Ok I know that the gaming performance on these cards arent the best but how do they do at high definition playback? I was thinking about getting one for my HTPC also are there any reviews that have HDMI with audio?

gaming performance is pretty bad but the HD decoding is top-notch. Haven't seen anything that really explores these cards in a complete htpc environment though. Give it some time, the htpc sites will come out with their evals soon.

A $79 video card with HDCP, HDMI and UVD (also can be passivly cooled) and will come in AGP eventually. This seems like a HTPC dream come true or atleast mine anyways. It not working under Vista 64 doesnt currently seem like a deal breaker to me.

Its good to hear one of AMD's promises fullfilled. I also like how some of them are low profile. Now the question is, can it do it better than Nvidia can?

Why not look at the review link to entries up.

H264, NV has lower CPU utiliization.
VC1, ATI has lower CPU utilization.

Overall they both do a reasonable job of cutting CPU utilization with high def.

Highly doubt. It is common knowledge in the HTPC crowd that PureVideo blows away AVIVO for picture quality.

It is a thread on a famous forum for HTPC crowd regarding Avivo and PureVideo.

Yeah, right. Nvidia always blows away ATi according to you

You know, that link you give doesn't really disprove what OM said nor does it prove him right either.

All it is is a discussion on what Avivo and Purevideo are; not "which is better." Hell, the one guy in there that actually does say that doesn't even know WTF he's talking about and the other guys call him on it.
What was on that site, besides the funny colors?
I'm still trying to figure out any sort of relevence that it might have.

Either way I'm thinking of picking up a 2400 Pro to play around and see if it's worth replacing my 8500GT sitting in my HTPC. From the looks of it it seems that HTPC usage is pretty much the only thing where ATI shines with their new generation of cards, thats just pretty damn sad. :(

I just hope that ATI has worked out the bugs from their DVI to HDTV issues that they're had in the past.

If you know what PureVideo is then you won't say that nVidia card has a better pic for HTPC. If you know how to setup your HTPC correctly, you can get a great pic from any card as long as you have enough processing power.

Clearly you have no idea what your talking about. Purevideo is considered the defacto standard when it comes to MPEG2 codecs; all others are compared to it.
If you know how to setup your HTPC correctly, you can get a great pic from any card as long as you have enough processing power.
Now I know you're not fucking serious; to make an ignorant statement like that.

All MPEG2 codecs are not made equally, some are better then others.

It is just a codec
Which governs the quality of the video as it's being decoded.

Let me guess, Purevideo is "teh suxor" simple cause you have to pay for it, right?

Thats like saying it doesn't matter what video player you are using cause "it's just a video player" which is what makes you ignorant. Load any DVD in properly configured MPC, WMP and Zoomplayer and you'll get a video that is slightly different across all three apps. You could even be using the exact same DVD codec; it doesn't matter cause all three handle the rendering of the video differently. The same goes for MPEG2 codecs.
Clearly you need to go to AVS forum...
LMAO Uh, no. If this is the crap that is being spewed around AVS Forum then I have no reason being there cause it's evident that AVS has devolved from a temple of media geekiness and knowledge to "noobs" who couldn't even properly configure their systems for DVD playback.

Clearly you have never used a codec that can be customized with post processing, if you have used such codec, you would know that you want hardware acceleration to gain more processing power. You don't need different player to get a slightly different video, you can use a same player and customize your codec to get a totally different video.

What are you talking about? The Purevideo codec does DXVA for both NV and ATI cards. Any modern MPEG2 codec does. Hell, Purevideo even does post processing when you have a supported video card. You're not making any sort of sense.

Okay, now I'm sure you have no idea what your talking about. Please, stop. We don't need any more examples of your ignorance.

This is what I'm talking about, you can even customize just half of the screen to campare it with the original picture. Clearly you have never used such a codec right? Btw the pic is not a HD-DVD but just a normal DVD upscaled to my native resolution.

Thats not because of the codec used, thats due to the video player being used.

BTW the picture quality there looks like shit. What codec and video player are you using?

It looks like shit because I just used print screen and a low quality jpeg. What I want to show is that you can customize your picture. There is no point for me to capture a high quality screen shot since we are not using the same display.

Believe what you want but please stop spreading FUD about nVidia's cards have a better picture quality for HTPC.

It's only FUD if it's not true. ;) You haven't even "proven" your assertion that NV cards are terrible for HTPC use. Look around to any HTPC site and they're been the standard for a while now.

ATI's current cards might change this though since it seems that HTPC use is their only worth.

Read my post again,

I never said that nVidia's card is terrible for HTPC, I said that you can get a great pic from any card if you know what you are doing and it is better to have more processing power, which you can get with a card that has a better hardware acceleration.

I dont know how this thread out of control, but thanks for the links to the reviews. Now I just need to know if the audio over HDMI is any good.

Thats usually what happens when someone brings some sort of bullshit in, I don't know what his beef was/is but he's totally wrong and I'm not terribly sure if he understands what exactly he's talking about. Either way:
Now I just need to know if the audio over HDMI is any good.
It's digital out just like if you were using SPDIF out. All it's doing is sending the audio data along with the video data through a single connection.

What matters most is if you're TV has "okay" or crappy speakers. Hopefully you have an HDMI capable receiver cause most TVs have either crappy or okay speakers. This is pretty much the only thing I don't like about HDMI.

I use Media Player classic, which can be configured with any post processor. A post processor is not the same as a codec. Post processing can only do so much, the codec is just as important. Purevideo + FFDSHOW is the defacto standard in the SD-upscaling world, and anyone who says otherwise is full of you-know-what.

Yeah right, some people think they know everything eventhough they just use the stock settings. It is just like saying 8800GTS gives a better image than 8800GTX after looking at two different systems because they don't know that AA is enabled on the 8800GTS system and on the 8800GTX it is disabled. They just don't know how to change the settings  Btw I've made a thread on AVS forum to know what HTPC community think about picture quality of either card. Hopefully we will know who is full of you-know-what.
