2013 High-End GPU War

The triangle test isn't a very useful test. We're long past the days where triangle rate is the most important factor for the GPU.

If you didn't notice, the triangle rate of the iPhone5 is awesome but in the real game engine tests (T-Rex and Egypt), the Adreno 320 dominates. The idea the Adreno 320 is "only good for movies" demonstrates an incredible lack of understanding here (GPUs haven't been lacking for movies for long time even for the mobile arena, not to mentioned if we're talking about video decoding, that's done by dedicated decoders).
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the triangle test actually tests how quick the gpu can generate triangles and polygons. And the T-Rex and Egypt test are pre-generated animations. I could very well be wrong about the tests.

P.S. With these numbers, I can actually believe Qualcomm when they say that the Snapdragon 800/Adren 330 will beat the Tegra 4... in the T-Rex and Egypt tests.
 
The T-Rex and Egypt tests are like the 3DMark Game tests. It's a game engine (albeit not a very good one) in demo mode. The only thing lacking in the demo tests is that the CPU isn't stressed as much as in a real game. It is definitely not running a pre-rendered video (even the Nexus One can easily playback native resolution video at 60FPS) since that wouldn't be a useful test.

The results are borne out by similar results in other benchmarks including Epic Citadel, 3DMark and Basemark Taiji.

On related news, NVidia is going to license keplar. I'm wondering if they are basically targeting Samsung's Exynos since Samsung is basically the only other relevent manufacturer of SoC's. But what's to stop Intel from licensing Keplar now other than stubbornness and pride? (Yes, nVidia will license to whoever can afford licensing fee)

Broadcom has an ARM license and might be looking to compete with Qualcomm. Device manufacturers like Huawei and LG are also looking to build their own SoC or already are.

But what's to stop Intel from licensing Keplar now other than stubbornness and pride?

In the long run it may be beneficial to develop the technology in house as opposed to be reliant on a third party.

One issue with Intel licensing Keplar would be that they do not have reciprocal leverage over Nvidia as they would with AMD and their licensing agreement.

In theory Intel could buy or merge with Nvidia (they have more than 2x cash on hand than Nvidia's market cap). There was actually rumored discussions between the two about a merger. Intel also has a sizable stake in Imagination Technologies.
 
Intel is already paying NVidia 1.5 Billion, starting in 2011 to license just about all their graphics patents.
 
Does that agreement not however stem from an IP disagreement, and subsequent lawsuits, between Nvidia and Intel as opposed to Intel approaching as an willing licensee?
 
Any T-Mobile phones confirmed to have a MSM8974 yet? Ugh, It's getting hard to wait for an upgrade... The HTC One looks soo awesome.

But, I want the Google experience... so, Will i have to wait for Motorola? Or the Google HTC One? The S600 is soo meh now...

Ah yes, the HTC T6 aka “One Max”. Rumered 5.9" screen... like... god damn, thats big. this is one of those, you have to touch it and experience it first before you buy phones...

Even Nvidia says Logan is out in 2014. I don't know why you think that has any meaning for something that far out.

Seriously, "haters gonna hate"? How about a real rebuttal. Intel will, in late-2013, simply compare the projected offerings using engineering data from PowerVR, themselves and Nvidia before making a more informed decision than those of us depending on hyped up press releases.
 
Im with chrono, nvidia over hypes to obscene levels and usually doesnt get close to bragged -about performance. Ill wait and see, PowerVR will have their new architecture out by then too, although its about damn time nvidia put kepler cores on mobile.

So we're assuming that PowerVR will somehow doubles its performance by the time Tegra 5 or whatever using this Kepler IP comes out...

Where I would agree with you guys is that these custom benchmarks applications are clearly written to give NVidia an advantage, just like NVidia did before. But knowing Kepler from the desktop and mobile (laptop) side on things, I don't doubt its superiority, but by how much from industry benchmarking standards, such as GLBench, is the question. And from everything I've seen such as the "core" count and statements from Anand himself, it should be at least 2 times better than the current PowerVR.

On another older topic of discussion:
After understanding more of what the T-Rex HD benchmark is, I figured out that the cpu and memory bandwidth has a lot to do with the scores; it's more of an indication of total compute power. And, obviously, the total package is what counts.

The best benchmark for "pure GPU" tests are the triangle throughput tests. From what I read from other experts, triangle throughput is a better indication of graphic "smoothness," whatever that means... Because isn't it the whole package that counts?

Only the game you play could tell you how the game performs for real... And like on desktops, some games prefer AMD and others prefer NVidia; so buy the graphics better for the games you play... I now know less than ever before...
 
I always saw the tegra4 as nvidias attempt to brute force their way to get some time, in this case for logans release. Although I dont think it was worth it. Gpu performance isnt everything and they could of worked on cpu performance.

Oh well, at least they caught up, by throwing massive power behind it.
