A recent survey says that 21% of people access the web while driving. 13% say it was to update their status from "YOLO" to "killed in a crash."

The percentage of drivers who access the web on their cell phones has jumped from 13% in 2009 to 21% in 2012. More than half of those who use the internet behind the wheel are updating their statuses on social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

Yea that's quite a bit of snooping to know what they're doing on the net exactly...

Guilty... of being a passager of vehicle with HSI in use. This behavior doesn't surprise. People will check facebook or email while at a stoplight. The issue is the fact access has been made so easy in so many locations. Even just a few years ago, it was unheard of to check your E mail or facebook on the phone. Why wait until you get home to check your E mail?

I use my phone for a GPS, so yeah, I use the internet while driving :D Occasionally when stopped at lights if I've missed a call/message while driving I'll just reply "I'm driving, talk later". If there's no lights I'll pull over.

How do they know exactly?

How do they know they are driving? They can't be passengers in the car?

Do people not read the article?

State Farm's annual distracted-driving survey was conducted in July of this year. Responses were collected from roughly 1,000 U.S. drivers 18 years of age and older, all of whom owned a cell phone and drove between one and 80 hours each week

which means the number is probably higher since who wants to admit even anonymously to an insurance company your driving distracted.

I think these types of surveys are a bit skewed, because clearly they're only getting people of the mentality who would answer a survey and I think it's those sort of people who would be more inclined to use their phones while driving :D

And the punishment should be the following: Having one finger cut off per incident

I think 80% of them commute in San Diego. I'm on a motorcycle and need to keep my wits about me to stay alive (even a Yugo can take me out), and I'm always stunned how many people are paying basically no attention to the outside world at all. They just tailgate with their peripheral vision while using their phones, putting on make-up, doing crosswords on the steering wheel, and my favorite- eating oatmeal. I actually see that weekly (well, it might be tasty wheat or grits).

And yet nobody ever takes any classes to learn actual driving skills…
