equally as good?

try ALOT better than that over-hyped, over-priced Apple monitor.

I picked one up for 600 dollars new, i am trying to see if i should go for it or cancel it.

I think the response time is 25ms which is to high for gaming...expect ghosting

Speaking as a person who has the 2405 and hasn't seen the Apple, I really think you'd need to see both of them and form your own conclusions. Response times can be radically overhyped - 12ms can be as bad or worse in a lot of cases. I've personally seen ghosting on my Dell in games, so don't trust people when they say that ghosting doesn't exist on it. Also the display tech can radically affect the color fidelity and viewing angles; the 2405 has remarkably low contrast ratios even as little as 10 degrees off center - simply put, things on the edges of the screen will always look different than things at the center of the screen. The 23" Cinema may or may not have similar characteristics.

I still love it though :D

However it is worth noting that the 2405 is believed to use a newer generation of panel than the Apple.

Apple says it is 16ms, you guys may know more
I think we have a lot people responding that only use pcs and never seen how beautiful mac displays are. Apple designs these displays for graphic designers so they have to get color calibration right. In other words the colors are vibrant and beautiful. The blacks are black not dark grey. Go to your compusa and look at them. They are beautiful. I have the 2005fpw and have used mac displays before. I`m in graphic design. These apple displays are beautiful and my dell cant touch it. Btw 16ms is good enough for gaming. You wont see ghosting.

My monitor is 25ms and has no ghosting.

that's not possible. Human eyes can see less than 60 frames/sec.

Thus 1/60 = approx. 16 ms.

25 ms is only 40 frame/sec., any human eyes can detect that.

This piece of tin can is over price, w/ features does not come close to the Dell 2405, in which the Dell gives you 1 inch more diagonal, w/ much better spec., thus performance at a lower price.

sell it to some mac idiot, not imlying that all are idiots btw, for near $1k or more and buy a 2405 then profit. Better monitor, imo, bigger and cheaper plus extra cash.

Using that logic, all LCDs ghost since their grey to grey response time is alot higher. While it's true that all LCDs do blur, it's entirely possible for a 25ms monitor to blur less than a 16ms one.

QFMFT
I currently have a 20in Apple Cinema Display and i can honestly say it was the best LCD quality i've seen in awhile, '0' dead pixels and the backlight is completely perfect from what i can see. Yes it was more than a dell display, but like i said i have no problems with it whatsoever and if i do, i walk to the apple store and they fix it, without having to ship a damn thing back.

I love the amazing level of experience people have with apple before they open their mouths.

Well I said "I think...". I have no bias either way against or for it...to judge otherwise is foolishness. I have seen Mac displays before and there fine. The first important number is response time to consider, then the other specs if your a gamer.

I swear to god we so many ignorant people here. The price for mac displays IS justifiable. Don`t get mad because you cant afford one. To the untrained eye you dont see a diffference. Thats why you settle for Dell but to people like me who have been trained for design and color its very important.

umm, I'm one of those people who bash the Apple LCD and I always will.

now, do I own one? no... would I own one? HELL NO!

my brother-in-law has the 23" HD Apple and while its "okay", it certainly isnt worth no $1800. especially when I compare it to my 2405FP for which I paid almost $1000 LESS than what he did.

so I will agree with the one poster above, the Apple is an over-priced tin can. I wouldnt go as far as saying that its a POS because it isnt. it just isnt worth nowhere near its huge pricetag when compared to the awesome 24" Dell.

i would say that 95% of the people who were tested between the two wouldnt know the difference. The price isnt that justifiable, even at a decent deal of $860 the 2405 is half the price of the ACD and is just overable better with maybe an exception of color. ive heard some reports of backlight leakage with the 23-30" ACD's as well so i still dont know if its worth it. My advice would be to sell it to someone like you and buy the 2405 then profit.

Talk about being ignorant... if display quality is THAT important to you then perhaps you should, instead of getting the ACD, get the Sony GDM-C520K. It's probably the best monitor out there.

Oh, btw, GDM-C520K is about $1700, about the same as your precious ACD 23".

I'm an "apple retard" so I'll buy this monitor from you if you are looking to resell it.

Oh no. I will never go back to crt. They`re freaking huge and mini heaters. Maybe for pre-press i would get one but not for the design stage.

Yeah, but if you use them, it can keep your room warm and save some money on heating oil, since crdue oil is hitting $70 this summer. :D

no, whats really funny is how you Apple people love to cry and moan EVERY SINGLE TIME that someone says anything negative about any Apple product.

this has ALWAYS been the situation every single time that I've met up with an Apple person and we get into these heated debates.

why is that? are you people so insecure that you have to defend your Apple computer stuff as if it were your own child?

sheez.....

First of all read the whole thread. Who were the ones that bashed the apple display without even knowledge of it? We are only here to set the facts straight.

So what? so the Apple display was bashed. big deal....

I for one am not going to cry if/when someone bashes my 24" Dell.

Jesus people, were only talking about a piece of computer hardware.

get a life for God's sakes...

you might be refering to me or even others but i didnt bash the apple, logically the dell has similar performance specs to the ACD, bigger and half the price with maybe slight less picture quality. With that in mind the dell is overall a better route to take, now if he gets it for that great price he should go for it, BUT i would sell it, buy a 2405 and spend the profit on some goodies

i live in socal so the last thing i need is heat, and also if crude hits $70 in the summer i dont think people will want heaters during the summer anyways. ;)

i have seen an apple 20"

i have seen a dell 20" (both regular and widescreen)

i liked the apple better

i bought the apple

now, ozziegn... i hope you dont take this personally but i see an awful lot of you saying bad things about apple owners and it's getting to be really annoying. how about you stay out of conversations that involve apple? you'll be doing everyone a favor.

i don't see someone talking about the dell 20 inchers and start flailing my arms around saying the apple is better blah blah blah

it's all UP TO YOU. don't like apple? great! like apple? great! who cares?

Okkk n00bs....

I purchased the 1st generation for $2000 and bought the Apple Care warranty for $100...
and I just got it replaced with the new 2nd gen display for free.

Guess what, I spent $1000 on each screen.

Also, the Dell 24" is great and all, BUT IT IS THE SAME RESOLUTION as my Apple screen. I see as much as you do. My pixels are SMALLER and more FINE...less grain. (Also has better color than the Dell)

So, 24" is great, $800 price for the Dell is also great. But you guys assume and are making a pretty good a$$ of yourselves.

BTW, the 2nd gen is 16ms, same as the Dell. The first gen was 25ms.

Better blacks
12 ms
higher contrast
Brighter
more inputs
1200$ cheaper ( u still spent 2000$ )
Bigger

Apart from that the Apple's an amazing product.

toekiller, if you go by contrast and brightness specs, then you have some learning to do

yea your right, we shouildnt look at contrast, brightness, PRICE, size and value. Lets look at this way, the ACD is sleek and sliver and the dell is ugly and black /applementality
Dont get me wrong, apple products are great but they are profiting so hugely and apple buyers just keep dishing out the dough. Theres no reason to go with the 23" acd when the 2405 is just a beautiful display that does everything the acd does with mostly better specs and half the price. Apple fans seem to be resting on their morals and not looking at the facts.

what exactly is the big deal here?

you dont think the apple is worth the money. thats GREAT!!!

its the same argument every time and it's very tiresome.

buy what you want, shutup about what other people buy.

where will you pick it up from? 600$ new thats impossible for an Apple 23" Cinema....   you are not talking abt the old Apple display are you!

Dell is bigger but the pix pitch is bigger as well .258 vs. .27 ....

ozziegn said:

Wrong! The Apple is artistically superior/prettier/better design/sleeker. Its basically S-IPS vs. PVA. S-IPS has better color delivery, faster RT while PVA has a little wider viewing angle...
S-IPS is regarded as a better solution/tech for an all-purpose panel as well as the only choice considering the gfx design....

the RT is 16ms and no ghosting at all .... Doom3 looks gorgeous on it .... you gotta to see it to believe it the colors are amazing ....

QFT.

the response time on MVA/PVA panels is gauged differently from S-IPS panels. You see a 12ms RT on a PVA/MVA panel , which is actually slower than a 16ms S-IPS panel. The Apple should be on par with the Dell if not any faster at all.

a newer generation? I dont think so! Dell uses 24" PVA panels from Samsung. Its an upgrade from their previous 24" panel which has 25ms RT. Considering Samsung was left behind the last round, this new panel only brings it up to date .... PVA by all means is an seven year old tech. samsung just keep fine tuning it as all other manufacturers do to thier
own panels.

agreed, but the Apple 23" has its own issues...serious issues....
