I’ve got an old crossover 27” DVI monitor I’m trying to hook up to my new gaming build since the wife stole the 34” Ultrawide for her home office.... tried both bidirectional hdmi to dvi and DisplayPort to DVI and both get locked at 640x480 and will not allow the change to be forced to 1080p or any other resolution. Any suggestions before I give up on trying to use the monitor.

What is the model of the monitor?
Is 1080P the default resolution of the monitor, or is it higher like 1440P?
Are you restarting the computer after connecting the monitor? (DVI can be somewhat less friendly when hot-plugging compared to other connectors)
What adapters/cables have you tried exactly?
What videocard?
What operating system?

GotNoRice,I believe this is what he's talking about:

Is this one of the newer Crossovers with internal scalers? Otherwise, you're going to have to get this thing running at 1440p or nothing.

You could also try using HDMI to DVI passive converter, and settle for 30 hz at 1440p.

That’s the monitor! I’ve tried passive cables to no avail. Keeps either being blurry where you can’t read anything or stuck at 640x480. Would an active cable allow me to get to 1440p at 60hz, but at that point, wouldn’t it make sense to just put that $ towards a new tech monitor

Have you tried setting a custom resolution? You should be able to run at 1440p at 30 hz until you get around to replacing it (sucks for gaming, buit should be usable for desktop).

I would just buy new monitor - dual-link DVI adapters are flaky and expensive but modern name-brand monitors start at about the $400 mark for 1440p gaming IPS Freesync.

I assume you were also overclocking the monitor? if so, you could run into bandwidth issues on an active dual-link adapter.

Or if you just want 60 hz 1440p, there's always this 10-bit panel:
