I am getting a 9600XT...I had a 9600Pro, sold it for a 9800Pro, trolled.... yadda yadda and im stuck on a GeForce2. I need an upgrade. Basically I can get a sealed visiontek 256MB 9600XT for $135, or a 128MB 9600XT used card for $125. I know in the past it has always been 256MB is not worth the extra money coz no games use it, but doom 3 is out now..so its different. Wuld it be wise to get the 256MB card, to run the game at higher settings, or is the card not good enough that it wont be able to run the game at levels that will require that much ram anyways?

the $10 more is worth it just to get a new card .. let alone 256MB ...

Yeah but the other one is the uber rare Sapphire Fireblade (532/650 instead of 500/600)...and its black :p ...otherwise I can get a regular Sapphire 9600XT for $110

Yeah, 256mb cards are actually worth it now. DoomIII ultra mode uses over 500mb of video card memory or so it says. Anyway, a 9600Xt is a good card for the money but it's not going to give you too impressive results in DOOMIII. The 9800 pro is better than the 9600xt and I bet you can get one off ebay for around whatever your budget is.

$150 max is my budget....good like finding a 9800Pro on ebay for that...

I heard its the PCI-E varient coming out in a few weeks, with the AGP version a bit after that....i cannot wait any longer....doom3 + lowest possable settings = 15fps.....thats just not workign for me...

In that case I'd say buy the 128mb 9600xt for $110 or spend the extra $30 for a 5900xt which is much faster than a 9600xt. $150 for a 9600xt 256mb is a waste

Good thing its only $135 then :D And for the price of that 5900XT, I could snag a 9800Pro, which would do conciderably better

256 meg isn't worth it on a 9600XT. I was playing Doom 3 fine with 128 megs and even now, I'm playing fine with 128 megs on my 6800.

Course, the card isn't enough power for me, so here I come GT or Ultra.

ok...I got another option to throw into the mix. A 9700(np) with a VGA Silencer that overclocks to pro speeds for $140...worth it? Should I go with t $110 9600XT instead?

again going into the $140 range imo not worth it for a 9700np, better off spending extra for the 5900xt or less for the 9600xt

what a 9600xt over a 9700 with a vga sil already installed. are you shorted out in the noggin?

the 9700 w/vga silencer is a great card if you can get it for around a 140-150$ thats a hella good deal and much better then the 9600,

or man that 6600 would really kick trash for you and in a year you could find a 2nd oem version cheap and run sli

Is it a coincidence ALL you ever recommend are nvidia's cards?

id deffinetly go with the 9700np, if it clocks to pro. 8pipelines vs. 4pipelines.... think about it. the 9700 will be a much better buy

Too bad that's your max budget. I could have given you a 9800 pro 256 for $200

Do not temp me like that....no fair :p

more importantly, I have to choose between the now $135 9700 or a fx5800 for $150. I am thinking the extra $15 is worth it since it doubles as a vaccume cleaner... it does a tad better than a 9700Pro in some games, and the cool factor of it, being so rare, its tempting

If its the FX 5800 Ultra jump on it, if its the FX5800 non-ultra be warned that it makes an annoying high pitched noise that may or may not bother you (the ultra doesnt make the noise). I'd still say if you are venturing in to $150 territory to just buy a 5900xt.

You like the 5900xt dont you....but thats $20 over my budget for a way overpriced card. I 5800U holds up with a 9700Pro, sometimes better sometimes worse, so really I need to decide if the extra $15 is with it just for the uber leet rareness of the card, and I dig the cooler. Plus, bing a true 5800U, i can OC it and get another step above the 9700Pro, which is just a 9700 with a VGA silencer and ramsinks that can get to a 9700Pro lever (higher on the core, just under on the mem)

I dunno man, my friend got BFG 5900XT OC for $160 on ebay.

For $165 I could always get a 9800Pro...which would certainly do alot better though, a 5900XT is completly ruled out, if i spend over $150, its on a 9800Pro

Ah if its a FX5800U no doubt go with that. Thats a great deal on a collectors item that works great in Doom3.

OK...hears the following offers I have...I have to choose between a 9800Pro for performance or 5800U for rareness...

9500np that mods to 9700Pro - $100
9600XT - $110
9600XT Fireblade (rare) - $125
9700 w/ VGA Silencer and Ramsinks - $135
FX 5800U - $150
9800Pro - $165 (another $10 for a VGA Silencer would probably be tacked on)
FX5900nu 256MB - $170...another option to concider...this card lags behind the 9800Pro in almost all the benches ive seen, but the extra ram might make doom3 happy

I know the 9800Pro is the fastest card of the bunch, but with is economically the best deal.....buying a budget card is so tough :p

Well, I bought an MSI 9800 Pro 128 Retail Box for $179. (Canadian) at NCIX.

It has the R360 core and is recognised as a 9800XT.
I currently I'm running flawlessly at 430 core/ 380 mem. I haven't tried higher yet, though I will.

Xt's run at 412/365 stock so I guess I'm doing ok.

Paying almost as much for a 256MB 9600xt is stupid...the 9600 will NEVER get you the speed of the 9800 I have. The MSI card while not a reference design, kicks ass ( in it's class of course).

Cheers

256mb on anything below a 6800 GT/X800pro is just a waste in my opinion. Nothing out right now really needs more than 128 to look and run beautifully. (yes, even Doom3) but putting 256mb on a low end card is just adding more to the cost.

I went with the 256MB 5900nu...flashes and OC's past stock 5950U speeds, and with 256MN ram....it runs same as a real 5950U...for $170 you cant beat that. A 9800Pro beats it in most games, but this card pulls ahead in doom 3 because of the ram, and tahts the game I am buying this for.....When I get it (today) I am going to burn my GF2...good riddance

gamve.com ->9800se 128 meg for 122, probably can OC to stock 9800pro and softmod is a possibility, but the ram is 3.3ns ram, I say it's still worth it to get to probably at least 350/300 speeds (4pipe, or 8) to rape a 9600xt if it's 8.
