I need some brooding, ominous music to go along with that title. Wired takes a look at the concerns the scientific community has regarding the next predicted period of “intense solar activity,” which happens to be in 2012. Cue more ominous music.

Entitled "Severe Space Weather Events — Understanding Societal and Economic Impacts," it describes the consequences of solar flares unleashing waves of energy that could disrupt Earth's magnetic field, overwhelming high-voltage transformers with vast electrical currents and short-circuiting energy grids. Such a catastrophe would cost the United States "$1 trillion to $2 trillion in the first year," concluded the panel, and "full recovery could take four to 10 years."

Hasn't the apocalypse been predicted many times before and nothing has ever happened?

Are they even sure the events of 2012 will even happen?

Yes the Mayan calendar ends 2012, but it's completely metaphorical IMO. I don't buy any of this "zomg 2012 = end of the world!" nonsense.
 
My wife and I adopted a little Mayan girl last year... she's going to be a year old in less than a month.... she doesn't seem to be worried about anything besides wanting food and a clean diaper! ;)
 
P.S. When I was in Belize I asked a few Mayans about 2012, and none of them seem worried either.
 
Life on Earth has survived a few billion years of solar cycles. There's no use worrying about things you can't do anything about.

If the world does end in 2012 I hope its because of something awesome rather than the sun farting at us. :)

I do not believe it will the "apocalypse" as many interpret it, but more of a global re-awakening/understanding.

It is not something to be feared, instead should be looked forward too (although the times with be turmulent)
 
Listen to the late night radio program "Coast to Coast" for every possible end of the world 2012 conspiracy. Pretty entertaining, if nothing else.
 
Nah some hole isn't enough for doomsday, even when the Earth's poles reverse we will be ok. The real threat is the geodynamo and volcanic activity it causes. This probably has much more to do with global warming and cooling cycles then emission of warming gases from humans. Also, a supervolcano that is 1500 square miles (yellowstone) will release just a tiny bit more particulate into the air then we can through everyday life as it is now. Someone call Al Gore, he might want to to take this serially :p
 
theres like a 25% chance that 2012 would end up on a peak solar activity year just by chance... so yeah.. the end of the world :rolleyes:

We're actually in a solar minimum right now at the end of cycle 23 and no sign that cycle 24 is about to start. In fact, it is being discussed that we are in for an extended period of solar minimum that could last for many decades.

The type of minimum that is being discussed could rival this:

The prediction of a maximum in 2012 is based on the known 11 year cycle and presumes that the cycle continues as normal. As each month passes, that is looking less and less likely.

Super Al has no interest in the actual science. He's too busy raking in millions by whipping up hysteria about global warming as he jets around the world in his private Gulfstream.
 
So basically NASA is saying there is a good chance of a world wide EMP like effect? I'm not sure I'm following the best and worst case scenarios right because even worse case it wouldn't be an extintion level event. :confused:

exactly. there is a chance a solar flare (a very large one) could zap a huge portion of the world's electronics... but the chances of one that big hitting us that hard without us knowing before hand are small. we can detect these things well enough in advance to shield our electronics and turn out satellites away from the radiation. its a major concern for scientists and industry, but us commonfolk really wont ever have to worry.

i just hope we dont get hit by a gamma ray. they can be strong enough for instant vaporization over half the planet. with zero warning. like we could be tying one second and the ne
 
I don't know if its really gonna end in 2012 but Ive made a calender of games to beat throughout 2011 but thats you know ...just in case.
 
All 2012 Mayan calendar theories aside, no one at all seems to be taking the chance of the extreme solar activity seriously. There was one witnessed in the late 1800s that seriously would've messed today's infrastructure if it were to happen again and it seems that what happened then wasn't as strong as what could possibly happen in 2012. It's not the end of the world, just the end of modern civilization. I'm not one to believe the hokey hypes of the end of the world, but when some of the reports are backed by NASA, I'm a little more worried.
 
As long as I get my electrical engineering degree before 2012, I could care less.
 
I've said it before and I'll say it again. A natural disaster isn't going to wipe out the human race. It's going to either be nuclear weapons or biological weapons. Either way, it'll be us that does it.
 
I predict a total collapse of the economy and obama will be impeached. Nibiru will start appearing and we'll meet with AI. Maybe a giant earth quake from San Andreas fault. A super volcano in Yellowstone National Park will explode causing an ice age that would wipe out man kind. An asteroid might slam us also on 2012. A nuke from China will explode on US soil and the radiation will be picked up by the jet stream causing mass cancer and extinction from a ICBM. A lot of things can happen. Just gotta wait and see ;). Build an underground bunker while you can :).
 
I don't think anything will happen. If I were also to believe so, then theres not much I could even do about it..

I just know one thing that's for sure, life in 2013 will debunk all theories of epidemic and world destruction for me.. Until I see otherwise, I wont even blink an eye..

However, if I were to guess.. The way things are doing now with global corruption and power to corporations. I think if anything were to happen, it would be revolution. A think the only way to sheeple the people even more on government reliance would be some type of chemical warfare.. One thing comes to mind is population control.. Me personally, I think we need to revisit our roots on monetary policy..

Anyways if any of you are worried.. Just take things slow and stock up on potassium iodide ;)
 
People tend to ignore one fact. Humans WILL become extinct if we stay on Earth. There isn't the slightest doubt. Extinctionary events happen.

It is an undeniable fact that we will experience an ice age "soon". We're sitting on a precipice of a clockwork iceage. It's not something we can control or avoid. If we as a race don't master space or a supply of "unlimited" energy before it happens it is very likely we will lose 99%+ of the population not be able to develop these things during the 100,000 year ice age to follow.

It may be now, it may be 50 years, it may be 1,000 years. Either way, if the human race hasn't developed something to combat it or leave the planet it will 100 long cold millenniums for the human race.

There are plenty of other things that could wipe us out (many of them things the sun can do to us), but unlike Iceages, these things are random (in the sense that something like a solar ejection might just be in a different direction than Earth), whereas iceages are periodic and well recorded.
 
See folks , the Myans.... they were aliens. This would explain why nobody knows how they vanished. 2012 is probably when there coming back.
 
Let's just hope, that if the poles do go all whacko... That the magnetic flux is enough to wipe our civilization's hard drives.

That way, when aliens find all our technology, millions of years in the future, they won't see we were a race of perverts, beating off to Japanese throw-up porn.
