250w be enough for 5750?

i3-550, 1 HD, 1 Wireless NIC, 1 fan + cpu fan

I am trying to get something a little better than a 5670 LP and there is a 5750 LP availible. I have a Dell 580s I am trying to upgrade for the wife and she has the U2311 so 1920x1080 is the native res.

I used http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine to see where it would be and it averaged 253w recommended, if I remove 4 dims and install 2x 2Gb dims it puts me at 246w recommended :p
 
if you are asking if a typical 250 watt psu is enough then no. a typical 250watt psu will only have about 12-14 amps available on the 12v line which is not enough to safely power a complete system with a 5750 under full load. also most 250 watt units are made with very cheap parts and cant even make their advertised wattage under realistic conditions even when new.

As cannondale06 pointed out, more than likely that 250W PSU has a very low +12V rail.

With that said, check how much amperage there is on the +12V rail for your PSU and report back just to make sure that we're not wrong.

Remember that it's not about the wattage only: It's also about the amperage.
 
I'm at work atm but if I recall correctly I believe it was either 14 or 17 amps. I am pretty sure the 5670 LP would be fine but I'm looking for the best I can get for her so /shrug :p

it is likely 14 as that is the most I have ever seen on cheap oem 250watt unit. remember though it is made with cheap parts and that its rating is not very realistic under real world conditions even brand new. if it is rated for 14 amps then I would consider that to be only around 11 or 12 at best. that is only about 144 watts at best and that pc with a 5750 could easily use that much. even best case scenario is that you will be at 90-95% just during a typical game.
 
As others have said, it depends greatly on the quality of the power supply in question. In my fiance's shuttle I've been running a q6600 G0 @3ghz, 4gb of ram and two raptors for 2 and a half years and a GT240 for about 8 months on a 250w psu. I would still never hook a 57xx to it, any card that requires an external pci-e plug is definitely pushing a 250w unit.

yeah your shuttle 250watt psu is an another league compared to a cheap oem model. really if you had his i3 cpu and 5750 it would probably consume less power than your overclocked Q6600 and gt240.

Its definitely possible it could use less, only reason I even overclocked that Q6600 was because the Shuttle's BIOS won't let me undervolt it so I figured I may as well make use of the headroom at stock volts. I kind of expected the psu to balk at the load but it has never even grumbled.

I'm assuming their are quality 250w units out their for purchase, its a pretty desirable power range for most HTPC builds where you want to hit that ~50% load sweet spot for efficiency.
 
I really hate Dell cases. They are super cramped and their PSUs are minimalistic and weak. That's why I swapped out the standard dell PSU in the family computer with a Seasonic X-560. Now it can handle a real video card... except that it has to be single slot because the case is too damn cramped!

The next logical setup for you , get a regular case and move everything into it or upgrade to a system you can build :cool:

Yeah it's quite unfortunate. SPCR has two shortlists of quality PSUs (scroll down), including ones under 380W. One of the models on the "Recommended" list might be just the perfect answer for you: Sparkle Power SPI250EP. Still available for sale :)

Tom's Hardware is good for questions about power use. Their article on power efficiency of 5000 Radeons is great for this. You can see here that their test system with a 5770 peaked at ~225 Watts playing Crysis. (Although the test system was undervolted.) The test system is here; it features the Phenom II X4 955 BE, which is obviously more power hungry than your i3. Also, the 5750 should be slightly lower on power than 5770.

So, overall, it sounds to me that it's quite possible with a quality PSU, even without undervolting, since your i3 is less power hungry than the 955 BE in those benchmarks.

FSP? Hmm, mixed bag here. On the one hand, they make ok PSUs. On the other hand, they also make crap PSUs.

Yeah, it meets the minimum of 13A needed for your PC + the HD 5750. But as cannondale pointed out: many of those 250W PSUs inside prebuilt PCs tend to not be able to provide their rated specs without dying or killing a PC part.

Really up to you if you want to take the risk.

I'd say, OP, you should go ahead and try it with the PSU already in the PC.

SPCR doesn't do proper PSU reviews. Especially the one you linked which is based on the age old PSU testing method of "we plugged it into a PC and it didn't blow up". Their latest PSU testing methodology have inconsistent/incorrect ripple measurements.

As such, I don't use SPCR as a credible source for PSU quality. Definitely a source for PSU noise levels but quality.

Anyway, this is why I think FSP is a mixed bag here: They have these crappy PSUs:

Yeah dude, under the circumstance I would just get the Seasonic 300w, and call it a day. It's only $40, and gives you the capability to run even a 5770 if you so desire (you may very well desire if you're playing on 1920x1080).
