slide those quality options all the way to the right, at ULTRA:D..

the odds of him picking one of those models is pretty small

Please explain your point.

The card is insanely fast at 1920x1200p when AA/instensive games are tested. No matter the resolution, or ROPS. You can make the card perform as well, with intensive game mods, and advanced AA levels SSAA + iq optimizations turned off in drivers and SMAA injectors.

So no, this card is not useless for 1080/1200p is great if your IQ junkie like me :)

Then your best bet is to get a 290 non X. The 290x is overkill for 1080p.

Hell even a 280x would fit your needs.

If price isnt an issue you can get a 770, but get the 4gb version.

Eitherway a 290/290x is overkill for 1080p IMO.

What a load of rubbish. The 290x would be a great card for 1080p @ 120fps/hz

hey even my dinky 660ti can play any game I have at 60fps on high settings or better. lol no need for medium even with it.

Just for chance sake show me fps 60fps or even ill say 50fps high settings with a screenshot proof

To make it even better i wanna see proof of this
