280x Crossfire?

I've been researching this and have found conflicting information, so time to take it to the forums. I've heard that if you set up 2 280x cards in Crossfire, they don't need to use the bridge. Is this true? Or do all the current Crossfire setups require the bridge?
 
The 280x is a 7970GHz and needs the bridge to use Xfire. The 290 series is bridgeless.
 
Ahhh gotcha. Thanks for the info.

Hmm okay, wonder if I should get a 280x or a 290 then. Seems like when I have 2 cards close enough to each other to have the bridge on there I run into heat issues. If I plug the cards in on the two ends of my motherboard I don't have heat issues, but the bridge isn't long enough to reach. Seems like the price difference between the 280x and the 290 is pretty high though, especially with all the mining.

They sell longer bridges so that's not an issue. Don't base your decision on that.
