hello. my friend has asked me to set up a motherboard/processor combo for him, because he is a computer buffoon when it comes to [h]ardware, and we have decided upon using an AMD AthlonXP 2500+ barton using either the KT600 Via chipset of nForce2 chipset for the motherboard. Any suggestions?

in mind are: Abit NF7-S
ASUS A7N8X-X

I would go with nf7-s or a7n8x deluxe or "E". (I'm waiting for retardedchicken to jump on this thread) but the a7n8x-x can't hit 200fsb (or at least the one i used) So thats a no no if he is planing to oc. I've personally had good luck with the asus board, and would really go with that. But if price is an issue, go with the nf7s.

Or I would look at the shuttle an35n http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...-150-045&catalog=22&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=1 $67 on newegg can't be beat! plus you still have all the goodies.

Go with the Asus a7n8x-e-Deluxe, it varies in price from 113-117 dollars on newegg.com and zipzoomfly.com. With some added voltage you can easily hit 200 FSB with this board.

Mine's sitting at 200 fsb stable right now. However, the lack of dual channel memory makes it a less than stellar choice.

My NF7-S is doing very well at 200MHz. I can push it farther but don't want to risk it on the stock cooling. 3200+ is a nice number, too. DFI makes a nice board also, I think it is the Infinity II or somesuch for about the same price.

DFI NFII Ultra Infinity is a great board. $95 at newegg, has great overclocking features and support with multiple bios updates (many official and betas). DFI reps at amdmb.com in the dfi forum as well.

Many users regulary attaining higher fsb speeds on the DFI than both the abit and asus with no mods required.

I would agree with TeckieB. I just built a system with a Shuttle AN35N-Ultra for a friend. It worked like a champ. It is a nice blue color and was only $67.99

It's a NForce2 Ultra board with:

Specifications:
Supported CPU: Socket A AMD Athlon XP/Athlon/Duron Processors
Chipset: nVIDIA nForce2 Ultra 400 + MCP
FSB: 200/266/333/400MHz
RAM: 3x DIMM for DDR400/333/266/200 Max 3GB
IDE: 2x UltraDMA 33/66/100/133 up to 4 Devices
Slots: 1x AGP 8X, 5x PCI
Ports: 2xPS2,1xLPT,2xCOM,1xLAN,6xUSB2.0(Rear 2),1xGAME,Audio Ports
Onboard Audio: Realtek ALC650 5.1 Channel Codec
Onboard LAN: Realtek 8201BL 10/100M
Form Factor: ATX

It has everything that you would need onboard and cheap to boot.
