Have to admit the Sony G520P I had for awhile didn't look any worse than my FW900 but I think a lot of the FW900's popularity is its 16:10 aspect ratio and the fact they seem to be pretty reliable in the long run (my G520P croaked after a few years, bought brand new).
 
same here. Some of my old trinitrons 4:3 21 inch had various problems after a few years.

I bought my fw900 in 2007, I have been using it for 2-8 hours (usually eight) hours during weekdays forever after, and the thing is still flawless.

I got cru utility from toastyx and installed a 1920x1200@90hz custom resolution (to avoid flicker; at 85hz I sometimes got eye strain after 8 hours of intense use) and many more depending on age of games etc.

I also own a 27 inch 2344x1400@120hz (overclockable) flatscreen, but the quality of the image and smoothness of movement in gaming and the black levels for movies/dark games was just SO much better on the old thing... I quickly ran back to my trusted gdm-fw900 and begged forgiveness.

Hope my monster keeps guarding my house for a looong time.
 
Children of Men - another dark-ish movie that really makes you appreciate a display with actual black levels instead of "gray levels" or, worse yet,
"purple/blackish-blue levels." Once again, make sure it's a good rip. Do right by your display, and it will do right by the source content.

The film seems awfully relevant to our times as well.
 
monitor I was supposed to get was supposedly 'dropped during packaging' which means someone else bought it

I am really really mad :mad: and sad :(
 
Not really related to the FW900, but since you are all my CRT brethren, I'll go ahead and share. Last night my wife and I performed a deep-optics cleaning on our rear-projection Hitachi. I also redid some of the mechanical focusing on it. And damn - it's a really good display. I'll share some pics of it with some bluray material soonish.

I loved my Sony 53HS10 53" rear-projection CRT. Used to do the electronic, mechanical focus, cleaning, and 50-point convergence on it and then marvel at the 1080i picture.

The sad part. . . when I finally went plasma, I couldn't even give it away on craigslist. A few guys in a scrounging scrap metal truck eventually picked it up.

Yeah, I'm convinced that most people who denounce 1080i as being shit have not seen it on a television that natively does it. Comparing Blu-Ray on my Hitachi versus my 1080p LCD monitor, the CRT rear pro was about as sharp in 1080i (except for on the very fringe edges, which is typical). Except for the edge sharpness and the overscan, the CRT - even in 1080i - demolished the 1080p monitor. Hands down.

The next modification that I will perform on this television is the "shimming" mod. That is - raise the lightbox up towards the mirror. This will shrink that picture and reduce overscan down to around 2% if done right. The problem with Hitachi rear projectors though is that there are NO digital geometry controls! I'll have to hit up the AVS thread dedicated to Hitachis to figure out what to do.

I have to admit that's a sad story indeed. :( For what it's worth, my big rear pro was given to me. I think it's probably one of the best large-screen displays I've ever owned.
 
Ugh. The DAC on my 980 SUCKS. My 7800GTX is clearer. Anything over about 275MHz is unusable and it starts blurring at 150MHz! 1280x960@60Hz is not usable, so a gunked up 1600x1200 @ 85 or 100 is what I am using, even though my monitor supports 2048x1536 at 85!
I can't wait for the new hdfury.
 
I am collecting old classic monitors. Just snag an IBM T221 DGP from japan. I have 2 HP P1230. Was thinking about adding an FW900 to my collection. Where's the best cheapest place to get one at a reasonable price? what's a reasonable price?

Any other good monitor I should also consider?

Hi fw900 users who like to keep using on AMD cards, I emailed a fellow who makes racdac for high end projectors and here is what I have to share.

This is a custom order(handmade as well) he show me that he does here(Pic below), HDMI to RGBHV converter, Im somewhat interested in myself but As I sent to him in the email 75 hertz(I am assuming that at lower resolutions will do higher, don't quote me) is to low for me. He did say he has a HDMI 2.0 product he was working to which he said out be about 6 to 8 months out (depending)

If you have any question you should email him, He is going to be emailing me shortly something of a spec sheet so I can share.

Isn't hdfury something to use for playstation and old crt televisions? Or are they designing the new one for crt monitor users in mind?

I looked at them before, but the hdfury could never handle high mhz signals, like 1920x1200@85hz..
 
The upcoming one should handle quite a bit more than the usual 400mhz ramdacs can push IIRC
 
Well mine hdmi to vga adapter can do 1600x1200@75hz out of the box, with tinkering in amd cru it can do max 225Mhz pixel clock with refresh of 96hz on my MB 2070sb.
It costs almost nothing and as for hdfury5 it will probably cost a fortune. Picture quality on that adapter is good, only geometry sucks but that is not a problem in gaming or movies. Works with ps4 too but 60hz eye burner mode only :/

So good news the price of that hdmi to RGBHV is $380, and good new the HDMI 2.0 verison he is working on will be roughly the same price.

yes it is, Im also waiting for the hdfury HOWEVER moome dacs(the one I liked have a 12bit or 14bit? colour depth) well the hdfury only has 10-bit depth before.

so hdfury doesnt have the best color, let hopethat changed with hdfury5
 
interesting. I imagine the bit depth of the HDMI signal coming out of the video card would be the limiting factor, but having a 12 or 14 bit DAC makes the adaptor more future proof :)
 
which brand is that? looks nice, how much of a difference does the bais lighting make? I was going to go the Phillips Hue route and have it sync with my movies and shit(That is when I move).
 
I am having an issue with my BNC cable not displaying the max resoulution on my fw900. 2304x1440. I can create custom resolutions in my NVIDIA control panel and achieve 1920x1200 @85hz. When i create custom resoultion of 2304x1440 it appears 4:3 instead of 16:10.

What does it say in the OSD when you click the joystick button? Make sure it's set properly, too: Dropbox - windas_sg_config.xlsx (Go to Mode 6)

Try pressing ASC also, but you shouldn't have to.

It is showing 1920x1200 @85hz in OSD. I did a Windas White point Balance a while back. Was there something i did or forgot to do to confirm the default resolution on the Monitor Hardware side?
 
Thanks aeliusg!!!! That document is pretty nifty for cumstom resolutions! I saved it. I was able to display my default res now.

It's a Hitachi. I think it's the smallest wide-screen rear pro that they made, weighing in at 46 inches diagonal.

Thanks! All rear pro CRT hdtv's have the potential to look really good. Just takes some work is all. :). Personally, I think they're a steal of a deal since most people are simply throwing them out these days. Ours was one such television. A church no longer wanted it and gave it to us.

I feel like the bias light had improved our viewing considerably. It helps alleviate the "bloom" effect of viewing bright scenes in the dark. It's a 6000K light so not exactly 6500K, which is what the TV is calibrated to. But it's not a big deal, as I'm not a production studio. :)

I was wrong their are some other Sony RPTV with IFB slots, RVP-4015Q is also one too.

its only 700 tv lines, but I think I would keep it in either 720p since I own two fw900( soon I will have my babies near me, soon). So if I can ever find one i'll be a happy camper, plus its 60"s.

Check to make sure it can actually do native 720p. Most cannot, and very few can. I believe the only rear pro CRT's that can do native 720p are a couple of late-model Panasonic televisions. Other than that, they only natively do 1080i and rescan 720p if the mode is supported at all. A shame, if you ask me. My Hitachi can do 1260 TV lines, so it would have done 720p just fine. Oh well...
 
Thats what the Moome card is for. also its max res is 1400x1200 I think. what it said on the spec sheet. Its not a consumer RPTV I think was one of the broadcast models With the RVP-6010Q and RVP-4015Q, because the only specs I see them with usally is with Any of the BVM/PVM spec sheets.
 
Remember that TV Lines are a measure of horizontal resolution, not vertical resolution.
So 700 TVL is quite far from resolving even 720p fully. (1280 TVL)

Yea I do, The only reason Im even remotely interested in using it in my light gun gaming setup, but I dont think this will happen to be honest, I've been looking for this RPTV for awhile now and never really had any luck. The point of the Tv is size not quality(well it is, but size is the major here) in this manner( I know weird). Since the highest Platform on this would be my Coinops Xbox original which would be hooked into it.



also the main selling point (for me if I could find one) would be I could later swap the moomecard into a Sony G90 (they pop up everywhere pretty cheap these days). if I ever wanted to get rid of the RPTV.

You know what else is rare to find locally? freaking dimondtrons especially the 22", no where to be found.

Looking at the specs in the manual, I see nothing about S-Video or DVI. All it says is analog direct drive, which leads me to believe it's just VGA. Now, some IBM monitors are equipped with DVI-A, but those inputs aren't anything special.
 
The one pic of the back I saw in a Google image search had a DVI input, it was low-res so I couldn't make out anything else.

If it did have S-video, would that mean it could actually scan at 15hz or would it digitally upscale like an HDTV?
 
Depends on the the monitor, honestly. I would guess it upscales. For whatever reason, there were very few VGA-capable monitors that did CGA (which is essentially 15 Khz).
